The Stadium Place playground rises again

Good news to report on the Stadium Place playground front.

You may recall my post a month or so ago about the effort to rebuild this Waverly playground, which burned to the ground last fall after the community worked so hard to put it up in the first place. There was a call for volunteers to restore the castle-style playground to its former glory, with a big work session that culminated last weekend.

How did it go? Marisa Canino, who helps publicize the effort, says that thanks to all the volunteers, the new playground is "about 99% complete, which is exactly where we wanted to be.  There is a short list of items that needs to be completed which we'll work on over the coming few days." If all goes well, the playground should be able to open shortly after Memorial Day, though a date has not been finalized, she said.

Did you take part in the rebuilding effort? I'd love to hear more.

I volunteered last week. It was a wonderful experience. I was astounded with how spectacularly organized and planned the operation was. I was impressed with the commitment of the Waverly residents that spearheaded the operation. I gained a new respect for the neighborhood. Any neighborhood with such committed residents is one to cherish. I wish this effort was covered more by news media. Baltimore needs to hear about city residents strongly dedicated to the welfare and upkeep of their neighborhood and commitment to their community and neighbors. Baltimore can be a city of exasperated residents served by apathetic and out of touch leaders. This playground project was a shining example of a collection of individuals banding together for a cause and commiting themselves to getting the job done.

We didn't help with the rebuilding, but we were over at the Y this morning and the playground looks amazing! Thanks so much to all the wonderful volunteers for such hard work.

P.S. I can't remember...were the arsonists who burned the original playground ever caught?

Our story this weekend says no one has been caught.

That's really a good news for everybody especially for kids who missed this playground so much.

I volunteered on Sat, May 9th and Sunday, May 10th. My mother's day was spent with some of the best people in Baltimore. My children are Y children, from daycare to camp to karate, so giving them the gift of a rebuilt playground was my way of ensuring that they see the good in people.

From seeing Mary Pat Clarke paint to Stan Stover shovel sand and chatting to students from all over Baltimore, this was a wonderful experience.

My boys can't wait to have "their" playground again.
Go Waverly!!!
