Finding a moms' group

In the couple of months that I've been writing this blog, I've been trying to gather information about moms' clubs around the area to tell you about.

Mother's Day Week seems like a good time to publish what I've got so far. Maryland parents are all over cyberspace (and sometimes they get together in person, of course). Here are some groups I've learned about:

(Click below for the list. ...)

--Maryland Mommies, a membership-only group with events and online discussion forums.

--Baltimore Mommies is another free private discussion forum for moms in Baltimore, Howard, Eastern Carroll and Northern Anne Arundel counties, with some in-person meetups.

--Chesapeake Mommies is part of the same network as Baltimore Mommies, and has the same format. It covers Harford, Cecil and Kent counties.

--There are lots of Maryland moms' groups on Yahoo!, from the specific to the broad.

--Meetup.com also has scads of local groups, for working moms, SAH moms, and on and on. Here are local search results.

Are you in a moms' group? Tell us what it does for you, and whether it's been worth your time. (Remember, you can post under a handle or anonymously here, so you can be brutally honest.) Which are the best you've tried?

Also, I'm sure I've left somebody out. Please fill us in about any other local parents' groups that accept new members.

Are there any moms groups in the Baltimore area that are devoted to working moms? By this, I mean meet-ups in the evening and on weekends? I haven't had any luck finding such a group. Anyone know?

I think the best way to bond with other moms is to start right away, when your baby is just a newborn. You wouldn't believe how many other moms are out there wishing they could find other moms as well. I swear you will not find a better way to meet other moms than by going to the new mom's group at GBMC, run by DeeDee Franke. The group meets on Tuesdays from 10:00ish to about 2:00pm. Everybody there has a baby that is 8 weeks old or younger. I first went when my daughter was 12 days old, and I have become very close friends with 11 other moms. All of our babies are the same age within about 2 weeks of each other. Not only will you find other moms and become friends with them, but you will get practical advice from DeeDee as well - even if you think you are doing well and don't need the advice, you will enjoy the group and enjoy DeeDee!

Does the new mom's group at GBMC have a fee? How long does a session last? Can one join at any time or are there "enrollment" periods? Anything more people had to share would be very helpful!

Amy, the GBMC web site has a little more information:
http://www.gbmc.org/parented/support.cfm

It appears that the group is still free up to 12 weeks. Then I think some of the moms break off and continue meeting on their own. Anyway, there's a phone number to call for more; if I can get more information later, I'll post it.

I attended this group with my first baby, and it was crucial help at a time when I really felt I didn't know anything!

MyMarylandMommies.com is the greatest!! Without MM I think I would have gone insane by now. Being a SAHM I was getting kinda depressed w/o adult contact all day. Now... I can't wait to get on and chat with all my friends!

BaltimoreMommies.com has been a lifesaver for me. I am a SAHM to 4 kids, 2 who are with me during the day. Baltimore Mommies has been a great resource for me to get advice on so many different topics. Everyone at Baltimore Mommies is so friendly and welcoming. When I first joined I was very nervous, but quickly got over that as soon as I saw how friendly all the other mom's were.

We do many activities for children of all ages such as park visits, play dates, meeting for coffee and even have mom's night outs.

I would like to encourage any mom out there searching for a mommy group to join to consider Baltimore Mommies. You will not regret it! So, go to www.baltimoremommies.com and join in on the fun right now!!

www.marylandmommy.com is the link for Maryland Mommy which was omitted in the earlier post.

I am a member of maryland mommies ! I LOVE this site so much we are a great bunch of ladies and i have made so many new friends Thanks to Sun for posting this !!

I joined www.BaltimoreMommies.com shortly after it was founded a year ago. At first I was a little hesitant about participating in an online Mom's Group. As a mom in her 30's, I wasn't too familiar with online forums. However, within a week , I was totally hooked and I realized it was a perfect fit for me.

I have three young children and was having a tough time meeting moms the "traditional" way. My friends with children lived in other states, our neighborhood doesn't have many young families and though I'd meet moms at area parks, it was difficult to hold a real conversation while watching my little ones. I joined another local moms' group and, while the women were great, again it was tough to have conversations only at playgroups. My kids had fun, but I wasn't making the friendships I was craving.

The online forums at BaltimoreMommies, coupled with lots of in-person activities, are the perfect combination for busy moms. You can use the online forums to connect with other moms at your leisure (naptime, in the evenings, at 2 in the morning, etc.) without the interruptions of little ones. I can share recipes, ask parenting questions, talk about TV shows, and even participate in an online book club! I really feel that I can get to know moms through posting online and then all the in-person activities just make those friendships grow stronger.

My children love the little friends they've made and I certainly enjoy meeting so many wonderful moms and starting real friendships for myself. I really can't thank BaltimoreMommies enough for making motherhood so much more enjoyable for me!

