Controversy over Letterman's Palin jokes mounts

It looks as if the controversy surrounding comedian David Letterman's crude jokes about Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's daughters is not going away any time soon.

A new website, firedavidletterman.com, has sprung as a conduit for anti-Letterman feelings and a protest is planned for Tuesday outside the Manhattan theater where his show is taped.

Political and partisan? Sure. But so were his jokes.

Here's the New York Daily News report on the spreading campaign.

It is highly unlikely that Letterman is going to get fired -- in fact, it is more likely that he will soon be signing a contract extension. But the controversy is providing an illuminating look as to what is acceptable and unacceptable on mainstream network TV when it comes to partisan attack political speech.

Hopefully, there is a higher standard than that of cable TV talk with the likes of MSNBC's Keith Olbermann and Fox's Bill O'Reilly and Sean Hannity.

Occasionally comics may cross the line although when I finally watched the episode (it was recorded) the audience didn't seem to find anything wrong with it.

Sarah's response was even more inappropriate (Matt Lauer's interview I believe) where she said she wouldn't trust kids with David Letterman. The interviewer even ask for clarification on it and suggested that comment simply brought her down to the level she was complaining that David Letterman was on.

I think we see why she got that pit bull nickname. She comes with a lot of yelling/screaming/tough talk but she seldom makes sense (like her recent interviews and the infamous Katie Couric one).

Hasn't she gone over her 15 minutes of fame? Egads, politicians.

Sarah Palin is a little sensitvie due to her 17 year old getting knocked up. It is a little late for her to play the good mother card. She has already showed America that she is no better than a mother living in a ghetto letting her kids run wild.

Anyone should know that going after someone's kid/kids is just wrong. Say what you will about the 'target' but leave the kids out of it. Period. I recall many years ago Rush Limbaugh made an totally stupid remark abt Chelsea Clinton's looks. When they take these kinds of shots; you have to consider the source. Sad.

Last September, a skit on Saturday Night Live suggested incest in the Palin family. "What about the husband?" asked a mock Times reporter. "You know he's doing those daughters. I mean, come on. It's Alaska!" No outrage. Sarah Palin appeared on the show one month later in late October.

Days after the announcement of Bristol's pregnancy, Conan O'Brien joked, "It's true, John McCain's running mate, Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, has revealed that her 17-year-old daughter is pregnant. Palin said, 'We should never have introduced her to John Edwards.'" Where was the outrage? Was Conan promoting infidelity with an underage girl?

From two different Tonight Shows: "Governor Palin announced over the weekend that her 17-year-old unmarried daughter is five months pregnant. Oh, boy, you thought John Edwards was in trouble before, now he's really done it!" AND..."All the Republicans are heaping praise on Governor Palin. Fred Thompson said, as an actor, he could see them making a movie about Sarah Palin and her family. Didn't they already make that movie? I think it was called 'Knocked Up!'"--Jay Leno

Craig Ferguson's skit of "Larry King vs Levi Johnston" asks about "kinky sex" with the drapes open. Craig Ferguson's honorary Alaska citizenship, granted by Governor Palin wasn't rescinded.

"According to expense reports, Sarah Palin charged the state of Alaska over $21,000 for her children to travel with her on official business. In fairness to Gov. Palin, when she leaves them home alone they get pregnant." --Seth Meyers (SNL). Sarah Palin was in a sketch with Meyers a week earlier.

October 8, 2008, Sarah Palin walked out on the ice with six year old Piper and 13 year old Willow, before the game, Conan O'Brien said, "Saturday night, Sarah Palin is going to drop the first puck at the Philadelphia Flyers' hockey game. Then Palin will spend the rest of the game trying to keep the hockey players out of her daughter's penalty box."
Oh, yes he did. You get the outrage...but not a peep then. According to the new "logic", O'Brien was advocating for some really sick stuff.

I considered how I would feel if Mr.Letterman had made that remark about my daughter, and or my wife i.e.(slut).

