Surprise! School's out ....15 minutes ago

It always brightens my day to get a text message at 12:15 p.m. that because of heating problems, school has closed -- at noon.

I rushed to school with irrational visions of my children freezing alone on the corner. Of course, the teachers would never leave them by themselves, and of course, a lot of other parents got the text late, too. We were all running up the hill in a panic with the same crazy thoughts, trying to make last-minute arrangements on our cell phones. And then we found our kids, perfectly happy in their classrooms and waiting for us.

Now I could use a tranquilizer....

Does your school have a phone chain? Or have text messages replaced that concept?

Texts are the latest vehicle, and in theory they should work. But for some reason, there are times when the school is announced as "closed" before the text even goes out.

Even better: only 5 schools were closing, but the WBAL text message said ALL the city schools were closing. And they declined to send a correction! WBAL should be ashamed!

Ha! That day was so hectic. I received a call from my child's teacher asking me to call the parents of the other students. Of course, I did not have a helper or did not think of asking for help and called the last parents at 12:45!!! My daughter's teacher only knew at 12:15 though. I felt it was somewhat irresponsible of BCPSS....
