American Girl retires Samantha
Sad news for lovers of poor little rich girl Samantha Parkington, one of the first American Girl dolls -- she's being "archived." That means the 1904-era doll and her collection -- including best friend Nellie -- soon won't be available for purchase, though Samantha books will continue to be.
This had particular resonance for me because, as faithful readers will remember, after months of deliberation my daughter decided Samantha was the American Girl she wanted. We went to the American Girl Place in Los Angeles, where my in-laws live, to pick her out. I'll always remember how Leah scanned those rows of Samanthas to choose just the right one.
I asked American Girl spokeswoman Susan Jevens when the collection would officially go off the market...

She wrote back that there's no date set yet, and that it will depend on inventory and demand for Samantha products. She said fans should watch the catalogue and web site for more information.
She wrote that since Samantha has been around for 22 years, it seemed the right time to "preserve her place in history" and make room in the catalogue and retail stores to introduce new characters and products.
How do you American Girl fans feel about the news?

I was not aware that Samantha was leaving the American Girl Line. One of the home shopping channels recently had an "American Girl' segment and a rep from the company made no mention of this fact. I always liked Samantha and her story line because it represented a time and place we will never see again. My own daughter choose Molly. I also like the Civil War doll so much, because of my interest in that time period. I've resisted purchasing though because I'm afraid I'll go overboard and buy everything connected to this doll. This dolls, though pricey, are a lot of fun and the quality is definitely there.

Wow, so it was probably 20 years ago that I got my Samantha doll. Nostalgia makes me a little sad that they are retiring the doll, but I am glad they are keeping the books around. My favorite series at the time was actually the WWII era one.

I'm really sad aboutt he Samantha retirement. She has always been my 10 year old daughter's favorite. I understand that it makes the dolls more special when they go but it still sad for a 10 year old.

I CANNOT BELIEVE IT!!!!! :( WHY? I don't get it. It seems as if the world is going up-side-down. Samantha and Nellie our my best friends like other young girls. They have ALWAYS comforted me when I'am sad. For instance, I went to both my grandmother's wake and funeral and my popie's, and Samantha and Nellie were there and helped me through the day. I just think that they are like a part of us girls who love to be understood through these remarkable little sisters that are 18" tall. This is why they ashould be kept for generations to come.

possibly because Nellie is a Christian and they are anti-Christian

I'm disappointed in the way AG handled Samantha's departure. I received notice less than two weeks ago and subsequently placed several orders, but missed out on a couple items that have since been sold out. AG should have announced Samantha's retirement at the beginning of the year, much like they do their "Girl of the Year" dolls. This would have given customers a better opportunity to add to their collection before she is gone forever. Given our struggling economy, and AG's not-so-economical prices, it's not always easy to buy items all at once. AG should have shown more consideration for their customers needs. I've contacted AG to voice my opinion, and I would encourage anyone who shares my view to do the same.

I feel sad because Samantha was my first doll from AG so when I got the letter I was really sad, and I didn't get why they had to take Nellie away. I will miss them very much, and I also think that Samantha and Nellie should have stayed since they were so popular. Why are you throwing her in the store room? Are you going to replace her with another doll? It's just not fair!!!!! Will you do it with other dolls? What if someone asks for Samantha doll what will you do? You should feel really guilty for what you have done to Samantha and Nellie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I really wish they weren't archiving her! I am looking all over the place to find somewhere or someone who will sell me a Samantha and Nellie for cheap and ships to Ireland.

I love Samantha and I think yes Samantha has been around along time, but when I took my daughter to the american girl doll store more then half the girls held samantha and it seems she has been made most famous. I did not see a single girl holding Kaya or Josahina, Samantha Kirsten and Molly are the original dolls they have a right to stay in the catalog and in little girls hearts.

Are you people serious? They are DOLLS. Nice dolls, but still DOLLS. AG is a for profit company. These decisions are made for business purposes. Guess what? Neither AG, nor the dolls themselves care about you. Don't get delusional. It's a company like any other. If Firestone stops making radial tires, I will not freak out. This is no different.

