Oprah Winfrey ending show in 2011, moving to cable
"The Oprah Winfrey Show," one of the most successful franchises in TV history, will come to an end in September 2011, as the former Baltimore talk show host commits her energies to launching a cable channel with Maryland-based Discovery Communications.
Winfrey, who got her talk show start at WJZ in Baltimore TV, will make the announcement on her show Friday, according to WABC, the ABC-owned New York station that carries the show in the nation's largest TV market.
The syndicated program, which debuted in 1986, has been a gold mine for the owned and affiliated stations that use it as a lead-in to their early evening newcasts. The program airs here on WBAL (Channel 11), the Hearst-owned NBC affiliate.
Ending in 2011, will give Winfrey's landmark show a run of 25 years. It is the most lucrative and highest-rated show in syndication.
Winfrey, 55, is ending the show so that she can devote more of her time to the start of her own cable channel, OWN (The Oprah Winfrey Network), which will be a 50-50 partnership between her and the Maryland-based Discovery Communications.
OWN was scheduled to start at the end of this year, but the date has been changed several times, and 2009 no longer seems likely. Winfrey reportedly told staffers at Harpo Productions that she will not do a talk show on OWN. But she could be saying that so as not to be seen as "competing" in any way with "The Oprah Winfrey Show," which has contracts it must obligate through Sept. 9, 2011.
Winfrey was one of the founding partners in the Oxygen cable in 1998, but she said the channel did not reflect her voice and she eventually ended her relationship.
One of the most interesting stories will be the way Oprah's move in 2011 re-aligns early evening news ratings in cities form coast to coast.

Good Riddance. She brought us the likes of Doctor Phil and her bias. I'd rather have a root canal than sit around and watch her for an hour.

Interesting. So that means she is partnering up with someone related to TLC, huh?
I think Oprah has had a wonderful rags/riches story and she has worked her tail off to get where she is today.
I have enjoyed her show over the years and wish her the best.
I am not too thrilled though seeing who she may be partnering with. Maybe it will be a short lived relationship like Oxygen.
Never a dull moment in the world of T.V. now is there?

Hi Z,
You know, I used to watch Oprah and I liked her. But, I haven't seen her show in years, except for a little at the end of Sarah Palin's interview.
I don't like the idea of Oprah partnering up with Discovery. So, I won't be watching because I have a vendetta with TLC. Sorry Oprah. haha

I like Oprah. I used to watch all the time and then it didn't seem to fit into my schedule. I remember the Oxygen channel. I think that through the years Oprah has had on some very interesting guests and she did some good interviews. Never will forget when Tom Cruise jumped on her couch. Anyway, I think she will continue to be successful. Having her own cable channel will be good for her. What will happen to Harpo productions. I do wonder how all of this will affect the local stations. I always felt she did try to give back to community. The Color Purple was a good movie. She has been on of the persons who have definitely influenced television.

Aha - now everything is starting to make sense.
T:LC is grooming kate to take oprah's place.....;) (sorry, just had to say it).....

Again?
I hope this isn't some kind of yo-yo retiring syndrome.

I admire Oprah, but wish her OWN partnership had been with almost any network other than Discovery (home of The Lying Channel). Am cringing a little thinking of the cross promotions.

When Oprah's show first aired, I recorded and watched after work religiously along with all the soaps that came on before her show: Ryan's Hope, All My Children, One Life to Live, General Hospital etc. Then one year I gave up my soaps and Oprah for Lent. And that was it, I never looked back. No more Soap Operas and no more Oprah addiction. That was over 15 years ago. And from what I hear, I haven't missed much. Sure I would catch a show every now and again, and I can appreciate her success, but something about her views and some of the people and ideas she promoted became too weird for me. Bottom line, I won't miss her show and I know lots of folks who feel the same way. She had a long run and made alot of money. Time to move on.
Brainstorm, I should have given up TLC for Lent.

Remember when I sent you that link so many months ago, Z?
I don't know if Oprah will help raise the Discovery channel's standards, or if Discovery will drag Oprah down to their recent level of drivel.
Don't think I'll be watching. All of the Discovery channels have been leaving a bad taste in my mouth for the last year or two.

She really is ending the show in 2011. Bye Oprah in another season or so. I did watch (on dvr of course since I have a job) some of the shows.

I could not agree with you more, Kelly. I have anticipated this day for a long time. There IS a God!

Can't wait for the year-long going away "tour." Who are the unthinking women of America going to turn to after Oprah leaves to tell them which books to read, which medical advice to follow, and which porn movies to watch in the bedroom?

Okay, I must be the only one who likes Oprah and thinks she has influenced television for the better. I am going to give her a chance even if it is partnership with Discovery Channel. Seems to me she has had some good programming through the years. What about her coverage of our first Black American Presidential candidate.
Posted by: Sherry T. | November 20, 2009 7:26 AM
brstevens,
My guess is it will be Sarah Palin.

Square Off could still be in production after The Oprah Winfrey Show goes off the air.

I stopped watching Oprah some time ago. Won't miss her. Actually, I'm tired of the screaming that seems to be de rigeur on daytime TV and am willing to tolerate less and less of it. Listening to downloaded audio books is free and a pleasant alternative.

Not a surprising announcement. It's all related----TLC, Dr. Phil, Dr. Oz, etc. I haven't watched Oprah in years. She should just go quietly into the sunset. Women are smarter these days. Why watch this junk when you have access to the internet?

