Ratings, raves for Dave (and Paul)--bad news Conan
The raves were instantaneous for David Letterman's Wednesday night show with Paul McCartney, and now comes the very good ratings news: 4.4 million viewers tuned in to see the former Beatle return to the stage where he made his American debut 45 years ago. Only 2.5 million watched Conan O'Brien on NBC.
That continues a roll for a resurgent Letterman, and a troubling downward slide for NBC's Tonight Show since Conan O'Brien took over from Jay Leno. If the executives at NBC responsible for the latenight change weren't sweating before, they should be now after seeing McCartney and Letterman create one of the most exciting TV events of the summer on Wednesday.
And to make matters worst for NBC, ABC's Nightline has also re-established itself as a mandatory stop on days when there is compelling news.
Last week's ratings offer a neat snapshot of what is now happening in latenight.
Nightline, driven in part by the Michael Jackson memorial and general media madness surrounding the performer's death, drew 3.8 million viewers, while Letterman finished close behind at 3.7 million. The Tonight show drew 2.8 million.
Last year at this time, Jay Leno was dominating latenight an averaging 4.6 million viewers a night.
In fairness, O'Brien is winning with young viewers, buit he is losing far too many of Leno's older, stalwart fans. As sudden as it has been, I think NBC might soon discover that its journey from first to worst in the latenight ratings is now permanent.
I have to say, I've received a lot of comments here on previous latenight posts, and there has not been a lot of support for O'Brien or the move by NBC.

I liked Conan when he followed Jay, but he doesn't have what it takes to go up against Letterman. Looks like Letterman is finally king of late night and NBC's mistake of replacing Johnny Carson with Jay (againnst even Johnny's wishes) has come full circle to bite NBC like a patient rattle snake.

I just want to throw some support behind Conan. I never was a religious viewer of the Leno show, but I never miss a night now with Conan. I know he has a more specific type of humor, but he is so different from the run of the mill hosts out there, I think he's doing great.

I've always been a huge Leno fan (after Carson, of course). I liked Conan, but felt he worked best in the late night slot (2nd). NBC made a horrific mistake letting Leno go (even with the 10 PM show) for Conan, taking over the 11:30 Tonight Show slot. This will be viewed as one of the greatest broadcast mistakes of all time. I watched Leno's show (via DVR, so it only took 20-25 minutes) every night. I don't watch it anymore. Period. I'm not alone... I'm in my early 50's. The couple of Conan shows I saw were embarassing, and centered around Conan - that's a trap that Jay never fell into - just like Johnny.

As one of Conan's biggest fans, I have to throw my support to him. The man is so much funnier than David Letterman, who has become senile and mean-spirited over the last few years. Although he is winning the late-night wars, he also gives off a vibe that he doesn't care about this job, which leads me to feel bad for Conan even more, since he's dedicated to hosting the Tonight SHow. I do believe he will win back viewers, although I don't think he'll ever win in the ratings ever again. Of course, losing in the ratings didn't prevent David Letterman from having a long, illustrious career in the field.

I'm a HUGE fan of Conan and I watch every night. Conan has a very specific type of humor that does not speak to Leno's former audience which are composed mostly of old people and uptight women from Nebraska.
If you don't like Conan then you should get to work on your AARP application.

Conan is exponentially more funny than Jay, which is why he probably won't be as successful. Leno had a wrap on those who don't like to do any thinking whatsoever, the old and the unintelligent. Conan's humor is, largely, for the young and the reasonably well educated. Letterman's was too, many years ago, though he has been stuck in the same shtick since before moving to CBS. People are turning to Letterman because he's a known quantity. Don't count Conan out though, people thought the same of Letterman (humor too strange, only works with the youth), when he was just starting out.

David Letterman is doing what he has been doing so well since the early 1980's. He has often come across as smug, miserable, and nasty. That's his thing. That's what he does. And he does it brilliantly. Although a personal opinion, I've always thought Dave was generally funnier to watch than Jay Leno. That's not to say Jay isn't a funny comedian, but until the final few months of his Tonight Show run, he hardly ever treaded the line. He was always safe, and in my opinion boring.
Someone once said, "People watch the Tonight Show for the guests. (reffering to Leno) People watch the Letterman show to see what Dave is going to say."
I think that also applies to Conan. He kind of IS the show. He's entertaining, self depricating, and extremley smart. What NBC has done however, is almost completley taken away that freedom from him and his staff. I've noticed, and excpected a change in his interview style. On Late Night, most interviews flowed according to Conan, but on the Tonight Show, it seems as if the host is subjected to ask the questions on the blue cards, and not deviate too far from them. I only hope that this ratings game that NBC seems to constantly loose these days will force the exec's hands to give Conan some more freedom to give his style some more room to flourish on the Tonight Show.

Conan's humor is for college kids staying up late after 12:35 am, who are smoking pot, its not for general America, he is a disaster on the Tonight Show.. Conan is a mean little person with a huge ego, he is a nasty looking red head who cakes on a ton of makeup and is now fraudulently towing the political correct pro obama line to keep in favor, he wants the tonight show to be all about him, we all know he has a small tiny lil red button for a penis, the dreaded Irish Curse and that's why that red head is all Fu**ed in the head...
Because of his bitching and moaning Conan forced the hand of NBC executives to dump Leno.. what a pitiful mistake, we all saw it coming. Andy Richter would make a better host than Conan but both these shit heads don't belong on the Tonight Show

Was never impressed with Conan; always seemed too juvenile. Dave's been phoning it in for a decade; the night with Paul McCartney was, as others have noted, saved by McCartney. Dave's attempts that night at subtle humor (I give him a little more credit than other posters) were weak at best (and obviously, missed widely at worst). Kimmel and Fallon are also-rans. The best gig in late night TV right now belongs to Craig Ferguson. Last night's "tribute" to Apollo 11 -- a wacky, puppet-filled take on the old kiddie TV theme "Fireball XL-5" -- was the funniest thing on TV since Craig did a similar trick with They Might Be Giants' "Istanbul (not Constantinople)" about two months ago.

I miss Leno, big time.
I have, and will continue, to watch ANYTHING other than the pasty faced red head or the gap toothed idiot.

VollballGod, you sound like a mean little person yourself. A mean, stupid little child.

Face it, O'brien is a narcisistic twit with a marsh mellow intellect/complexion endlessly chanting "please like me... please like me..." I imagine his biggest fans like him most because he's even more pathetic than they are. Letterman has become a disinterested/disinteresting dried up liberal prune with constipation anxiety waiting to dump on anything conservative. The only late night host with an ounce of genuine wit is Ferguson.

I miss Leno too.
Letterman's stammering makes him unwatchable. Anyone else notice it?
Ferguson is the best.

When Conan took the reigns from Letterman of the Late Night Show on NBC back in the early 90’s, it was considered a disaster. The NBC execs stuck with him, and he became the clear leader in the time slot. I could easily see this happening once again. Especially since Conan appeals to a much younger generation, the future looks bright.
Not to mention Letterman/Leno enthusiasts will eventually be entering nursing homes and loosing the ability to use their remote controls. Conan is clearly the most intelligent and creative talk show host on TV. I will say I have been some what disappointed with the quality of guests on Conan. Hopefully with better guests, the ratings will improve.
Hello bigben12: I have to say that I have not heard the nursing-home hypothesis yet as to why Conan's future holds promise. Thanks.Z
