Why is it that young women have to become slutty to become "stars"? I have always thought that Madonna, Brittney, Beyonce, etc. used sex to cover the fact that they thought their talent was not enough. I guess Miley feels the same.

I thought for the first time we might see a young girl break the immoral barrier that so exist in this World . To have a role model that our Girls could finally look up to for the sake of good Christien values. But I was wrong. I am so DISSAPOINTED for my Daughter.

Ive always liked miley cyrus as miley cyrus (not hannah montana) so i was pretty excited when i heard she was gonna perform on the teen choice awards. But when i saw her performance, i was surprised. That performance went too far. Of couse, im still gonna be a fan because she has a great voice...i just dont like the example she puts to little girls. Older girls like me know not to do that because our dads would kill us. But my 5 and 6 year old cousins wouldnt have a clue. Miley, do us all a favor and clean up a little bit.

And she claims to be a devout Christian? The goody-two-shoes image she's attempting to portray just goes to show what a hypocrite she is. To all the people who say "there are 16 year olds out there doing worse things than what she's doing and no one's complaining", well, you've been looking at the wrong places because it's a really sad day when it's okay for teenagers to pole dance. What's next? Stripping? She's pretty close to it, I'm sure.

She can do what the hell she wants, the only reason people are making such a big deal out of it is because she's famous, i know loads of people her age who act much worse, it's not her fault people see her as a role model, she didn't ask little girls to follow in her footsteps, so she can act like that if she wants. I can't comment on the dance because I did not see it. However, she is 16 years old and I would hope she does not choreograph her own dances. Either way Miley should have her parents approval before performing any dance or song. She is too young to have that creative freedom and has shown that in the past with pictures. Not that I feel it was in the wrong, but for her age, she needs better advisers who look after her well being and not the money side of it. Miley is living in an adult world and they are treating her as such. Allowing her to date a guy who is 4 or 5 years her Sr. at 16 is a perfect example. I'm worried about her and pray she does not turn into a Lindsay Lohan. She is much better than that.

What is wrong with that dance? I read a newspaper article before seeing this video and I thought that she was doing something raunchy on the poll.

I watch this and all she's doing is standing and holding a poll? One dip down - nothing xxx about it. Are you all serious? People do poll dancing as exercise and y'all are upset that she was essentially holding a poll? Her outfit is more raunchy than anything she was dancing on and honestly - she's a performer - she's not educating our children. Don't blame her if one our daughters wants to wear booty shorts. Her job description isn't "mom".

The only thing i find a problem is maybe her shorts but that pole i think has been taken out of context and i think the pictures only show what 30 seconds of the whole peformance but i agree that miley shouldnt do this stuff because it is giving people a chance to talk

Okay, I really do admire Miley and I wouldn't approve of any "pole dancing". Or anything inappropriate. Quite honestly, I thought some of the dance moves were worse that her on an ice cream cart holding onto the "umbrella pole". She only did one "move" and to me it seemed like a way to get down to see the audience. The rest of the time she was on it she was being pushed and she was just holding onto the pole. I really didn't think much of it. I was more appalled by the dancing and some of the background dancers attire than the ice cream cart! I really think she did great. Trust me. I wouldn't stand for anything inappropriate. I have worked with Disney before and they absolutely won't take it. With all the scandals of what has happened in the past they haven't let anything get blown off. They always took things into careful consideration. And things like the Vanessa Anne Hudgens scanda, they had to talk to her, they had to make sure she knew what the consequences were before she was able to do the second and third film. Obviously, she hasn't quite learned her lesson with what has gone on this week. I do think that she should think before she does anything dumb again. I hope and pray that we can all get back the little girl that we all love from High School Musical! Going back to Miley, she really has grown up a lot. She knows what she is doing and she knows what she has been taught. She also has learned from the past and she wouldn't let anything happen again. She is right. Whenever something goes on that is little and miniscule, people get down on her. It is so hard on her too. I really have faith in her that she could do great things and set great examples in the future. When you are saying things like "Im disappointed in Miley" and "She is just another one of those Britney Spears!" you have to look at what she has done in the past and what people think of her because of that. Again, what she said about the paparazzi getting down on her and making you think something terrible has gone on, really if it was somebody else, even just another Disney star, would you be getting down on her as much? Yes she is a big celebrity. Yes maybe she did do some low things in the past. It was a surprising performance, but I think we are making it a bigger than it was.

I didn't see the original performance, so when I read "dancing with a pole" and then clicked to watch, I was expecting something raunchy. My internet keeps cutting out, so I only watched about halfway through, but all I saw was her standing on an icecream cart while holding a pole and being pushed. Like a previous commenter, I was more dusturbed by the short shorts and the dancing of the background singers.

first of all, she is not performing as Hannah Montana anymore, so little girls should not be watching her. i have an 8 year old myself, and she knows the diff. between HANNAH and MILEY. it was not a pole dance-people are blowing it way out of proportion. their are other singers that little girls can watch. the TEEN CHOICE awards are for teens, not kids. she isnt doing anything worse than madonna, britney, or christina has ever done. she isnt a little kid anymore. if you dont like it, change the channel!