I would have accepted his invitation to visit his show .

But I don"t believe he would have liked my meeting him.

I would considered it a privilege to show the nation on national TV what a gentleman does when any one disrespects any women or worse a young girl.

And yes I would agree to pay for Mr.Letterman's medical bill after meeting him.

Palin would have much more credibility with me if she would huff and puff about Republican activist Rusty DePass' comments likening Michele Obama to a gorilla, instead of likening those who find Letterman's joke OK with rape.

Sarah Palin was the one who paraded her pregnant daughter around on TV when the GOP convention took place. That certainly set the tone for late night comics, gossip press mongers and alike. If she had any sense she would have protected her kids and kept them away from the limelight. Also, Letterman was spot on when he described her look as "Slutty Flight Attendant". You might not like the jokes but they are funny and very accurate.

Mr. Zurawik,
I'm curious about your description of this brouhaha as "partisan attack political speech." I don't agree. I don't put Letterman on the level of Olbermann or Hannity. Of course, I don't watch him either, so maybe I'm wrong, but I don't get the sense he has an axe to grind. Rather, it seems to me he made a joke that was in poor taste, plain and simple. I do think he was referring to Bristol, and not the other one (now I know her name is Willow, which I did not remember before), and based on her notoriety, I don't think Bristol is "off limits". I also don't care whether Letterman gets fired personally, but I am trouble by the free speech implications. I think the more interesting issue is how Gov. Palin and conservatives are using this issue. Really, other than making points with her base (and maybe getting Letterman fired, and causing others who would tweak the political class to think twice) I don't see this reasonating with most folks. I know it is endlessly fascinating to the chattering classes, but don't you think most people are concerned about the economy, their jobs, etc., and not on this piffle? How does this make anyone more likely to support Gov. Palin, who is not already a supporter? In fact, based on the transparency of her reaction I would think it make independents even more leery. After all, it wasn't too long ago that Gov. Palin was parading her pregnant unmarried daughter in front of the entire country.

I love how SNL makes incest jokes regarding Todd Palin and their daughters and she is on the show two weeks later. Apparently she find incest hilarious, but not statutory rape.

Political and partisan? Sure. But so were his jokes.

Are you implying that David Letterman only makes fun of Republicans. Did you ever watch Letterman when Bill Clinton was president? You couldn't watch his show without hearing a Monica Lewinsky or fat joke (many of which I found hysterical). Was Eliot Spitzer immune from his ridicule? I don't think so.

Face it, you've become the Joe Lieberman of the media- a right-wing moral scold who also poses as a moderate....

I edited this post to delete a reference to someone other than me. Criticize me all you want, but I won't let you use this space to unfairly attack my colleagues. Z

Probably good that is illuminating the issue. I think possibly a line was crossed, but a sincere apology should be made and everyone can move on. You can't start firing everyone for exercising their right of free speech. I think Sarah Palin made a mistake involving her children in her campaign anyway. She could possibly be right up there with Kate Gosselin expoliting them for publicity. Maybe she will use a little more discretion in the future. I can't agree with the rape comment at all, I don't think Letterman is a danger to society.

All in all, it's just a race to see who can be the most offended and play the righteous martyr.

Since when is late night comedy a bastion of good taste?

Me? I'm offended by the substitution of style for substance. So when do I get to do my sound bytes?

Letterman is a pervert and should be fired

I think that Sarah Palin is being a bit extreme about this joke.
I love David Letterman and I thought it was appropriate on Friday's show when he didn't talk about her at all. She is a big loser and I think this is making people see her true colors.

Palin was more than happy to parade her special-needs baby and pregnant daughter as evidence of "pro-life" credentials during the election. Obviously, Palin had put her career in front of her children in the past and failed with the daughter, but on the national stage, the children were right at the front, propping up their mother's overweening ambition. What's happening now is no one's fault but Palin's.

