Poll: The boy with unmatched shoes

Today's Monday Consult will be a crowdsourced answer to one of those situations you never envision facing when you first have a baby.

Namely: Is it wrong to let your child wear mismatched shoes to school? As in, the left sneaker is blue and black; and the right sneaker has a Transformers theme.

My first-grader is certainly big enough to put on his own shoes, and lately has become fond of wearing them this way. One day, I didn't even notice until he'd gotten home.

The more I try to dissuade him, the more he wants to do it. So I'm wondering:

My brother, now 27, has been wearing mismatched shoes for about 10 years, to everything that does not require a suit and tie. One black shoe, one white shoe. His stated purpose is to see who's observant, but I think what actually happens is that people notice but discreetly ignore his "error".

This too shall pass. Choose your battles carefully...if you "win" the battle over shoes now, you may lose the war over important issues like drugs and sex later on.

I would just make sure that the soles are the same thickness to make sure it isn't affecting his gait. I'd also give the teacher a heads up so you're on the same page about it.