I was shocked not only by her dancing but with her choice of clothing as well. My daughter looked at me and said mommy you can see Miley’s bra. I was thrilled she didn’t see Miley’s nose ring. When I left the room I turned the TV off not knowing if there would be something else come up that I wouldn’t want my daughter seeing. I think the teen stars need to remember what age groups they are suppose to be entertaining.

Okay, seriously, what she did wasn't that bad! She bent down once and then used the pole for stability during the rest of the time she was on the ice cream cart as it moved. There was nothing provocative about what she did and classifying it as a pole dance is a gross exaggeration of what it actually was. If you think what she did was a pole dance then you've obviously never seen a burlesque show or even been to a strip club. There was nothing inappropriate about what she did.

Didn't Britney perform at the Teen Choice awards, too? I didn't watch it, but I have a feeling that that was probably way worse for the "young girl psyche" than Miley awkwardly standing next to a pole. In fact, I just think that the choreographer (if you could call the person who directed Miley's movements that) couldn't think of an any more reasonable way to get her up on a platform than to make it an ice cream cart and have her hold onto a poll.

Look, her pants are too short and her bra is visible-- but I've seen 13 year olds running around in bikini tops and miniskirts. In a grocery store. I would consider that skanky myself. But if they want to run around like that, they'll hopefully learn their lesson. In the meanwhile, parents should remind their girls that showing all their goodies just makes them seem cheap, and that's not gonna fly when they're in their 20s/30s looking for a career or a "real" relationship. Just don't keep proof on facebook or something.

Second, as she is moving on the cart she just can't be standing there doing nothing, and there's not much to do on a pole to be exciting. The people who say she didn't ask to be a role model to little girls- I disagree. She decided to be a role model for elementary age girls when she decided to start her career on the disney channel. It's like a slap in the face to the parents who spent their money on tickets and DVD's in support of a wholesome show and her career.

I do agree that the "pole dance" was blown out of proportion, however, knowing the lewd association we all have with poles, she should've known better then to put one in her performance. Lets use common sense here.

She didn't act slutty. She acted like a teenager, which means a sexually mature grown-up who is trying to assert herself as a person. Nothing seemed exploitative here. She seemed very much in control. The "pole dance" on the ice cream truck - maybe this has some nefarious meaning to some, maybe there's a metaphor there, but she is fully clothed, she is maybe lightly fantasizing, but that's it. Hardly the key to the act, which is about coming from one place and having to work in Hollywood without getting too nervous or shy. It's an anthem to self-confidence (although she gets there by saying - "Look it's all the USA" (even Hollywood). I'm glad I tuned in. I am sick of all this second-hand gossip against entertainment acts which are actually quite tame.

I watched it and I am not getting it. OK, She was holding a umbrella pole without the umbrella on a ice cream cart. They were moving her around. She was holding on and as she was singing she did a partial squat a few times but nothing erotic or exotic. Did this excite all you people and that is why you are mad? What I saw was a little girl singing and dancing and having fun. Shorts were short but not reveling. Her costume was not slutty. Am I missing something?

Okay, I'm a big Miley fan and it really sucks to see that people are taking this performance the wrong way. For all the people who believe that her performance on Teen Choice was stripper-like, you're all putting too much thought into it. First of all, the pole was on there for support because who can stand on top of a moving object while wearing heels without the possibility of falling? Miley isn't going to be the Disney girl forever. For the parents who are all looking at this and thinking that it's wrong of her, really think about it. Miley is reaching the age where she's moving onto bigger things in her career. Just like other Disney stars like Ashley Tisdale, Miley is expanding her career away from Disney. The problem is the image of someone under 21 on a freakin pole is somehow becoming okay. There is no way she should be on a poll on a show like the Teen Choice Awards. That said we know the accepted norm behavior is horrible so we must fight the good fight with our own kids.

I didn't see anything wrong with Miley's dance. I think she did a great job. She's growing up and wants to do what she loves. Young celebrities have to grow up fast and Miley is doing just that. All of you who say she is a bad role model don't realize that your kids probably love Miley as Hannah Montanna. Hannah is a great role model for kids, but Miley wants to be herself. Just like the show Hannah and Miley have 2 way different personalities. Let Miley be herself when she's not being Hannah and stop saying she's a bad role model for your kids.

I think that the pole was really there so that she wouldn't fall off. I mean it's an ICE CREAM cart, there's supposed to be an umbrella on top. Noo i didnt find this wrong and unapropriate, the pole was not a lap dancing pole it was the pole of an ice cream truck umberella and she was holding in so she didnt fall off of the cart. I think it was a great dance move you could say and shes a great singer and performer.

