'Saturday Night Live' mocks Fox News coverage
It wasn't much of an election last Tuesday night, but the performance by Fox News was enough to earn a mock segment from NBC's "Saturday Night Live." What do you think of the satire targeting Greta Van Susteren and Glenn Beck? What about the sketch dovetailing with White House complaints about Fox?
Do you think enough folks saw election night coverage to get this? And here's my real question of the day: Do you think Tina Fey will step back onto the "SNL" stage in coming days to do the Sarah Palin book tour? That's one I will go out of my way to see.

Cleaning up 8 years of the mess that Bush left us....may...I don't know...take a little while to accomplish?? The Republicans lost across the board in the "REAL" elections for a reason. The youth showed up in force to vote to get rid of the hypocritical, corrupt, bible thumping Right Winger's. Your conservative views of religion and how it is forced upon the American public is as outdated as the "crusades". We have evolved as a people who continue to push for Race equality, woman's rights, separation of church and State, Gay and Lesbian rights. Views that your party seem to not only have no room to understand or support, but downright fight wholeheartedly fight against! Here's what sickens us.
You fight abortion..but give your babies up for adoption. You claim to be people of God..but are constantly getting caught doing "NON Christian" acts. Not allowing Gay's to marry...The divorce rate is at what 53%..how could that possibly change your life.. I forgot..in your small minded worlds..they will somehow..destroy the fabric of our Country. Please come back to 2009..Your living in the past with increasingly vocal rants of hate and lack of understanding. BTW I am a 37 DWM straight and not in politics..I have no agenda to speak of.

Sadly, the skit actually potrayed the Fox News people in a less extreme light then what the real life counterparts represent... I wish the Fox News people were as reasonable as what SNL portrayed... LMAO.

Hilarious, John. Oh, were you being serious? Sorry.

I would love to see Tina Fey do Sarah Palin's book tour on SNL.
The SNL skit was funny. The Michael Jackson reference was funny. The Glen Beck part was funny. It was a great, great night for a great, great nation. Pretty much captured him. I did not watch a whole lot about these races. Virginia and New Jersey were surprising outcomes. I'm sure it was pretty good timing since the problems that the WH has been having with the FOX channel lately.

Is SNL still relevant?
I think NBC is jealous of Fox News' ratings, which consistently beat the competition.

Not having cable, I don't watch Fox News so cannot comment on how good the satire was. I did think it was funny that they didn't let Joe Trippi get a word in. Jon Stewart's recent take down of Glen Back, however, seemed dead on with video clips I've watched of Beck's theatrics. The Fox News people come across in their clips as so very self-important. I hope Tina Fey does Palin again.

Good job SNL. I'm sure the gang at FNC will get a good laugh out of the skit. Shepard Smith is a big Obama supporter so I wonder why they included him? They probably don't watch enough FNC to know that.

The political skits are they only part of SNL worth watching.
Posted by: NotableM | November 8, 2009 4:36 PM
As far as i'm concerned, SNL hasn't been "culturally relevant" since William Shatner told a bunch of Trekkers to "Get a life! Move out of your parents' basements!!"

As a huge GB fan, I loved it! Jason Sudeikis is a comedian/actor of a kind I haven't seen since the days of Phil Hartman and Chris Farley. He has GB spoof dead on...The patriot hat, no, he should have donned the Russian hat from last year with OBAMA emblazoned across it! Great Job Jason, and get well Mad Man!
I thought his Beck takedown was the best part as well. far and away better than anything else. I think SNL has a winner with him taking apart Beck the way Fey took on Palin. Z

I watched the skit today on Huffpost (can't stay up that late anymore, ha!). Very clever, tho I agree with Glen that it portrays Faux news as being more reasonable than it really is.
Would love to see Tina Fey spoof Palin's conservative-towns-only book tour. Fey can probably just use verbatim Palinisms for the entire skit, as in the Katie Couric interview spoof. It s/b another classic!
Btw, Huffpost also has a hilarious SNL clip of Taylor Swift doing Kate on The View. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entertainment/

LOL @ Fox. They are not a serious news organization. Just another arm of the republican disfunction.

John clearly demonstrates that Republicans aren't the only one's capable of hate and hysteria. Then he ends his tirade, by saying he's "not in politics". No he just attacks people who think differently than he does. Kind of like Keith Olbermann

The folks at SNL don't like Fox News. As Captain Renault said about Rick's Cafe: "I'm shocked, shocked to find that gambling is going on in here! "

Isnt it just fun to poke fun at the craziness of television we talk about daily on this blog?
I thought the skits were funny. Beck kinda was butt of this joke.
Tina Fey resurrected as Sarah Palin....Lordie bee, I would love to see that.

