Mother's Day: Of mom entrepreneurs and fake flowers

Happy Mother's Day! I'm hoping you're all still asleep, but I wanted to see how you're doing on our special day. And to give you a few links for thought:

--Don't miss our story this morning on enterprising moms who stay home while running their own businesses. In this economy, that option is becoming more important to lots of families. These local moms, some of whom you may know, talk about the benefits and pitfalls.

--Kevin Cowherd writes about a survey in which adult children overwhelmingly picked Mom over Dad as the parent they'd prefer to have move in with them if necessary.

--And garden maven Susan Reimer says no thanks to a "budget-friendly," "fragrance-free" flower being touted as a Mother's Day gift.

What did you get for Mother's Day? I'm having a fantastic morning already at my father's house, where my daughter and I have traveled this weekend to see him conduct a concert. The concert went off beautifully last night, and now my dad and my daughter are making me Dad's famous blintzes.

I had a great day. I woke up and ran 6 miles with a group of women that I run with every Sunday. (Hard to get up for but totally worth it when it's done). Then church, then to Starbucks for a Frap. for Mom. Then I actually read the Sunday paper for the first time in weeks. After lunch we went for a long hike in Patapsco. The laundry is still not done, but I don't care. It's Mother's Day and I've only done what I felt like doing all day. There's something to be said about that when you have 4 kids...

I had the perfect Mother's Day! Went to Panera for breakfast (with about 8 million other people - LOL!) we rented the movie that *I* wanted to see - without protest - had a delicious dinner made for me by my wonderful boyfriend and wonderful son - and I didn't even have to clean up!!!!

I know the day wasn't exciting by most people standards, but it was EXACTLY what I wanted to do, no work, no whining, and lots and lots of love!!!

I took issue with the ultra-condescending term "mompreneur". It made me want to vomit into my trash basket. I am a business owner, I happen to have a child, and I am a woman (gasp!). No one calls male business owners (many of whom are fathers) "dadpreneurs".

I think it's time to put this term to rest.

By the same token, let's officially retire that other trite moniker "Mr. Mom".

Best Mother's Day presents ever. A heather plant in a pot they decorated themselves (amazingly well I might add) and a homemade book with a story about an alien named Joyce. Should I be concerned they named the alien after me?
