Toddler Thursday: Nice jeans, kid

Huggies Denim Diapers

Hi, folks, it's Sarah K.K., back with another installment of Toddler Thursday.

A couple of weeks ago, I chanced across a mention of Huggies new "jean" diapers, and my first thought was that they were the most absurd thing. And next: "Who would ever buy them?"

Well, the answer apparently was: my husband.

He saw them in the store, and thought they were goofy, and they were on sale, so he figured what the heck? If nothing else, we'd get a laugh out of them.

I did laugh, but mostly because the last person I expected to purchase them was him. Then I laughed harder because, seriously: Look at them. They are being marketed as cool, but it's just a blue design printed on the diaper, which is so dark blue, you can hardly make it out. (And honestly, when you do, it kinda looks like the kid is wearing mom jeans, which might actually qualify as irony.)

Cynthia Rowley and Pampers are getting in on the designer diapers thing, too. Those I would maybe consider if I were taking photos of a newborn and didn't want cartoon character diapers showing. But every day? No way!

Honestly, I find the whole thing a little mystifying. And I was a little embarrassed when, at a birthday party the other day, I discovered that the only diapers we had with us were the jeans ones. Everybody had a good laugh about them, but I couldn't believe we'd subjected the kid to them.

He couldn't believe it either.

(Photos by me, and kid, I'm really, really sorry)

Oh, and you have to check out the mortifying ad campaign:

I cannot stand the silly characters showing through, and I'd actually love a plain white diaper. (I know I could be going the cloth route...) I think the jeans are a welcome change.....to use once in a while when you don't have a diaper cover under a little dress (for girls). And the new Cynthia Rowley ones....I'd love to see them instead of pooh, mickey and elmo. Frankly I'm bummed I didn't think of it myself.

SKK: I think some of the organic brands have diapers without cartoons. But the jeans one also has a big ole logo on the back. The big problem is, of course, that they're all extra expensive, as if diapers weren't already a big expense.

Christina has already mentioned this, but I have to say CLOTH!!! They are waaaay trimmer than disposables (sorry, but look at poor kiddos saggy diaper in that 2nd picture). Even if you didn't cloth full time, it would be great for photo shoots! There is a lot of talk in the cloth diaper community about these diapers and how making them cute doesn't really make them better...

SKK: Oh yes, and that was a fresh diaper, too. We considered cloth, but our schedules are so crazy, I can't even keep on top of the laundry even when it's just our clothes. I love the idea, I love the look, but it's just not feasible for us right now. And I definitely didn't buy these for the look. I didn't even buy them!

From the dark ages here....why do we have to have cartoons on diapers/underwear anytime? Come on, how amused is the diaper crowd by this anyway? Aren't these designs really for the benefit of the purchasing public and what does that say about us?