I see there are a lot of HATERS!!! out there. Good Luck Oprah.
Posted by: Haters | November 20, 2009 9:19 AM
I used to like Oprah as well, but I can't stand the way she gushes over "celebrities." Honestly, they're only people, not God! I've never understood the hysteria that surrounds actors/actresses/reality "stars" and I really don't have any respect for the gushers and enablers, which I think Oprah has become.

I guess Oprah's cable channel OWN will be a part of the HARPO productions. I think it will be a good thing. I really don't think that affiliation with Discovery Channel will affect the good television that Oprah has brought through the years. I just wondered what would happen to HARPO production company.
Oprah, I may be in the minority, but GOOD LUCK.
Posted by: Sherry T. | November 20, 2009 9:53 AM
It could be good for Oprah that Discovery Communications owns TLC. That hopefully would mean that the decisions that are made would be Discovery Communications and not TLC's. And with Oprah having her OWN channel in combination with her HARPO production then one would hope that TLC would have little if any input. That is a good thing. I just figured out who is who in all of this. :)

Thank God! another Blow-Hard bites the dust.

I haven't watched her in YEARS, every since she started showing her liberal bias. She just oohed and aahed all over obama (i saw clips for it, didn't watch), yet would not interview Palin.
She force feeds all her new age garbage onto her sheeple.
I am glad to see her go. She can take Dr. Phil with her. He is another sorry excuse for a show.

Maybe Oprah and Kate will hook up for a show....that's a scary thought and I am slapping myself for even bringing it up.

@ Haters 9:19 AM,
So, in your universe, everyone who isn't in lockstep with Oprah is a hater? Isn't that narrow minded? Aren't we entitled to our own opinions and views without being labled? Don't love Oprah, don't hate Oprah. Her views are not my views. I'm free not to watch and free to have an opinion.

I guess meeting Palin rubbed off on her.

From a programming standpoint, I remember when WMAR-TV 2 first picked up Oprah in 1986. Ch.2 aired her after Donahue at 10am. A year or two later, they moved Oprah to 4pm. That was a smart move. What wasn't smart was ABC2 letting Oprah go in 1995 in favor of Montel Williams and later Rosie O' Donnell. This move allowed WBAL-TV 11 to pick up Oprah that fall. Rosie lasted only 6 years, while Oprah remains on TV, at least until 2011, to big ratings success. As a result, Ch.11's 5pm news ratings have gone up and stayed there, while ABC2's ratings continue to tank. Oprah will be missed on Ch.11, but this may be welcome news for the other stations in town come Fall of 2011.

While I was a big fan of Oprah for years, I can't watch anymore. It started with the book author fiascos and ended last season.
Kate was on Oprah via satellite discussing Octomom. While O was saying how Octomom was unemployed, receiving medicaid, getting free fertility treatments, searching out media ops, etc.; she was comparing Kate and Octo but didn't seem to know that Octomom was doing EXACTLY what Kate had done. Kate kept saying "really", "Oh my Goodness" and "Wow".
It was ridiculous. I'm very wary of all the talking heads on TV now.

Why would anyone be surprised? Any show with a long run reaches the point where there is simply nothing left to mine (or mind).
Posted by: ruth | November 20, 2009 1:51 PM
Good point anonymous. There are a lot of show out there. The View is another one. I kind of like it. Don't love it, don't hate it. But I do have an opinion.
Posted by: Sherry T. | November 20, 2009 2:13 PM
Karen that is a funny thought, but Kate G would never fit in a pair of Oprah High heels.
Oprah doesn't have to use earpieces like Kate does.

I wish her the best in her adventures and may God Bless...

I cannot imagine daytime TV without Oprah. What a void.
I admire her a lot. She's done so much good in the world. I believe she really does want everyone to live their best lives. And I read some terrific books that I otherwise would not have been on my radar.
While I have a problem with TLC, the rest of the Discovery channels are top notch. So. I'll watch.
Hopefully, I'll have cable by then!

I've never been an Oprah fan. But, I won't dispute what she has made out of her life.
What I don't admire her for is how she has joined the ever-growing list of self-important people in the public eye. She has millions of women who hang on her every word, won't read a book unless its on Oprah's list or watch movies or tv shows, or even vote for someone that Oprah recommends.
Now, I realize this is not HER fault that less thinking women (and men) can't decide for themselves, but she seems to thrive on that stuff. People in her position can let it go to their heads or remain neutral in their public opinions and enourage others to decide for themselves.
She really went over my radar when she jumped into the presidential election circus. I always thought she might have been promised a position in the administration or at least hoped for one.
One of the things I don't like about Oprah is how she will chit chat to people on her show or interviews, etc and sound like an intellectual woman. Then, there are times, when she will become "black" and her entire language changes to go along with the person or place that she is with. Why is she "two" people? Why doesn't she remain who she (supposedly) is and encourage the other person to sound more intelligent? This isn't a good trait, but I think its what brings more people to her.
To me, she is a phony. But, a phony who has built herself into the empire that she has become, without stepping on everyone else in the process. And, she does share with others.
So, for that, I wish her good luck.

If we all chip in a dollar, can we rent a forklift to get her off the tube TODAY?
Posted by: Mike | November 21, 2009 3:15 PM
Iam glad her show is coming to an end..the past few years some of the shows were getting a "Jerry Springer" flavor to it....
Posted by: bob | November 21, 2009 9:27 PM
Bob, I do not agree that she was getting a Jerry Springer flavor.
Jerry Springer was on Reliable sources on CNN this past Sunday morning. He gave credit where credit was due and made sure he expressed Oprahs show was completely different than his. He really made fun of his own show.
