Sesame Street's 40th anniversary

Sesame Street is gearing up for its 40th anniversary season in a big way. Not only is Big Bird featured on the Google Doodle today, but the show is saying it will be "updated" for the anniversary season, which starts Nov. 10.
The new season will reportedly feature lots of celebrities, including First Lady Michelle Obama.
It's funny -- as much as kids love Sesame Street, I think they also reject it pretty quickly as they reach the age of, say, 5.
Mine aren't even willing to be nostalgic about it. In fact, to tease them every once in a while, I talk in Elmo's voice and ask them to pleeeeeze come back. They have a great time running away from "Elmo" and up to their Pokemon cards and R.L. Stine books.

As a older child 6-18 I also rejected Sesame Street. But now I reminisce about the skits and characters. I even have thought about getting the first couple of seasons on DVD so I can share it with my future children.

As a child I LOVED Big Bird, he was my favorite and now that I'm an adult I still like him. Although I never get the chance to tune in to any sesame street episodes, I really miss my big bird, he was and still is THE BEST!

I have enjoyed Sesame Street ever since
my young daughter and I first watched it when she was pre-kindergarten. It has that very essence of good learning without being rote. I have enjoyed the timely humor of the clever characters. I happen to watch it the other day and I laughed out loud at the humor it displayed. It has been a great assest to television viewers both children and adults.

It's been an incredible experience watching the kids grow up on Sesame street. The adult characters got older, but in their eyes, they look the same as they did 40 years ago!!

I ADORE SESAME STREET!!! I grew up in the late 70's/early 80's. I love talking with friends about the old bits. Walk up to ANYONE around 30yrs old and see what happens when you say "A loaf of bread, a stick of butter, and a container of milk". That one with "One, two, three, f-o-u-r, f-i-v-e, six, seven, eight, n-i-n-e, t-e-n.....eleven, twelve!" Classic Sesame bits are close to EVERYONE's heart!! Thrilled to see classic/clean television make it this long, we need it!

As a first generation Sesame Street fan, I was four years old when the it debuted.
It WAS a GREAT show.
Today, it seems to have devolved into variety / entertainment show with little educational value.

What's all this about rejecting Sesame St. after you turn five? My siblings and I all LOVE Sesame St. It is not only a learning tool for little kids but when you 'grow up' it can be quite halarious and fun. Mind you, I could have done without the new characters like Abby Cadabby and- what's the name of the one who has a little lamb and teaches the kids Spanish, he does the "The Word on the Street" bit? Anyway, all the same I still watch it whenever I can and, I am in college.

Sesame Street is the only children's show that I enjoyed watching along with my children. Great entertainment, as well as a good way to convey positive values.
Big Bird is definitely lovable, isn't she? According to the Sun, the occupant of that huge canary costume is a very talented woman who moves around using a small TV screen inside. So he is a she.
And please, don't ask me "Burt, how's Ernie?".

my 20 month old daughter is truly in love with Elmo. we actually don't watch the show much but she loves elmo books, stuffed animals, toys, etc. i have thought about the day she rejects elmo and her 'baby' toys and it makes me sad to think about! sesame street products offer a good combination of education and entertainment- happy birthday sesame street!

I was in my first apartment when I discovered Sesame Street while looking for Saturday Morning Cartoons to watch over my Sugar Corn Pops. (When Sesame Street first aired on NY Public Television, it was on Channel 13, since that was as high at TV channel numbers went.) It aired every weekday morning and then - all 5 hours worth - on Saturday mornings.
Big Bird and I raised my kids. The Count taught them numbers. I cried when Mr. Hooper died.
The GrandBoys are leaning more toward The Electric Company these days, but they'll still watch Sesame Street.

Ahhh the memories! Along with Williamson talking about a loaf of bread and a stick of butter....I"ll never forget, "Who is it?" "It's the plumber, I've come to fix the sink". One of my favorites! I'm also a 1st generation watcher as I am exactly one year younger (almost to the day), than Sesame Street. SS taught us so much; not only about letters and numbers, but about accepting those who are different from us. Whether black, white, brown, red, pink, purple or orange, fuzzy or smooth, deaf or hearing, old, young, speak English or another language, adopted or living in a trash can, grumpy or happy... we are all the same on the inside. So many people these days could stand to learn a thing or two from the show!

I am also a first generation Sesame St. watcher. I was four years old when the show debuted. I loved watching Bid Bird, Bert & Ernie, Elomo and Oscar. And who could not forget Suffalupagus. Happy Birthday Sesame St!

Sesame Street is a great T.V. show!! We all grew up with it together. Happy birthday Sesame Street and may you pass on to many other generations!

I really hated how they changed "Cookie Monster" to "Veggie Monster" I mean, can the show get worse? But I loved the show untill the age 9 *The show did wonders for me!* and I still love it at age 25..

i would buy Sesame Street DVD's for my kids if there was such a thing

Greg, they do have Sesame Street DVD's, but there's some controversy surrounding their appropriateness for kids these days. In my opinion, everyone needs to lighten up. Sesame Street is timeless. http://www.newsy.com/videos/sesame_street_turns_40

I think older children rejecting Sesame Street is just a healthy sign of how immensely important it is for the child during their formative ages. To reject it is simply to say "I'm a big girl/boy now". But I'm sure those same kids will be nostalgic about it as adults, just as we are.

I loved watching Sesame Street as a child. I have been watching it over the years because I have be taking care of children my whole life. Now as a parent I was so excited to share this wonderful show with my daughter, she is 17 months old. But the new season, I am so very disappointed with it. It's just not the same. They are not using the puppets as much anymore it seems. I do not like Abby's Flying Fairy School at all. And Murray is being used kind of like a news reporter to update you on what's coming up next. He seems to be a filler for time. I miss the older shows. We still watch it every day, but I'm not excited about it anymore. And yes I am going to order the DVD's of the first 2 season's so she can see the real true Sesame Street.