When I first heard the sound bite, I thought the joke was aimed more at A-Rod. Why isn't anyone rushing to his defense? Haven't the Yankees issued a press release? Or banned Letterman from their new, overpriced stadium? Where's the justice??

Children should be left out of these cruel jokes. Rush was wrong to make fun of Chelsea Clinton, but he is just a blowhard who doesn't represent most Republicans.

Letterman should have apologized; inviting Palin on his show is not the same thing. She's been a good sport and appeared on "Saturday Night Live." Let her raise her kids in peace.

It was A JOKE.

The whole family is now in the public eye.

Her daughter DID GET PREGNANT OUT OF WEDLOCK, and it was paraded all over America.

Letterman did nothing wrong. His joke was a knock at Alex Rodriguez, the Palin girl (obviously the one who had gotten pregnant), and Sarah Palin.

And Sarah Palin making a big deal about this is pathetic. It reflects the inability to discuss REAL issues, as opposed to using the media to just get some attention.

Letterman, Leno, Conan... they are comedians, commenting on the issues and people of the day.

I edited this post to delete a reference to someone other than me. Criticize me all you want, but I won't let you use this space to unfairly attack my colleagues. Z

Fair enough. So why don't you stop wasting time on this petty issue and focus on why the mainstream media isn't convering the Iran protests? I don't know if you've been reading the blogs, but a certain cable news network that you might be familiar with is being called out for their lackadaisical coverage of the events transpring in Tehran.

Hi, Actually, CNN has offered more coverage than any other cable network and, if I am not mistaken, actually has Christianne Amanpour on the ground there. Why is in CNN's job and not MSNBC or Fox to cover stories that are hard to cover? Thanks. Z

How funny would it be if we followed Letterman's lead while using the same justification he did for his verbal sexual abuse of Bristol Palin (really of Willow but lets allow him to change which daughter's underpants he was really in) of her being an unwed mother, fantasized ourselves on national TV about his slutty looking wife who herself was an unwed mother. Then also fantasized that when Letterman took his underage son to the Congress, Barney Frank had his way with him between hearings in Congress.

Sarah Palin used her kids as political props during the election, so her phony baloney crocodile tears can be safely dismissed out of hand.

If 'slut' jokes about her kids will help her get elected, she'll write the jokes herself if need be. If not, she'll hoot and holler and play the "poor poor pitiful me" victim so long as that will get her the votes.

The woman has no class and no credibility and I wish she would simply go away and stop annoying us.

I find it interesting reading these comments. It seems to be all about politics.

I thought this was about a entertainer (Letterman) making rude comments about a young girl.

Sarah Palin reacted be trying to protected her daughter like any good mother would do. For that she's being made out to be the bad guy.

She like all politicians have her children in puplic with her when running for office. That doesn't make it alright to make rude comments about them. I wonder what would be said had this been about one Obama's girls.

Letterman was wrong!!!!

I for one will no longer be watching his show. I don't support that kind of humor no matter if it's a child of a Liberal or republican.

Q: What's the difference between Olbermann & Madow?

A: Maddow may actually have ----!

I will say this. For the last 16 years it has been this way with the media. Anything goes for the GOP as far as bad jokes. But never joke about the other party! If dave was joking about Obama's kids, what would have happen? Everyone knows it. What about Clinton's daughter? Same thing, untouchable.

Thank you very much, yoyo, for posting that summary of OTHERS who have ALSO made equally tacky (or worse) jokes about the Palin family. Of course, the rest of us on Planet Earth already knew this, but it's nice to have a little reminder while the rest of the blogosphere is too busy ranting and railing to notice the double-standard in singling out Dave.

So one has to wonder why so much attention is focused solely on David Letterman, as though he's the only offender. Maybe people do need to dial it down a bit, but blaming David Letterman for ALL of it seems a bit... personal.

Isn't this really about revenge for the McCain-cancellation debacle?

