C-SPAN shines on this historic weekend in House

If you care at all about the future of health care in this country, please turn on C-SPAN today and watch the live debate in the House. It's historic, informative and passionate.

By 11 p.m., the Republicans had raised so many points of order that all conversation basically ground to a halt. Michigan Democrat John Dingell, who held the chair, brought his gavel down repeatedly. You did not need to understand the ins and outs of Parliamentary Procedure to appreciate the battle that was playing out on the floor of the House.

All hail C-SPAN. I went to bed Friday night with the sounds of a late-night debate in the House Rules Committee coming from my bedside radio tuned to WCSP (90.1 FM), and awoke at 7 a.m. to C-SPAN's "Washington Journal" skillfully raising the curtain on the live and historic debate taking place in the House Saturday.

Please spend some time this weekend with C-SPAN. These public service cable channels and their radio sister station really are a national treasure.

If you want the kind of information it takes to be a truly informed citizen as this country goes through epic change, you need to make C-SPAN part of your core media diet. These are tumultuous times of monumental change, and much of the rest of the media has never been more polarized and ideologically contaminated.

UPDATE: The bill passed late Saturday night, and at 7 a.m. Sunday, C-SPAN was still on the case with a "Washington Journal" full of in-depth analysis of the historic vote and what it means to us.

I watched some of the 1 minute statements this morning on the House floor on cspan.

Differing views to say the least.

I went to my representatives website and started to read the 1900 page bill. I wonder if the people who are voting on the bill read it.

I am an American who is caught in the middle. I left a job with great medical insurance this year TO take a job I love and am passsionate about that offers no medical insurance. I thought since I had previous coverage I would just purchase an individual policy. That was in June of 2009. I applied at 3 major Mississippi companies and NONE will cover me. Well, I should not say that...none have approved me. They want this paperwork, that paperwork, so much so that I just gave up. I want to purchase my own insurance. I want to pay it myself. I have no real medical problems to speak of. Under the status quo the health care companies get all the rights.

I just want the playing field fair. I just do not think that bill that is on the floor now will cut the mustard. This country is broke, the people who are trying to pass legislation have good medical insurance and I think we are rushing this....and will regret it if it even can pass.

I turn on C-SPAN every so often. It really is very good because of the debate and points of view that is offers. It is really the only place to turn for that.

I have heard several debates about eliminating pro and cons of co-pays for seniors and also debate on the sanctity of life issues. Also, small business. This one worries me because healthcare costs are rising faster than wages and small business is struggling. We need the small businesses for the economy to flourish.

Also, the 10% unemployment rate and the just over 12 trilion dollar deficit. You can hear debate on all of these issues on C-SPAN. I need to read the whole bill. Just have to find time to do it.

Irene, great comments and I agree. I can't watch as I don't have cable.

I was laid off in July and have been uninsured as I can't afford even subsidized Cobra.

The health care system is so broken and I'm afraid a rush to pass something means more meaningful changes won't ever happen.

I still haven't read the whole thing. Anyone know of a decent website that breaks it down? Something that doesn't just cater to one particular political perspective?

sparklycig,

You might read through this link. It has some breakdown of the healthcare plan.

All of us have issues with the economy in the shape it is in right now. We don't have any dental insurance and COBRA is really too expensive for most people to afford. Understand your dilemma. I hope things get better for you.

Does anyone know where to find the whole healthcare bill online. I can find some of it under these HR 3200, etc. Is the whole bill online somewhere? I really would like to read the whole bill. It seems to be hard to find.

Good luck on Reliable Sources Z.

They are going to vote on the healthcare bill tonight and CNN is covering that too. C-SPAN too, so I am switching back and forth between the two channels.

Z,

I caught a few moments of the debate and wished I had more time to watch. I love C-Span as there aren't any commentators and you have the ability to listen and decide for yourself what is being stated and make up your own mind. This has been such a huge issue in our country, for those ( like my family) who have a special needs child and have "good" health insurance and are still spending 10,000.00 per year out of pocket on health care. I fight with our health care provider constantly to get benefits for our child and it has taken 6 months for a decision and usually the decision is we will pay 40% and you pay the rest. We have reached our breaking point with insurance and I would love nothing more than having better choices available for our son. C-Span allows me to see and hear the representatives and senators points of view I just wish they walked in out shoes on a daily basis and truly had an understanding of what some americans have to contend with on a daily basis. C-Span is the best non-biased news that comes out of Washington and I love the fact that they have the call-in portion to voice our opinions. C-Span was the biggest concern for our government and now it's become the other news channels that have taken over the debate and C-Span got lost in the shuffle. Thank you for putting this on your blog to remind people of C-Span and all it does offer.

I saw it pass the House on C-SPAN last night, but only by a small margin (5 votes)? It was fun to watch. Nancy Pelosi said they still have further to go. I think it will get more opposition in the Senate. I am glad in one sense that something finally got resolved. I am not sure what this means yet?

Whew, I finally found some stuff.

Here is some useful analysis of the big points.

Here is some actual text.

I had a bit of a brain seizure looking at the text so I may need some alcohol before I get started on it!.

Hi sparklycig,

Thanks for the links. I am trying in my spare time (what is that?) to read through the 1900+ healthcare bill a little at a time. I think you are right I need to take a double dose of Tegretol before taking all of it on. If you get cable or have a radio C-SPAN is a great place to turn. Thanks again.

Hi Sherry T

Glad you find them useful. I don't have cable, but I do happen to have way too much spare time so hopefully I can make a dent in this. So far it's pretty ugly!
