Michael Jackson's death sparks TV discussion of race

aaIf you think there has been too much Michael Jackson on TV, wait until the funeral. Or, how about Matt Lauer and NBC's Today show getting inside Neverland for a Thursday morning tour? And then, Larry King offering the TV tour of Jackson's ranch in prime time at 9 p.m. Thursday. Matt Lauer, Larry King and Neverland -- isn't American TV fabulous?

But for my part, so far, I really do not think the coverage has been excessive. I am pleased, in fact, to see TV serving so effectively as a medium for the ritual of public mourning. (Not bad for a so-called dinosaur, is it?). Furthermore, TV is providing the forum for an illuminating discussion of race in connection with the dead entertainer -- and I think that matters in an important cultural way.

The latest entry on that front came Tuesday night with Katie Couric interviewing filmmaker Spike Lee for a CBS special on Jackson. The program, which aired under the 48 Hours banner, won the time period with 8.15 million viewers -- one of the largest audiences of the year for 48 Hours. (Pictured Spike Lee at a Michael Jackson tribute. AP)

Lee and Couric focused on the controversial words Jamie Foxx used to open the BET Awards Show Sunday night. I wrote about them in my Sunday post as well, arguing that they instantly contextualized the BET program in part as a discussion of race.

"We want to celebrate this black man -- this black man. He belongs to us. We just shared him with everybody else," Foxx said at the start of the awards telecast.

"Black folks have become very territorial about Michael," Lee said when asked about those remarks. "It's a bad time to badmouth Michael around some black folks. Because, you know, we had issues with him, but that stuff is over now.... Let's make no mistake, Michael never forgot who he was and where he came from in the history of African Americans."

And now, comes word from the Pew Research Center that black viewers are following the Jackson story much more closely than whites. Some 80 percent of blacks say they are tracking coverage closely, while only 22 percent of whites said they were following the coverage intensely. A new TV divide.

Jackson has lessons to teach us about race even in death.

!!!!!

That's astonishing. I feel like I can't turn on the television without being bombarded with the latest details of this whole hot mess.

ashleyy: well i think that michael belongs to us black folk because he had a skin disease so he had to bleach his skin...that doesnt make him white!! gosh no racism or nothing im jus saying...()well miss yu michael..rip..*tear!*()
-dnt stop till ya get enuff!!-

morgan:
well excuseme white ppl but yall need to stop thinking that mr mj is white...get it straight dang!!

My jaw dropped when Foxx stated that Michael belongs to the black man. After all michael has done to make himself unrecognizable as far as race is concerned, I think the claim ended up as an insult to the meaning of who Michael was. (Michael represented the world) I think that statement just shows he doesnt get it. I dont beleive Foxx was trying to start something but he should have been told to beat it. Honored with the gift of being in the public eye, celebraties should have a responsability to think before they speak.

Paul that is exactly how I felt, why must people force this segregation upon the world, why can't people just see him as a treasure of the human race.

Michael Jackson's music will be what he will be remembered for throughout the world. It is okay for people to be proud of their heritage. I don't think Michael Jackson would have wanted his death to be a race issue. He has crossed the greatest divide - into death, which we will all have to face, I don't want to think of this as a race issue. RIP Michael.

What was with Matt Lauer taking us through an empty Neverland and telling us where all the furniture and pictures used to be. I didn't get much out of that.

Is there going to be a memorial for Farrah Fawcett on TV?

MJ was one of the greatest showmans ever and he broke significant racial barriers in our culture. No doubt.

He was also a pedophile. The facts don't lie. And, it's a fact that he gave a teenager alcohol during one of his creepy "sleepovers" at Neverland.

Just like Chris Benoit, he was extremely talented, but he was monster. He lived in hell for the past 10 years as an anorexic drug addict.

The autopsy says it all. He was guilty. He knew it, and he tortured himself for the last 10 years of his life. After reading the autopsy reports, I felt a little better knowing he got his in the end. I celebrate his death knowing no more children will be in harms way.

I got question for all the folks celebrating his life. Would you have left your children alone with him?

I really didn't like it when Foxx said that. It sounded racist if you ask me. Michael belonged to everyone. The world loved him. by the way, I am half back. RIP Michael Jackson.

