Tip Sheet Thursday: Ice cream parlor favorites

Broom's Bloom DairyBefore summer ends, here are a few favorite ice cream shops for kids. So far submissions have been a little thin, so keep them coming; remember, our comment contest, featuring a $50 Target gift card as the prize, is still going on:

Broom's Bloom Dairy, Bel Air. This Harford County farm, run by nine generations of the Dallam family, serves hand-dipped, homemade ice cream that's worth a trip, says Shani. (I love their phone number: 410-399-COWS.)

Uncle Wiggly's, 6911 York Rd., Stoneleigh, 410-377-3373. Our family likes the range of Edy's ice cream flavors at this place (kids' current favorite: Crazy Vanilla), and the pleasant patio.

North Pole Ice Cream, Highlandtown. Robert is a fan of this place. Love the name.

Hoffman's Home Made Ice Cream & Deli, Westminster. In a recent Takeout column, Rob Kasper picked their peach ice cream as his Best Bargain.

Lee's Ice Cream on York Road just north of Gittings. Upsides: You can get ice cream AND Fractured Prune donuts under one roof. And Kasper picked its peach ice cream as Best Bite. Downside: Last time we visited, I thought it was a bit pricey.

Also, not an ice cream parlor, but our boys go crazy over Rita's. It's almost sad watching them close down in the Fall.

We love Taharka Brothers (formerly Sylvan Beach) -- ice cream for a good cause! For snowballs/snowcones, nothing beats Snoasis at Greenspring Station.

True, nothing beats Snoasis. But I'd say nothing beats the Snoasis on Padonia Road, which I think is the original. Used to be around the corner in a trailer in front of Cockeysville Library.

Anyway, back to ice cream. I vote for Moxley's in Towson.

I vote for Cold Stone Creamery.

I would have to vote for the Cow soft ice cream in Reisterstown on Main Street.

We love Meadow's in White Marsh/Perry Hall. Their vanilla custard is the best and I love their sundaes. And, they have italian ice all year long.

Not a "parlor" per se, and it's a bit of a hike from Baltimore...but Jimmy Cone in Damascus, MD gets my vote. Their soft serve is to die for...

Are you kidding me? How could you miss SIMMONS HOMEADE ICE CREAM in Snydersburg. I dare you to find a better raspberry ice cream (when in season). The standard vanilla, chocolate and strawbery are all solid. Combo that with a softball game on the ballfield in back of the store and a trip to Cascade Lake (within walking distance) and you've got yourself the perfect getaway with the kids.

I like Maggie Moo's. They have great ice cream and great combinations. My husband and I ordered just 1 kid size cup and split it, and both of us were very fulfilled. Delicious!

Moxley's in Towson

Hoffman's in Westminster

I'm surprised no one mentioned Pitango Gelato in Fells Point! They are a little pricey compared to other places, but the gelato is OH SO GOOD. And the small sizes actually seem fairly filling when you eat them with the small spoons they provide. Then we go around the corner to peruse the toys at aMuse.

I keep hearing so much about Broom's Bloom and North Pole Ice Cream but I've not been to either yet. Thus far, I 'm with Carol - Cold Stone Creamery is the BEST, especially for their ice cream cakes - sooo yummy! I love how they're made with real cake batter - not "crunchy" stuff they call "cake".

Another vote for Hoffman's in Westminster - great milkshakes too!

Bruster's--without a doubt the BEST ice cream. Unfortunately, only two locations nearby--Eastern Avenue and Aquehart in Glen Burnie. Look at their website.

Cold Stone Ice Creamery in Pikesville is better than _ well let's just say, it's satisfying. My husband and I take the family on the weekends to hang out, talk and simply relax in the sitting area outside the shop.

another vote for moxley's here, although i do miss their old bay ice cream. their ice cream sandwhich flavor is great. i miss their timonium store location with the krispy kreme in the parking hot. a favorite treat would be to get a scoop of moxley's cinnamon served over a hot original glazed krispy kreme. the cinnamon ice cream would slowly melt while eatting it and the flavor would fuse with the sugary glaze blending in a matter whereas the cinnamon tased as it were coming from the warm donut as well.

i wonder if lee's has a cinnamon ice cream to do this with the superior fractured prune donuts :)

I second Pitango in Fell's Point. Yes, pricey, but such good quality ingredients - and somehow even though it is richer than normal ice cream, it is better for you? They have signs explaining, but I can't remember exactly why...

I tried North Pole and it was awesome I vote for them.

Bomboys on Market St in Havre de Grace gets my vote.Great walk around town with a neat front porch at the store.

Thank you for the kudos for Hoffman's! I have been going there for at least 15 years. They make fantastic ice cream cakes which I have bought every year for either my or my kids' birthdays.

MaggieMoo's of Quarry Lake (Pikesville) is the absolute best. My kids love to go there. The dark chocolate is to die for!!!
