The Obama vegetable garden: A 7-year-old's view

Obama vegetable gardenSo I told Leah that the Obamas were planting a vegetable garden at the White House the other day. Here was her response:

"They need to stop with the fun and games. We've got big problems to solve!"

I didn't bother trying to persuade her that getting fresh, locally grown food to every family is a big problem. We all know how much she likes vegetables.

But it did tell me that consciousness of our other "big problems" is starting to seep down to the kid level.

If you're more interested in the Obama garden than my daughter was, hop over to my colleague Susan Reimer's new blog, Garden Variety.

Perhaps people should be listening to the voices of 7 year olds. Obviously they are more concerned about our country than a vegetable garden.

Very interesting insight on the part of your daughter...and at an early age. I'm impressed.

I have felt the same way. Have been saddened that the most we have to say about this Harvard-educated healthcare executive, mother of two, from Chicago's South Side, is that she's a snappy dresser. Especially during Women's History Month, I'd rather see Michelle out of the garden and the kitchen, and setting an example of how women contribute equally to their male counterparts in society. Read my Open Letter to Michelle Obama on my blog, at alligatorlegs.tumblr.com.

I grew up on a farm and my grandmother planted a garden every year--it fed a family of 6 until the frost killed everything. But by then we had frozen, canned, dried and preserved enough to last 2 years! Yes, Michelle is in the kitchen AND in the garden. Our children think that they can go into a store and, BOOM! We have all the food we need. Never imagining where it came from, how much hard work went into producing it. And most of them don't even know how real food tastes! Our overweight children, our science deficient children, our lack of imagination because of too much video games children, need to be in a garden! They can use/learn math skills, see science in action, experience what is happening with our weather patterns. Pay attention to what goes into their bodies and how detrimental plastic, nuked and over processed food is! I'm not impressed with a 7 year old who thinks that a garden is just a FUN activity. I am impressed with the kids in California at the Edible Schoolyard who learned not only how to produce their own healthy food, but also how to start their own businesses from working in GARDENS! Give this 7 year old a history book with the story of the Victory Garden during WWII. Michelle Obama knows what she's doing. You all obviously are too narrow minded to see what it is.

My son is a republican. I did not teach him to be a republican. I am not for or against republicans. In the school, the kids talk. They repeat what their parents say to other children. Everything one kid says becomes the gospel to the rest. Therefore, it is the strongest parent, the one who talks about politics and their views the most in the home, that wins. With that said, I am not suprised that your 7 year old had an opinion on the vegetable garden. Unfortunately she may be missing something else that is important: 1. the problems can't be solved in just one day; and 2. the president and his wife and family will not be at work every moment of every day. They do deserve some time off :) Although, in this particular instance, I don't believe Michelle is getting time off, I am sure this was a carefully planned activity.