MERCY! MERCY! MR. Ballz Mahoney aka 'Balls Baloney': all I can say after reading your petty diatribe/ hatchet-job on the late/ great Michael Joseph Jackson (May he RIP) is there goes a very disturbed and bitter man. Might you happen to recall the time-honored, wise old Biblical entreaty, "Judge NOT, lest YE be judged."? Wow! sounds like you must have been a veritable fly-on-the-wall at MJ's Neverland Ranch and had a first-hand observe of all the alleged deviant shenanigans that were going on in Michael Jackson's bedroom on those "creepy sleepovers"? (Your words, not mine.) Like legions of quick-to-judge folk out there who basically pre-tried and 'lynched' MJ, having made up their pea-brained, paranoid, prejudicial minds of his 100% guilt years prior to this (innocent-until-proven-guilty) human being, even before he had appeared in front of a jury of his peers, I can almost palpably sense the sheer pleasure and relishing in your self-righteous admission that you "felt a little better knowing he got his in the end." Really, only Michael Jackson and his Maker know the ultimate TRUTH in this whole alleged pedophilia affair, but may I remind you oh-Ballzy-one that MJ's peers, did indeed, find him completely innocent on all counts in the June, 2007 so-called "Trial of the Century". (How soon we DO forget!) Mr.'Baloney', conflating the tragic murder-suicide of troubled Canadian pro wrestler, Chris Benoit (and his innocent wife and child), or even his admitted long-term steroid abuse w/ the litany of travails endured by MJ in his last tortured, sad years, (referring to him as a "monster" and "an anorexic drug addict") is both ludicrous and pointless. Man, they're from two different universes, dude. Mr. 'Baloney', you just exude compassion. I truly feel the Love..... NOT! Perhaps a little anger-management, or sensitivity-training just might alter your wacked-out perspective toward the late "King of Pop" and temper some of that seething bitterness and conjecture you take delight in spewing. I'm curious, were you as quick to judge "The King", Elvis, when allegations of him having sexual relations w/ numerous under-age girls surfaced in the popular press early in his career? (No big "Trial of the Century" there.) Or did you just give the young, charismatic, hip-swivelling Lothario from Tupelo, Miss. a pass on those alleged 'minor' transgressions? ( I admit that may have been a bit of a cheap shot, since you are likely too young to have even been alive in Elvis's era, yet if you were, I'm pretty certain you would have let him slide.) Mr. 'Baloney', I confess I may be judging you, but I believe many would concur w/ me that you had it coming..... oh ye of little faith. Frankly, I'm not so much judging the messenger (I'm sure your Mom loves you dearly), as much as the hateful, distorted message.

Happy 4th! (Don't blow a gasket, now)

P.S.: So "the autopsy says it all", does it, forensic detective Ballz Mahoney? Hmmmm....... I do believe we have between 4-6 weeks until the MJ official toxicology report is released... unless you have 'the inside-dope' (Oops, poor choice of words there) and know the definitive results already? Do share. Inquiring minds would like to know.... Mr. 'All-knowing ONE.'

Yes, yes, yes, I would have left my children alone with Micheal Jackson. I had a tramatic childhood an for a while was particularly sensitive to childrens suffering micheal was as normal as his situation allowed him to be. Micheal was not street smart how could he be he was sheltered since the age of 5 years old. I do not know what facts you are speaking of that alcohal story was a lie in adittion to many and that is a fact. Micheal did have alcahol in his home but he did not give it to any child. Get your so called facts straight those people were crooks and there was a conspiracy to take the king of pop down the same as the rest of the famous black icons that is how whitie controll them it has gone on throughout history. Micheal however did think he deserved some kind of respect from white America but they showd him he was just another nigga and took his money like they do African Americans all over the world and then sit back and laugh.

I just finished reading all but one of Maureen Orth's previous stories that were published in "Vanity Fair," and which are available on the magazine's website. The picture of Michael Jackson that emerges is that of a man who was disfigured internally as well as externally. Yes, he was a musical genius, but the avalanche of media coverage should, if it wants to be responsible (which I don't believe it does), not ignore the wealth of evidence about his activities with prepubscent boys. I'm guessing that his family is engaged in creating their own version of Camelot, and that the media will avidly go along with it.

Oh for crying out loud! Michael didn't want to be black otherwise the bleaching would never had occure. I, over the year during his metmorphisis, heard as many people say that Michael Jackson wanted to be something that he could never really be - white. Of course, one of Hollywood's resident rascist, Spike Lee, would make that kind of comment. For all of Michael Jackson's genuis as a performer, he was a sad man with no self-esteem otherwise he would have died years from now somewhat darker, prbably less drugged, and less of aphysical freak.

The people all over the television screen weeping have nausiated me beyond belief. All Michael Jackson did in this world was to give us some memorable music/songs and nothing. Those people weeping should have been weeping for the loss of lives in the Sudan, the loss of live in the wildlife, the loss of lives that occur everyday on the streets of Baltimore from violence, hunger, drug addiction, etc.