Because that was when Dave first started becoming highly critical of Sarah Palin's qualifications as a VP-pick. (And back then, he didn't say jack about her kids--ANY of them.) So now he's made the mistake of sinking down to everyone else's level in the joke department, and now he--and only he--seems to paying a price for it. If Sarah Palin takes Dave down, she has to take EVERYONE down; otherwise, her "moral crusade" is nothing more than a personal vendetta.

Palin has demonstrated since November that she will embrace any excuse to stay in the public eye. Usually, as in this case, it's mock outrage at some imagined "attack" on her family. Once you're a public figure, you're fair game. She doesn't like it, she should crawl back under the Alaska rock she came from, and stay there.

Enough is enough! Letterman is a comedian and Palin is a politician! Jokes in poor taste...maybe! Palin has an agenda...most likely! Come on folks, can't you all see that? Don't let this crap stay in the news! We all should be talking about the ecomony, the healthcare system, the unemployment rate, the homeless and the like! Folks, we need to remember we have free speech in the country!

We need to do a better job at protecting our children.

What kind of courage does it take to hurt a child in order to hurt their parents?

Considering the majority of the posters see nothing wrong with attacking 14 year old child inorder to get their real target which is Sarah Palin, it makes sense that you are the same Baltimoron's that support the City's genocide.

Children are "fair game"? Really? Sounds like the killers that work our corners.

Doesn't digging 300 graves for our children get old every year? All of you posters that fail to protect children from bullying adults no matter what your political affiliation should be ashamed of yourself.

Go ahead digg another grave because you are the people that are putting Baltimore's youth there!!!

Oh for god's sake....Letterman's jokes were clearly in poor taste. But if someone needs to be fired, how about Rush Limbaugh. That man is foul, hateful, disgusting, and makes no apologies ever. If you're going to fire Letterman, the hate-monger Limbaugh has to go at the same time. And if you want to talk about hate-mongering, let's not forget Sarah Palin's groundless "pallin' around with terrorists" accusations, and neo-nazi tactics during the campaign. If Palin wants her children kept out of the public eye, perhaps she should quite pushing them onto the public stage.

There is a reason that Leno always trounced Letterman. If you can't beat a NBC show, you know you are bad. Letterman's seems to harp on the off color, biased, hate mongering jokes. Leno might slip a wee one every once in a while, but never pushes the issue to inflame the audience. Letterman just has no decency and quite frankly is an arse. I quit watching him years ago when he was spitting his drink out. He is nothing more than a childish imp!

Could it be possible that Sarah Palin is just using this (and a long list of questionable appearances...Seward day in upstate New York?...) to keep her name in front of her future voters in 2012?

She seems to espouse the saying, "there is no such thing as bad publicity".

If Letterman wants to tell political jokes and get it right (i.e., funny, not disgusting), he could do worse than invite the Capitol Steps on his show and Take Copious Notes. They go after everybody, and they rarely cross the line into the unacceptable.

First of all, I am a life long Democrat. Second, why put Hannity and O'reilly in the same boat as Lettermann and Olbermann? There are totally differant morals between these people(with Letterman and Olbermann having none that are visable). Has anyone ever caught Olbermann saying anything good about ANYONE? Is Letterman open for immoral jokes about his own son that was born out of wedlock?

Letterman didn't comment about Palin on his Friday Night show because it was taped on the previous Monday.

Iran is in complete chaos, North Korea is acting up AND imprisoning a couple of our journalists on dubious grounds, and the world economy is tanking.

And Sarah Palin would have us believe that she is fit to be on the national stage in ANY role? Barack Obama was criticized for his "celebrity" appeal when he spoke to 100s of thousands in Berlin, but who keeps popping up in People magazine and on the Today show? I think her nickname is CARIBOU BARBIE for a reason. She's certainly not a sought-after guest on any of the serious Sunday morning political talks shows, is she?

I want my country back.

