Ins-Momnia

I was struck by this: Thursday night, I last checked my email at 11:15 p.m. and went to bed. When I got up at 5:15 a.m. to work out, I checked again. And during that too-narrow window of sleep, I got a comment and an email from two blog readers.

This leaves me with two thoughts:

1) I should tell you that I'm the person responsible for approving your very welcome comments. So if you don't see yours appear right away (especially if it's at 2 a.m.), it's because I'm sleeping, driving someone to art class, cooking, reading and writing stories for the newspaper, giving baths, trying to locate someone's missing socks, telling a story about opossum detectives, explaining what "hypnosis" is, dancing to polkas in the living room, checking homework, looking for a misplaced permission slip, or bandaging a boo boo. Please be patient, and do check back.

2) Moms and dads definitely need more sleep, but it's hard to come by. How many hours a night are you getting?

I get between 6.5 and 7 hours a night. Looking at it in writing, it seems like a lot, given that when my children were babies I was lucky to get three hours at a stretch. I'm sure before I know it they'll be teenagers sleeping 'til noon on Saturdays.

- Annelies (mom to 4 year old and 2 year old)

That's true -- it does feel great to get past that baby stage. But my sense is that even after kids are sleeping 10-12 hours at a stretch, a lot of parents are up very late -- and early -- trying to fit in cleaning the house, exercise, etc. Curious to know if that's so.

That's why I turned off the "time" label on my site; too embarrassing when I was posting things at midnight.

Oh.....I hear you. I think on average, maybe 6 hours of sleep and often those 6 hours aren't restful. I cannot seem to 'turn it off'. Its way too little, but I do find it is plum amazing that we can keep on ticking with such few zzzzzz's. There is just enough time in the day, and honestly, I wouldn't mind so much, if I actually felt caught up, EVER.....

Not nearly enough. It's compounded by the fact that today, I am suffering from The Crud that is going around. It is almost 2AM, but there is no point in going to bed when I can't breathe. I;m sure I will regret it in the morning.

My sympathies -- I've got it too. Can't wait for February to be over...