Wow, I CANNOT believe there so much controversy over Miley holding a pole to keep from falling off and having a freak accent. Sure, she swayed/moved to the music--so? What do you expect her to do? It wasn't too too risque, but consider that even though SHE is 16 HER AUDIENCE is filled with tweens. Hotpants, dipping low, and holding onto a pole is something entirely different to the 10 year olds that look up to her. Her agents, creative advisors and parents should take this into consideration.

I don't think that when they choreographed the dance they intended the pole to be that big of a deal, but she should have been more aware of what people would think when they saw her go to the floor holding the pole. it's just more publicity for Miley and her father, and now they just have to deal with the effects of her being too racy for the children that she's still a role model too.

I HOPE that the "pole" was just a poor judgement/oversight (though one would think her handlers or parents would have noticed it). Well. After hearing about her performance after practice, i had a description of extreme slutty-ness (excuse my spelling) after watching the performance above however. I see nothing really wrong with it. yes the pole dancing was not pole dacing if she was she would be humping it and spreading her legs all over the place. she just did a small squat to go down to her dancers head levels and choreographed to the tone's of the lyrics of her song. If u didn't notice the lyric she sang was a deeper part so the choreograph might of made her move down as well. If she did not have the pole she would have nothing to hold on to as the ice cream doly moved and would of had an increased chance of falling on stage and ruining everything. the pole could of been replaced perhaps to one of those stations they have on the Rose parade floats but that would obscure the audiences vies a bit and hindered her movement to the choreography. As for her Outfit. She could of been a bit more conservative such as having a back to it to hide her bra bit more, not just draping over her front leaving the side and back open for all the world to see. Overall from my viewing of this video she was pretty conservative on the choreography, i do not see why everyone is flaming and hating her for such a performance other than a few mistakes on choosing a shirt with a better backing i mean the shirt was nice it just needed a backing. and the pole, i think people take as pole dacing. GET YOUR HEADS OUT OF THE GUTTER PEOPLE!!! she did one squat with knees mostly closed i suspect due to her shorts. AND ITS SHORTS!!! Overall her actions and performance at the Teen Choice Awards in my opinion did have a few bad choices in prop usage and Shirt choosing but those could be fixed. the pole was for her own safety so she wouldn't fall off and break something, and the shirt could of have ad a backing to it and less revealing on the sides.

and whats so wrong with short shorts? i was at the park today and kids who were barely 10 were wearing shorts that high.....its the fashion now, as were extremely baggy pants a couple of years back, and short short gym shorts for guys a couple of decades back

i didn't read all these comments thoroughly but i agree with some people, I can see both side's of the arguement, however, I know some parents are freaking out because she danced round a pole, I'm a Miley fan and I'm going to stick up for her because I know mostly what she goes through and what role models she has. I'm 16, just 1 week younger than Miley and my mother would love it if I acted like she did, I've done far worse, I smoke, I drink(almost 3 times a week), I have done my fair share of drugs, i kiss boys (some of them I dont even know) and before you ask could this get any worse, it can, I have danced round a pole on more than one occasion. The only reason Miley's situation is being blown out of proportion is because it was on TV. She wasn't pole dancing and her outfit wasn't slutty, it didn't cover every part of her body but what do u expect, she's becoming a woman and flaunting her curves, loving her body, is that so wrong? She gets so much critisism in her life, a lot of people call her fat, tell her shes ugly, what do you want her to do? she's raising her self confidence, she probably knew it would cause chaos and maybe didn't want to do that routine but the show made her, no one knows. But look at the role models Miley has, Britney, Lady Gaga(who dresses like a slut and rubs herself up against barely dressed men but no one says anything, I thought she was a role model for kids too...)then there's Paris Hilton, I believe she's out almost every nite getting drunk and maybe even pole dancing in a club or dancing on tables, then don't even get me started on the sex tape. And also Lindsay Lohan(I will not even go into that). So how do you blame Miley for being a bad role model when you know who her role models were, Miley's not going to go down that road, because she's to good to fall into that trap, she knows how lucky she is and she knows how much her fans love her and she's just trying to be a normal girl. I mean, why over react to a bit of her bra showing, everyone wears a bra, young girls will find out in later life and it won't be such a big deal then and young boys, well, more than likely they will ahve seen a bra before they are 15, so why is everyone making a big deal just because she's Miley. I liked Miley when she first came out. I thought she was going to be a good role model for young girls. Myself being older I know its not all about having sexy dance moves or dressing in a sexy manner but younger girls out there are getting thrown all these images and examples that ur suppossed to do that and i find it disturbing. As for the pole…come on people, the pole was so she didn’t fall & bust her behind on the ice cream cart ride in the big dance routine ( this was no stripper pole but if it will get more press fine it‘s a stripper poll says the publicists) .
