The Lego lunch meeting

Our family got back last night from a holiday weekend road trip, and today we're easing back into the weekday routine. My son was happy to go back to camp, but for a surprising reason.
"We might have our Lego lunch meeting," he said.
Silly me, I asked what happens at the Lego lunch meeting. It sounded very serious.
"We have lunch and we talk about Legos," he said.
How do you know if you're going to have a Lego lunch meeting, I asked?
"My friend tells me if we're going to have one," my son replied.
I told him that I hoped it was productive. He nodded solemnly.

Of course, we smile and wink at the thought of a "Lego Lunch meeting." Isn't that quaint? How sweet...how adorable. Then again, perhaps there's something more here. I'm sure at one time kids gathered to share juiceboxes and have a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle meeting. Silly fun, eh? Yeah...silly fun that turned into a multi-million dollar industry. Who knows...what gets discussed at a "Legos lunch meeting" might have ramifications on the future of construction. Think about it. You build something with Legos, it holds together pretty well. Might the Lego concept apply to real-world construction? Modular pieces of brick and stone that fit naturally together without mortar? What begins as fantasy, the play of children, can become the real life world of tomorrow. Just ask H.G. Wells. Or Jules Verne. Okay, maybe not those guys, they're dead, so maybe Stephen Hawking. You get the idea. I'd imagine your son would be nodding in solemn agreement...

That's pretty much how project meetings go around here. I find out about them because one of my friends tells me he/she heard there was going to be a project status meeting.

My 8-year-old has been taking his bin of Lego's to the pool every day. All the other boys just crowd around and build whenever they aren't swimming. It's amazing how they all get along and their total intensity!

There was a time when our family room was known as "the Lego room." I knew my little boy was growing up when he decided to give all his beloved Legos to his younger brother. They grew up to be serious geeks. One friend who was never into Legos grew up to make pizza. This is a great plaything--really encourages creativity as well as logical thinking.