First let me say that I'm not a Republican. I don't vote (and don't even get me started on our screwed up govt!). It's amazing how liberals are excusing Letterman's "joke" about the statutory rape of a 14-year-old girl. If some conservative talking head had made a similar comment about Chelsea Clinton, or Michelle Obama and her kids, that talking head would've been STRUNG UP in a public square like Benito Mussolini. The "aw c'com, it's just a joke" attitude is so typical of the horrific double standard in the mainstream media and the liberal left. Palin wasn't "parading around" her family and Bristol's pregnancy during the election season. All candidates "parade" their familes at the conventions. It was the MEDIA that dragged this to the public attention, and the McCain/Palin campaign HAD to address it because it was damaging news. Yes, Palin got all preachy about family values even as her teen daughter getting ready to give birth. But that does not, I repeat, DOES NOT, mean Palin was a bad mother. How does the logic compute? My mother was 19 when she had me and that absolutely doesn't make my grandmother a bad parent. Anyone who says otherwise can feel free to burn in Hell. As much as they might like to, parents can't be around their teens 24 hours a day. The fact that people need to realize is -- and you'd better brace yourselves -- most teens actually do have sex!! Yes, it's true! Hard to believe, isn't it? And no amount of parental supervision is going to keep teens from doing stupid things. Teed stupidity is not always easily chaulked up to bad parenting. A bad parent would simply let Letterman's comments slip by without a whimper. As for other offensive jokes made about Palin's family by other comediens/talking heads, I don't know why Palin didn't address them. Maybe she didn't know about them. I honestly don't know. She SHOULD have voiced outrage. It would've helped her during the election if she had, that's for sure. Conan's comments, if true and the context is accurate, were simply vile. But that doesn't mean Letterman's comments were any less offensive or are justified in any way. Everyone knows, or should at least admit, he's become more and more an ardent opponent of the political right -- and he crossed the line with Willow Palin. All she and her mother did was go to a "bleeping" baseball game. That's all. It wasn't a political event. How are Palin and her daughter "fair game" in this instance? Palin's a bad parent if she doesn't defend her family, but she's a political whore if she does. Seems like Sarah Palin is just pure slime and can't win no matter what she does, eh liberals? Perhaps the cruelest blow of all -- second only to the sick comment about Willow Palin, that is -- is that Sarah Palin is profiting in some free publicity. Jokes about raping her daughter? "Slutty flight attendent" comments? Liberals accusing of her being a bad parent? That's not the kind of publicity any prospective 2012 candidate would envy. BTW, in response to "Rich's" comment about the Letterman's audience not having a problem with his joke. First, audiences follow along to the flashing laughter sign -- or else it was edited in post-production. Otherwise Letterman would never get laughs to his pathetically unfunny jokes. Second, people in general can be pure scum when they set their mind to it. Case in point: Several months ago a driver runs over some guy in the street in Connecticut; pedestrians and other drivers pass by, and actually go around, the man who was laying, mortally injured in the middle of the street. I bet these were the kinds of people in Letterman's audience that night. Rant complete.

Get over it people. It was a joke. Others have said much worase and sara palin didn't say anything about that. In fact, she appeared on their shows. If anyone should be ashamed of themselves here, it's sara palin for using her children to further her "career" if you could call it that. That's what she's trying to do now by attacking letterman. GET OVER IT!

I'm a conservative, and I must say I'm so tired of the self-righteousness of both political sides. When I heard the joke, I laughed. That's right, I laughed. I guess I must be into statutory rape or something like that because, dammit, I laughed.
Letterman was JUST JOKING! IT WAS HIS MONOLOGUE! This controversy is all political. No one really cares about the daughters. If there were any angle to this, SOMEONE out there would ask about the "forgotten man," A-Rod. I wonder how he feels, since what was originally intended as a joke has now become so serious, with David Letterman guilty of such an egregious sin. Why doesn't someone ask how Letterman could be accusing A-Rod of statutory rape? BECAUSE IT WAS A JOKE--THAT'S WHY!

