A tip from Julia Roberts -- don't tell us we look tired

Julia RobertsJulia Roberts, mother of three, is on the cover of the March issue of Allure with a wide-ranging interview about all things domestic. I was amused by this blurb from the interview from bumpshack, in which Roberts confesses that somebody once asked her when her baby was due....after she'd, um, already had him, and he was right there on her hip.

She also says that she hates it when people tell her she looks tired.

But what puzzles me is that Roberts suggests that instead of saying she looks tired, that people should say instead that she "looks like a mom." What...does...that...mean exactly?

It's particularly interesting -- maybe even ironic -- given that Allure has her glammed up for its photo shoot, reading a kids' book in heavy makeup under the headline: "Domestic Goddess." I don't really know any moms who look like this, at least when their kids are around.

Ugh, annoying. I think sometimes, as a mom, I look tired, and other times, still a mom, I look OK. I think it's disparaging for "like a mom" to be a euphemism for looking tired. I sort of see where she was going with that idea, but I don't think it quite worked out.

She's repulsive. Even with tons of makeup and special lighting every one of those pictures has been photoshopped to change her appearance to be more pleasing to the freaks that run those magazines.

There was a great article in the New Yorker last year about how they photoshop all those magazine photos, even moving body parts around digitally.

I disagree with her. Instead of saying, "You look like a mom," how about saying, "You look great!" Or even better, "Can I help you with anything?" 'You look tired' is just a euphemism for 'you look like crap' anyway.

When she works full time, doesn't have nanny's or house staff and her husband is away a lot.....we'll talk tired mom of three.....she doesn't know what tired is.

I agree with Julia. It is a look that ALL moms, from every walk of life, have. None to be excluded. It is also a look I would never regret.