BaltimoreMommies.com is a fantastic group of moms. Everyone is extremely friendly and helpful, and it really makes you feel like part of a community. I know that every time I have had a concern, or have just plain been excited about something, all of the other mommies on BaltimoreMommies have been there with help, insight, support, kind words, commiseration, or excitement right along with me.

There really is something on the site for everyone, including a support group with evening/weekend events planned with working moms in mind.

So, if you are looking to connect with other moms and really feel like part of a community, definitely check out BaltimoreMommies.com!!

www.MarylandMommy.com is a wonderful group of moms and they do stuff ALL the time.

There are frequent playdates and walks and stuff for working moms too!

Come check us out -- everyone is super friendly!

www.mymarylandmommies.com was started to give other Mommies a chance to make new friends for themselves and their children. Since the beginning of Maryland Mommies, I have met so many amazing Mommies and have made lifelong friends. I don't know what I would do without these great Mommies in my life.
We are a FREE non-profit Mommies group for the entire state of Maryland as well as its surrounding areas. We have Mommies from every corner of Maryland. Each area's calendar usually has something going on weekly including playdates during the week and on the weekends, group dinners, Moms Night Out and family get-togethers. Our focus is also Community Service and we pride ourselves on giving back to our individual communities on a regular basis.
I can tell you that the feedback that I hear most often about Maryland Mommies is the fact that everyone is so laid back and friendly. It's just like family!
So come by and check us out - www.mymarylandmommies.com.

Maryland Mommy has offered so much support for me. I joined when I was a month away from my due date with my first child. I didnt have any college friends that were moms and thought this site offered support, education I was looking for.

I was attending playgroups and luncheons before my Daughter was born and getting to know other moms. Now I have developed life long friendships with these ladies.

The site has forums on every subject imaginable and also a chatbox to get instant answers to your questions. We are super friendly and chatty.

I found BaltimoreMommies.com almost a year ago! I have to say I LOVE LOVE LOVE this site, the women, the kids, THE ADULT CONTACT, the activities, the Moms night outs (WHEW HOO!)... gosh this list can go on & on! :)

It's been a wonderful resource as a 1st time mother, the forums are packed with info and helpful mommas that are there to reassure that yes my toddlers urge to have his finger rammed up his nose 24/7 is a normal phase along with the many other oddities that come along with being a mother!

The gals in this group range of all ages and backgrounds, the diversity is what makes this place WONDERFUL! I am proud to be apart of the the www.BaltimoreMommies.com team AND to be a member! I feel lucky and privileged to have this army of moms by my side! I truly do love this site and what it has done for both my son and me!

I joined Baltimore Mommies almost a year ago. I have never regretted joining this group. I love the online discussions we have and the fact I can join in when I have the time. I also love the friendships I have made thru online and in person meetups. Baltimore Mommies offers something for everyone. We have working moms as well as stay at home moms. I love that we are all there to support each other whether it is a mom returning to work or a mom that has had a day that we just need to vent. This is a great group of women and you won't be lonely with this group. Please consider joining Baltimore Mommies and you won't be sorry.

I'm currently a member of www.MarylandMommy.com. I'm a working mom who had a hard time finding other moms with kids to do things with in the area. I joined because I wanted my daughter to have little friends to play with and I wanted to make friends as well! This group is just what I was looking for! A lot of other groups really cater to the SAHM crowd and I always felt left out. I'm glad I found all of the amazing women at www.MarylandMommy.com. Come check us out if you get the chance. :)

If you live in downtown Baltimore and aren't already on a parent listserve (there are several, generally neighborhood specific) you can get hooked up by checking out dbfam.org. We're a new non-profit devoted to making downtown Baltimore a great place for families. We can hook you up with a playgroup, or just provide info. The site should be more complete in a week or so, but there is an email contact there (info@dbfam.org) and some general stuff.

Thanks for adding this!

I am a proud member of www.marylandmommy.com This mom group is made up of such a wonderfully diverse group of women! From stay at home moms to full time working moms to military moms to single moms and the list goes on! We are a very friendly group and meet quite a few times a month for walks, lunches, mom nights out, picnics, etc. If you have questions, they are answered right away through the chatbox or the many forums!!! What a supportive bunch of ladies!! Maryland Mommy is the place to make friends for you and your little ones!

I found the MD Mommies to be cliquey. If you have not been there since the begining, don't bother going to the big mommy meetups. No one will talk to you.

Maryland Mommy is a GREAT mommy site. The url is www.marylandmommy.com and I have been a member for almost one year...don't know what I ever did without it!

www.marylandmommy.com is simply the best group of moms I've ever had the pleasure of knowing. They are so accepting and supportive, no matter how old or young you are or what you life experiences have been. There is zero politics and zero drama and everyone just gets along and enjoys the common bond of motherhood!

In my experience Maryland Mommy (www.marylandmommy.com - not to be confused with the site listed by the same name but a different URL) is THE BEST moms club around.

First of all, it is completely FREE. The moms I have met there are the nicest people I know. I have made many true and lasting friendships through this site.

