Baby names
What factors did you consider when naming your child?
My brother-in-law and his wife, who are expecting a boy in November, are experimenting with different names for their first child. As far as I could tell, they are leaning toward unique monikers. We have voted on our favorites from their picks, and they have narrowed the group to three.
When E. and I considered names for baby J., we came to an agreement rather quickly. We never considered the Jr. option. We both liked classic boy names, and we narrowed them down based on how well it sounded with E.'s uncommon last name.
Picking a name was probably the easiest decision we've made together.
The Social Security Administration allows you to search popular baby names by state and year. In Maryland, the top three boy names are Michael, Jayden and Joshua. For girls, they are Madison, Olivia and Ava.
Do you have any family tradition in picking names? Did you seek out advice from friends and relatives? Did you create your own or combine different names?

We had a hard time naming both children. We found out the genders of both in part to eliminate 50% of the possibilities! Both of us had common names growing up, therefore anything in the current top 20 was out of the question. We wanted names that were easy to pronounce, matched our last name and did not go the Jr, III, etc., route either. We aren't creative enough to make up names either.

For us, it had to go with a Verb of a last name. In addition it had to be something that rolls off the tongue. The last thing we want is to get tongue tied while yelling there name.

I was shy as a kid and hated having to speak up to correct people when they invariably butchered my unusual name. But as an adult, I love having a unique name. When it came to choosing baby names, I wanted names that weren't difficult to say or spell. And my son has the same first name as my husband, FIL and grandfather in law, but a different middle name. Many people assume that he is a junior because the first name is the same. My husband is a III and other than some mixed up mail, it's never been an issue.
I'd also caution against relying TOO heavily on the baby name lists. One of the names we considered for my daughter was virtually unheard of at the time, but has been rising in popularity for the past few.

Our first got a family name (maiden name of a grandmother) but we are struggling with this second pregnancy because we had a cool boy and girl family name again, but turns out we have twins. Best of all possible worlds - when we find out (and we will find out...the twins part was enough of a surprise), we'll have one of each, but we are after healthy babies, so if we get two of either gender, we'll have to start thinking of another family names. It doesn't seem right to have two kids with family names and the last without?

My husband and I both like traditional names so really it was easy. We have friends who took all 9 months to agree. I think it's a huge responsibility to give your child a name. Research shows given a name that is hard to pronounce or spell has prohibited people from getting job interviews. Sad but true. Best of luck to your brother in law and I hope they can decide before November.

We didn't make a final decision about names until after they were born and we could see their faces. (No, he doesn't look like a "Whitney.") This really bothered people I work with and they started suggesting names during my last few months. I finally stopped this by telling them we'd decided on "Tancred," and the baby would be called "Tank" for short. (Needless to say, we chose another name.)
Good luck, Michelle!