Jackson paid out 20 million to his first accuser. If that's not an admission of guilt I don't know what is.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out a guy weighing only 112 at 6 ft tall, with a pharmacy bill of over $100,000 dollars, and the powerful sedative Dipro found at his house would indicate that he lived his final days as an anorexic drug addict. Dipro is supposed to only be used in surgeries not be a person's medicine cabinet.

To me, Jackson's passing means he's millions can no longer be used to scar children for life.

Here are the preliminary autopsy reports. A disclaimer. It is a British tabloid. However, don't forget that TMZ, an American tabloid, was first to break his death.

http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/2505693/The-shock-findings-of-the-Michael-Jackson-autopsy.html

My niece said it best when she was four years old, when she became aware of all the surgery Michael had. "He must not like himself very much on the inside to change himself so much on the outside."

I think all people can claim a right to love Michael's music, but why did he chose white wives and white surrogate mothers for his children?

I wonder why everyone now consider only drugs misuse as the main reason of Michael Jackson's sudden death!?!? There were plenty of events contributed to his poor health that happened quite before the recent times. Here I've tried to list all of them:

http://www.myhowtoos.com/en/red-hot/85-what-really-killed-michael-jackson-full-list

FIRST OF ALL I THINK MJ FAN BASE IS BASICALLY A BUNCH OF IDIOTS.

I find it rather ironic that Michael Jackson's race is even an issue. He was born black and died LOOKING white. However, I don't ever recall Michael himself stating his race as an issue. He has said plenty of times that he is African American and that was only after askd what he considered himself to be. He was more concerned with being a part of the HUMAN race, though. Look at the songs HE wrote, "Black or White, Heal The World." Did he have vitiligo? Who knows...more importantly, WHO CARES?? He wanted people of all races to live together and love each other. I was raised to not see color, but to see people so I know where Michael was coming from. For the comment, "why did he choose white wives..." did it occur to you that maybe he was attracted to them, not because they were white, but because they were good women? So a white person dating or marrying a person outside of their race is trying to be something other than white? Wow, that's news to me. I am more than happy being white but I am attracted to any good man, even a purple one if he would love me and support his family.
Now, for the child molestation charges. Was he guilty back in '93? Who knows, they settled out of court. Here's something to think about though...if your child was molested by a person would 20 million dollars make that go away? Absolutely not! We would have been in court for CRIMINAL charges, but it's all about that mighty dollar huh? Then 10 years later, why would a parent let their child spend the night alone with this man if they truly believed he was a "monster?" Then Michael had his day in court, and was found NOT GUILTY! I don't know, maybe it's me but I think people are missing the BIG picture. I did not approve of Jamie Foxx saying what he said. Michael Jackson did not BELONG to black people just like he did not BELONG to white people. He BELONGS to God and that's who has him now and may he Rest In Peace. The WORLD will miss you MJ!!!

Mr. Foxx didn't pull the racist card with that expression that Michael Jackson belonged to African American. Jamie Foxx just wanted the world to know that a black man, just like Obama, was able to rise above the misconception of African-American males. Yes, Michael Jackson was African-American who had demons just like any other people who is afraid to let anyone deeply know what's wrong with him. As a psychological major, I feel music, his mother and his children was the only thing that kept him close to the realm of the "real world." Michael Jackson was not a self proclaimed King of Pop... The world proclaimed him that term and with that, he kept the music coming. Every decade got the type music that was desired from "ABC's" to "Butterflies". Michael Jackson might have had probelms that the world could see the outer turmoil of them but Michael Jackson never failed giving the world a show when it was time to give one. Michael Jackson is a man who someone can always remember as 'He was one hell of an entertainer.' Even the congressman who talked so negatively about Michael couldn't deny that he was not an excellent entertainer. To Michael Jackson, you will be forever missed. May God forgive you for all your sins and that you have eternal life among us all. God Bless.

Funny, I always thought of Michael Jaxkson as just Michael Jackson. Yes Iknow that MJ was born "black" and gradually became "white". The only thing that reminded me of his genectic heritage (actually, we're all afican decendents) was when the media would show the progression of his rhinoplasty outside of that he was just the incredible performer that he was. Typical of some black people, they want to make much ado about race. Hey The Truth & Faust get a grip. Racial issue will only continue as long as there are people like you anf Jesse & Sharpton lowering the bar on progress,

JB

I find it amazing that...