The site has many support groups, special interest groups, and fun activities online. One of the most popular groups is our private weight loss forum.

There is always someone to chat with if you are lonely, bored, or just want someone to listen. Our chatbox appears on every page of the forum (once you have met a small post count minimum) so you can always jump right in to a conversation.

We have a mix of working and stay at home moms, as well as moms with children of a wide range of ages. There is truly something for everyone. There is an activity planned on our calendar for nearly every day of every month. And, unlike the other moms groups, our calendar is accessible to EVERY member to post events, not only members of the leadership team. We have frequent playdates, zoo trips, walks, moms nights out, etc. There are plenty of opportunities to get involved online, face to face, or both.

Our members have a lot of heart. We recently raised $1,768 (and counting) for the March of Dimes March for Babies. We also come together as a group to provide meals to the families of our members after the birth of a new baby or medical difficulties. We are truly a community and we care for one another. It's no wonder our members can't stop talking about how wonderful our site is.

I feel like the members of the site are like members of my own family. Come check us out, you won't regret joining www.marylandmommy.com and we welcome new members with open arms!

I love BaltimoreMommies! My daughter was just 6 weeks old when i joined. She is now almost 13 months! This FREE supported site for Moms of ALL types (SAHM, WOHM, Adoptive Moms, etc) is the best i could have ever asked for!! Nothing beats being apart of this wholesome family of moms and their children.

Maryland Mommy ( www.MarylandMommy.com) is the best moms group I have ever belonged to. One of the things I like best about the site is how welcome the group makes you feel when you join. Other groups I have joined make you feel like you are an outsider, but not this group, all the ladies are so friendly and kind. Whenever I have a question, need to vent, or just need some adult interaction someone is always on. I also really enjoy that are so many different types of moms on the site, therefor you get a wide range of opinions and ideas. There is always some sort of event on our calender, so my son and I always have something to do.
I have only been a member for a few short months, and I have no clue how I got along before I joined Maryland Mommy.

www.marylandmommies.com is a wonderful site! I can't get to any of the M-F activites but have great support on the board during the week and look forward to family days on the weekends! Unlike other Mom's groups who never include Dad's in the area, this is something that my entire family is apart of!

MM (www.marylandmommy.com) has been a life saver for me. We moved to Maryland 11 months ago and for the longest time I hadn't met any other mommys. I was getting very bored and lonely. Then I Stumbled across MM and from that first day I was hooked. I now have lots of freinds and my son (4) and I go on lots of playdates and have a lot of fun with the other mommy and kids. Everyone on MM is so freindly and helpful. (we are even getting together to help someone who is having surgery by providing meals) Theres always someone to help out when you need it and always someone to talk to. We have a very full calendar so theres always something to do.
MARYLAND MOMMY I LOVE YOU!!!
Join us and find out just how great it is.

Hi I am currently and active member of MarylandMommy.com. I am a full time working mom who felt like i was the only one out there. Until one day my bestfriend introduced me to this site. I absolutely love it! It has introduced me to other working and sahm in my areas. Its great we are constantly having playdates where we get together. I love being a part of this group. We do everything from play dates to storking(making meals for new mommies) and making meals for people who just had surgery. where else can you go where complete strangers are so welcoming! I LOVE MARYLAD MOMMY!!!! Come check us out! and meet your new friends!

Marylandmommy.com Rocks!

This site means so much to me that it's hard to capture it in words... It's a great place with so many great women that there's no way to do it justice here.

I have never found MM to be at all clique-related, standoff-ish or exclusive. I haven't been a member long at all and am great friends with a lot of mommies on the site, including the owner, members, and moderators alike! I love MM and have never felt so welcomed in my life, it's suddenly somewhere that I belong.

There are so many great events and so many like-minded mommies that I truly can't say enough about what a wonderful thing that is! I am never bored, lacking of converstaion or support and especially not lacking for events to attend all over the state!

The site owner/creator is an awesome, down-to-earth woman that goes to great lengths for the site and its members to ensure that everyone is happy and feels included! The only thing that a member of MM needs to do is be active! Talk, post and get to know your fellow MM members. Attend an event or two! Come hang out with us and you'll know in an instant that we're a happy, friendly and outgoing group that loves making new friends!

I have said this before and believe it with all of my heart after having "test-driven" some other "mommy-and-me" groups....Maryland Mommy is support for the mother you and and will grow to be and the woman that you have always been.

Marylandmommy.com can be very cliquely...be careful. If you arent a part of the original group, then forget it. I have found Baltimore Mommies to be very laid back and welcoming.

Marylandmommy.com can be a bit petty and full of mama drama. The admin. is a bit on "the bible thumping" side, so progressive mommas beware.

There's a new club in town! Come check out www.marylandmomsclub.com

We are a brand new moms group covering Maryland and all surrounding areas (DC, PA, VA, DE, etc.)

We already have tons of fun events, and lots of great information, and a wonderful group of very friendly moms already!

Come check us out!
