Tip Sheet Thursday: Deals on school supplies

Here are a few ideas I picked up online today about school-supply sales. If you've found other deals, please share:

--J.C. Penney is listing a great price on kids' backpacks -- $11.99, less than half their normal price -- on ShopLocal for Friday and Saturday.

--If you like Lands' End backpacks and lunch boxes, they're $5 off through Aug. 27 at this link.

--Also at ShopLocal, Walgreens has a coupon for a 10-pack of #2 pencils for 9 cents, good through Saturday (limit: 4 packs). You can't really beat that with a stick...

--KQ Mom mentioned a good deal on composition pads at Staples; it's running through Saturday. A 6-pack of yellow highlighters is $1, and two-pocket folders appear to be free with instant rebate (limit 10). All of this is while supplies last. Leave some for me, won't you, folks?

Each week Staples has a few school supplies for 1 cent or a quarter. (Obviously there is a limit). We got cute staplers for a quarter and some pencil cases for a penny last week!

You may also want to check into Sam Club, K- Mart, or the new Target out Mondawmin Mall, they are having a wonderful grand opening sale.

I haven't had to buy school supplies for my kids yet. But I did get an email from a company called EZSchoolSupplies that offers tons of different brands for competetive prices. i don't know how they compare, but it might be an option for someone not able to drive around looking for deals. they also donate part of their proceeds to schools.

Here's my back-to-school shopping tip. Splurge a little on a backpack and buy it at LLBean where you'll get a lifetime warranty. If anything ever goes wrong with it, they'll replace it or credit it towards another bag. Plus, there's something to be said for an ergonomically friendly backpack when you're lugging around half your weight in books.

I bought one my freshman year of high school. I was tired of my bag ripping every year.

After a few years with my LLBean backpack, the zipper broke and they happily exchanged it for a brand new one. I used that one all through college until a plastic buckle broke. I went back and traded it for a nice fancy new one that I used all through law school and still use for travel today. That one is 8 years old now and looks as good as the day I got it.

Also at Staples, through Saturday, 70pg spiral notebooks, a 6-pack is only 30 cents (limit of 3 per person, per day). We've stopped by twice this week, getting 10 free 2-pocket folders both times. Might go back tomorrow too since we'll be driving by.

Be sure to check out Staples, Office Max and Office Depot ads in the Sunday paper. We bought boxes of 8 pencils for a penny last month, along with penny containers of pocket size hand sanitzer.

Lands End is also offering free shipping on backpacks and select other items through Aug. 12th. Enter the Promotion Code APPLE and the PIN 830713778 in the space provided. For online shoppers EZ School Supplies: http://www.ezschoolsupplies.com/shop/index.php is a great site. Just enter your supply list and they'll get the items together and ship to directly to you!

I like Big Lots for back to school shopping. Not only do they have good prices in general on school staples, but clothing basics, too, like recently I found 4 pair pack of Shrek and other character boy's briefs for $2, and also 6 pr of socks, all sizes, $3.33! Sure, they may be off brand or "irregulars" but who can tell? And
I've not heard of a kid saying they need "Juicy" or "Tommy" socks. Save where you can!