Yes they are dolls, yes they don't talk and yes the company is for profit but these dolls are special to children and to me (I have had my Smantha since I was a little girl). They hold a place in our hearts and I am sure you have something that is in your heart you would be devastated about and that to all of us is Samantha. My daughter has never held any other possesion this close to her heart. Everyday she brings home a short story they wrote in class and more then half of them are stories of adventures she went on with Samantha or a part of a Samantha book or even how she dreams to go to the american girl doll store with Samantha and have lunch, tee time, see the play, and just sit in Smanatha's room and dream. I have never seen a little girl so passionate. You may be thinking mine is weird and different but she is like any other six year old, she has normal friends and sure Samantha isn't her only friend but she is one and she is more then just a doll to many children ,and parents around the world. I charish the doll and so does my little girl. You may have never found anything special in her but others have and I wish for you to respect that.

I've had my Samantha doll for seventeen years, and I find it crushing to have them take her stuff off the market. My family never had a lot of money so I never got to buy the furinture and had to slowly add oufits to my collection, with all that they've added over the twenty two years I'm not finished, not to mention the items that got lost because you can not deny a five year old her dollie. My mom started the whole American girl obbession in our family because of this doll, seeing as we share a name and we've both been in the world for the same amount of time. I wish they would give us more time, by the time I knew about it most items were sold out. I will miss her terribly.

I WILL DIE IF IT SERIUSLY HAPPENS!!!!!!!!!

This is an outrage, Samantha has been around for 22 years because she is so greatly loved and it is cruel and foolish to discontinue her. My mom was going to take me down to America to buy Samantha this spring but now I will never get the chance and neither will my baby cousin who is just starting to get interested in American girl dolls. Not to mention how Samantha is a great part of history that has been around for to decades and now is just being pushed aside . American Girl dolls are so well liked because of there historical value and cute faces. Now American girl is becoming just another Barbie doll!

Hey, that comment from "Mike" about being able to buy her stuff at "myauctionlinks.com" is a well-disguised spam comment. I clicked through and searched for Samantha stuff, and found that that makes it redirect to eBay - it is a spam site using what google calls "scraped content" and probably gets some sort of affiliate bonus from each sale.
(And for the record, as of this writing, eBay has a few sellers still offering reasonable prices, and then a whole BUNCH of people selling accessories for $190 instead of $40, $90 instead of $20, etc.)

I'm so glad I still have my Samantha Doll. She was my first American Girl Doll. I have a collection of 3 from around 1994! Samantha, Kristen and a personalized doll.

DISCOVERING THESE DOLLS IN THE EARLY 90'S WHEN THEY WERE PLEASANT CO. WAS VERY EXCITING. THE QUALITY AND HISTORICAL ACCURACY WAS UNMATCHED BY ANY OTHER DOLL MAKER. WORTH EVERY PENNY. NOW, IT IS ALL COMING TO A SAD END. MATTELL HAS TAKEN OVER, AND THEY HAVE ALREADY MANAGED TO CHEAPEN THE LOOK OF THE FACES, AND THE HAIR QUALITY DOES NOT EVEN COME CLOSE TO THE OLDER DOLLS. SAMANTHA , GONE. KIRSTEN. GONE, NEST PROBABLY MOLLY AND SO ON, UNTILL ALL PLEASANT CO ISSUE DOLLS AND ACCESSORIES WILL BE NO MORE. MORE PLASTIC MORE JUNK WILL FILTER ITS WAY IN UNDER THE MATTELL NAME, NEXT THING YOU KNOW, WE WILL BE SEEING THIS PRODUCT ON WALMART SHELVES LOOKING CHEAP JUST LIKE ALL THE NEW INFERIOR BARBIES. WHAT A SHAME. SOUNDS TO ME LIKE THE PLEASANT CO COPYWRIGHT AGREEMENT BETWEEN PLEASANT CO AND MATTELL IS COMING TO A SWIFT END. 1998 - 2009 ? ELEVEN YEARS? HMMM. WELL, BETTER GET ALL THE PLEASANT CO. ITEMS I CAN FIND FROM EBAY BEFORE IT BECOMES IMPOSSIBLE TO AFFORD. EVEN THEN, I WOULD RATHER PAY TRIPLE FOR A PLEASANT CO ISSUE ITEM, THAN TO PURCHASE ANY MATTEL ISSUE STOCK PRETENDING TO BE AMERICAN GIRL. THERE WAS ONLT ONE AND IT WAS PLEASANT CO. AMERICAN GIRLS.