This is SNL doing what it does best. For once, it was actually funny. An expanded version of its satires on Palin.
While it's funny, I don't agree that it goes easy on Fox. It does what most satire does - it emphasizes the extreme. Those who continue to call Fox "faux" and other such commentary, obviously don't watch it and can't defend that position. For example, they use Van Susterand and Shep Smith as being in the tank for the right. WRONG. Both are known liberals and Smith never shows the kind of partisan commentary attributed to him in the skit - though it was funny and in step with the satire. But it is SATIRE - not necessarily accurate. Van Susterand is even a Scientologist.
The Beck impersonation was spot on though. But he is not "news". The quick cuts on the Democrat spokesman were funny. All in all, well done for what it purports to be. Those who find "truth" in it or, worse, that it goes easy on Fox, are simply uninformed in my opinion. And hypocrites like John should just be ignored or re-directed to MSNBC for the "real" news.

P.S. - Z, do you plan to talk about the Mad Men finale? OT I know, but I'm curious.
Posted by: flint350 | November 9, 2009 9:19 AM
I don't watch SNL anymore because it hasn't been funny since days Farley & Co. No one was better than Carvey's George H.W. Bush. NBC has pushed this show recently ever since 2008 elections. Glen Beck and Greta were the only accuately portrayed personalities. Other than that Sheppard Smith, Greta, and Juan Williams are all big libs. As far as fox goes this is what happens when you are at the top everyone wants to take you down. I do find it amazing that the left finds it unconscionable that there is an opposing view point in the nation. Fox has just taken advantage by producing their opinion segments from the conservative viewpoint. If the lefties don't like it don't watch it! But at least it gives viewers a choice.

SNL itself is totally irrelvant. FOX news got higher than CNN, MSNBC and the other cable news outlets combined. SNL can ignore the politcal message of last Tuesday with a lame attack on FOX. It only focuses attention on how relevant FOX news is.
Posted by: john | November 9, 2009 11:36 AM
regarding the Fey/Palin question. It would be foolish to continue that. The media woul slobber all over it, but politically it would backfire. SNL doesn't have the guts to mock Obama giving shout outs to a non existent medal winners and ignoring a terrorist attack .

Z: I heard the average age of FNC watchers is 67. Is that true? How does that compare with other networks?
Hi, All I can tell you with any accuracy without doing further checking is that Fox News has the largest audience of 25-54 year old viewers, the key demographic in TV news. So the overall age wouldn't matter. What you are selling are is demographics, and if you have the largest number of viewers in the desired demo, you are the winner. What I'm saying: Even if they have more older viewers than anyone else, it doesn't matter, because they also have more target demo younger viewers as well. Fox just has more of evevrything except very young viewers. But there are not enough of them for cable news to make much difference in sales. Thanks.

Many of these blogs deal with Fox's supposedly unfair coverage. When will coverage be given to the ridiculous things said at CNN and MSNBC? For example, on Anderson Cooper 360 tonight, reporter Randi Kaye was "enlightening" us with statistics on how the red states have the most uninsured individuals. She actually asked, "How on earth will Republican senators be able to go home and tell their constituents they voted down the public option?" Even my husband -- who never weighs in on news programs -- said wow, way to slant the news. It's not just Fox -- it's everywhere, so I'd like to see a more "fair and balanced" discussion about ALL news programs.
Hi Arlo, Why don't you search Zurawik, Fox News and White House together on Google, and then write back and tell me what you find. Z

Watching SNL is as much fun as watching paint dry. Their sattire of Fox News only means they watch Fox and helps Fox's rating to loom over NBC's.

The skit was retarded. If your mother or sister had a physical irregularity, I suppose you'd be okay with people poking fun? SNL is no longer funny, just another political group willing to stop at nothing to get a laugh from the two people who watch the show. What is laughable is placing the blame for the economy on Bush. I guess Barney Frank and company's refusal to even speak of regulation had NOTHING to do with the fall of Freddy & Fanny. Libs really show their ignorance of the issues by never discussing things factually. Barney Frank is the single largest contributor to this economy failing, but where's his skit? Oh yeah...he's off limits because he's both GAY and a Flaming LIBERAL. Why does Fox news beat the other news shows? Oh wait...I meant to say all the other news shows COMBINED? Because perhaps they're relevant? Oh yeah. Oh Yeah.

Z,
I was quite surprised at how Taylor Swift fit in with the cast and displayed her acting talents. I guess I was expecting a blushing, bubbling teenager. She is a force to be reckoned with.
Not to mention the fact that she is definitely a "tall drink of water". Did you check out the size of those hooves during the pajama skit? Two thumbs up for not taking herself seriously. Plus, it was the first monologue in a long time where I didn't hit FF on Tivo.
