Tattooed Barbie

Barbie's turning 50 and having a mid-life crisis. The Los Angeles Times reports that Mattel is rolling out a tattooed Barbie, and opening a new Barbie megastore in Shanghai. (She's not just tattooed, but comes with a tattoo gun. I'm just thrilled. Here's a picture.)

Barbie has also joined Twitter, reporting recently that she "is back together with her boyfriend!" (I must be behind, because I didn't know Ken was on the outs. Or maybe it isn't Ken.)

Some parents, including Whoa, Momma!, have been up in arms over the tattooing; others, such the writer of the Idol Chatter blog, don't think it's such a big deal. You?

I personally put Halloween temp tattoos on my kids last year. So I could care less about tattooed Barbie. I have no tats myself, but if I have a problem with the toy? I don't buy it for my kids.

I don't think it's a big deal for me, personally since I have 2 tattoos, but I could understand why someone without tattoos wouldn't want to buy it. But it's just that - if you don't want it, don't buy it. Simple. People make big deals out of the smallest things!

I'm a married, 62 year old, father of four girls, ranging in age from 20 to 35. Our girls range from a high school education though a Masters Degree in Nursing, and from career gals to working moms.

All four of them are married or in long term relationships, and all of them have at least one tattoo.

I don't claim to understand the lure of tattoos. I spent two hitches in the Marines in the late 60's and early 70's and never succumbed to the peer pressure to get a tattoo but, tattoos seem to be an accepted way to express yourself with many of today's youth.

I fail to see how a Barbie doll that comes with "tattoo" stickers would have any more influence on a young mind than face painting at a county fair or circus.

Matell just recognized a market and responded to it.

Other Barbie ideas:

Wardrobe malfunction Barbie

Britney Barbie (comes with two toddlers and a snake)

Brangelina Barbie (Ken looks like Pitt, comes with several children)

Octo Mom Barbie...

You get the gist...

Personally, I have always been fascinated with body art. Even as a young girl growing up in a small town and being raised a strict Mormon. I see it as a way to express yourself, a way to show your dedication to something or someone, and a walking canvas for artists. I have one tattoo already, and plan on getting more once I'm done with college. It's a part of our generation and culture, just like tie dye and long hair were part of the 70's.
Besides, Barbie isn't anatomically correct anyway, and teaching girls that they have to be tall, skinny, big busted and have everything imaginable material wise is sending a far worse image than saying they shouldn't have tattoos. What's wrong with teaching our kids to love themselves and other people for who they are, instead of how they look?

o-k as long as barbie doesn't get
a "trash stamp"

This is not a 'NEW' Barbie it is just a remake of the Butterfly Art Barbie of a few years ago. It was recalled after they all sold out.

How about Oct Mom Barbie

So now we've got white trash tramp stamp Barbie. What's next...porn star Barbie? Junkie Barbie?

Oh my goodness! I'm tatted from head 2 to toe and I freakin love her! However, it's not even a tattoo gun, it looks like a barbie hair dryer with a trigger! People r way 2 up tight. I'm glad they made this barbie, now I can save money on sharpies... Haha.

Actually a tattooed Barbie would be a far more accurate representation of the majority of modern women. Their all a part of that 'I'm an individual' generation that include women and men that looks like everyone else in their generation. You know, the generation that does the karate dance moves on television commercials.

Tatoos are simply unflattering ... especially as a woman ages. Ever seen a sixty year old woman with a bunch of saggy, stretched out, faded tatoos? Its one thing on a man but on a woman there is nearly nothing more unbecoming. Furthermore, tatoos are the antithesis of femininity ... they are for butch chicks not girls who like Barbie! YUCK!

I don't see any problems with the Tattoo Barbie. I am a mom of 3 and have almost 20 tats and I do not plan to stop. Tats are a way for a person to express themselves and Tattooing is not the disease ridden process that most people think. Tattoos have become a part of society. Oh by the way, it's not a "tattoo gun" it's a tattoo machine. Guns kill, tats are mearly one person taste in art.

Butterfly Barbie was introduced in 1999 and was NEVER recalled. It was only meant to be available for one year. All this uproar seems to be coming from the fact that a collector has opened an auction to resell this doll on EBAY. Happy 50th Birthday, Barbie!

FYI ... The Barbie does NOT actually have tattoos on her body anywhere. But rather they come in the package and the child can apply them if they choose to.

Prejudices are simply unflattering ... especially as a woman ages. Ever seen a sixty year old woman with a bunch of saggy, stretched out, faded prejudices? It's one thing on a man but on a woman there is nearly nothing more unbecoming. Furthermore, prejudices are the antithesis of femininity ... they are for chauvinist bigots not girls who like Barbie! YUCK!

Personally no it isn't a big deal that Barbie got a tattoo. Shouldn't people be making a bigger deal of them making Barbie look like a tramp with the clothes that are available to her?

Im actually offended and appalled by the comment that only butch women get tattoos. I personally have 5 tattoos i have a fantastic career im also just 22 and consider myself very feminine looking.
Tattoos can be beautiful art and this barbie sounds fun and different.
If you dont want your little girls and boys playing with tattoo barbie then dont let them but really it is not a huge deal. I would MAYBE buy it if she/he really wanted it but obviously there would be conversations with her/him.

Hey.. maybe ill get one for myself!

This is NOT a big deal. WAY less important than you teaching your kids that its okay to have sex before marriage if you use a condom...kids get little wash off tattoos all the time...get over it

As a heavily tattooed woman who works in the tattoo industry I take great offense to being compared to "porn stars, junkies, & white trash". I'm a mother, a college graduate, & I work very hard to give my children a good life. My tattoos are a part of who I am & I will never be ashamed of that. Even when I'm "60 & sagging". As for the doll, all it is is a Barbie & some temporary tattoos. I would have actually liked to see Barbie with tattoos. Oh well. Baby steps.

The idiot saying tattoos are for butch women is probably the same perv fantasizing about young edgy tattooed girls.

I Hate that "women shouldnt have tattoos" crap!
ANyone who thinks that it takes away from women being "womenly" and Beautiful Is a flat out Jerk who Cant be comfortable with themself!

And when Your sixty and "Saggin" I think that Stretched out tats look better then stretched out liverspots! and by then who really cares? ( oh and I havent seen that many sixty Y.O. that are "saggin". maybe LATE 60s and 70"s.)

There's absolutely nothing wrong with tattoos. Even when a Barbie all off a sudden comes with little heart and butterfly tattoos that children can stick off and wash off. It is seriously the end of the world? My god there are more important things to be worrying about, like if your children start doing drugs or join a gang. Why are some of these mothers mad about a Barbie with fake tattoos? As for the "women at sixty with the saggy tattoos", like other people have said, i've never seen an older women with 'saggy' tattoos. And if i did see one she'd look like a total badass.
