Share your best bake-sale goodies

Cupcakes with chocolate ganache

With school and all its fundraising needs looming, I'm playing around with a story idea for the Taste section on new tricks and sure-fire hits for bake sales. And, of course, I'm looking for your help.

What are the best sellers at your school bake sales, and why? Will you share your best recipes in the comments below?

I'll test the ones I find most intriguing, and if they turn out well, I'll print them in the paper and/or on our web site.

I love these brownies because they use reduced fat yogurt in place of oil. Two brownies are only 20 calories, and the recipe is easy to adjust to add some whole wheat flour or a sprinkle of ground flaxseed.

This one is always popular, a variation of the original Rice Krispies Treats:

Try cocoa krispies, use Kraft chocolate flavored marshmallows, and then stir in a bag of semi-sweet chocolate chips with the cereal.

My oldest daughter is just heading to kindergarten this year, so I'll be entering the "late night preparing for tomorrow's bake sale" club soon, I'm sure!

As for a favorite, these little hamburger cookies were always a huge hit when I taught elementary school. There are a few variations, but here's one recipe...

INGREDIENTS

* 24 vanilla wafer cookies
* 12 small peppermint patties
* 4 drops green food coloring
* 12 medium green gumdrops, sliced
* 2 tablespoons sesame seeds
* 4 small rolls of apricot fruit leather
* 1/2 cup flaked coconut

DIRECTIONS

1. Place the coconut and the food coloring in a bowl with a lid. Shake till all coconut is covered. Set aside.
2. Place 12 of the vanilla wafers flat side up on a cookie sheet. After unwrapping all of the peppermint patties, place them on top of the wafers.
3. Unwrap the fruit roll-ups (optional) and cut into squares. Place on top of the all of the patties to look like cheese. Then place the sliced gumdrops on the top of that. Add the coconut.

Here is an easy one - "S'more Brownies"

Bake brownies according to recipe. As soon as finished pull pan from the oven and pour over the brownies a mix of Mini-Marshmallows and Chocolate Chips (I usually do about a cup, cup and 1/2 of each).

Place back in the oven for about a minute or so - pull out pan and spread melted mixture with an icing knife. If need be - put back into oven and repeat until you get a nice consistency and melding of flavors.

When done, remove from oven and place graham crackers (broken into quarters) completely over the brownie mixture.

When cool, slice according to the graham cracker placement. Easily made and ALWAYS a hit.