Palin is a joke. She will never be taking seriously. If she was really concerned about how our society views women I have a great idea. Speak out against Playboy,Hustler, and the Ms. America pageant. Dave is not the reason for poor treatment of women, and she knows. It is sad that she is using her daughter to get face time.

Lynn, I'm pretty sure you'd be promptly taken to jail and charged with battery. "His comments really hurt me emotionally" will be a poor defense.

Palin opened the door to this stuff by dragging her daughter's dirty laundry out on the campaign trail due to her stance on "Family Values." Then there was the whole taking her younger daughters with her to drop the puck of the opening face-off at the Philadelphia Flyers first home game. Palin said she thought the fans might not boo her if she had her younger daughters with her on the ice. If that's not the epitome of complete cynical idiocy since Philly is overwhelmingly Democrat and the tendency of Philly fans generally booing displays of mediocrity on the playing field.

Within a few days after baseball's World Series, at a campaign stop in Erie, PA, Palin stated she was glad to be back in the home state of the World Champion Phillies. The GOP brethren gathered there to see Palin greeted that statement with boos. Erie is more Pittsburgh Pirates or even Cleveland Indians territory than the Phils. I mean the people at the Erie campaign stop were there to see her and she screwed that up with her moronic, self-aggrandizing comments. Talk about ill informed or dumb headed-ness.

Where's the vaunted "liberal Media" in this whole scenario, after all why is anyone in the media even paying attention to this non-issue? Oops, I forgot that's merely a myth or falsehood spread by the GOP to prey on and confound soft-headed, feeble minded bumpkins that still believe the lying svengalies dispensing disinformation for the Republican Party. You know the ones that keep spreading bald-faced lies that Iraq was part of 9-11 and they had weapons of mass destruction but were too sly and kept us from finding them.

Letterman hasn't been funny in ages. I do think comedians can be very insightful and funny with the jokes they make about politicians. Aristophanes was probably the highest master of this...in 500 BC. I would say what Letterman is up to is plain old-fashioned bullying. "Let's beat up on Palin, and then say, come on, cancha' take a joke???"

I see several people on this site are up to that same line of thinking.

I used to be liberal, but watching some of the nouveau hate speech, oh woops, I mean jokes...that liberals engage in, especially when it comes to Palin, almost seems...insane. In fact, it reminds me a lot of the hate speech liberals accuse the Republicans of.

Matt, please get a pair of ears. He was obviously talking about the daughter that did get pregnant. It was a joke, not a factual news report about whichever Palin offspring actually set foot in New York that day. The only daughter the public knows is the one who got knocked up. Never even heard of Willow. People who say Letterman was talking about a 14-year-old girl are being deliberately obtuse.

How dare Sarah Palin use her kids to get on air time on Letterman. What a political whore. If she didn't have those kids, Letterman never would have joked about one of them getting knocked up. And imagine the nerve of her taking those kids on stage with her at the Republican convention. Parading them around on that stage for us all to see. We wanted to see Obama's family and also Bidens, so their parading their kids around was OK but who wanted to see Palin's family on stage? I felt she was taking advantage of being nominated VP just so she could parade those kids around in the spot light just so such incidents would happen later on that she would be able to take advantage of. If she didn't want Letterman making jokes about her family, why didn't she leave them all in Alaska?

And imagine the audacity of letting us see her disgusting pregnant daughter. If that isn't asking for that daughter to be trashed, what is? She should have tied her up in her basement until she gave birth and even then keep the baby and the mother hidden from our view. Imagine her allowing that daughter out in public! How disgusting is that. And how gross that the daughter is actually preaching abstinence and saying do not do what I did to other teens. What a hypocrite. She should be telling them to do what she did as she parades out there with her baby in her arms. The nerve wanting to warn other teens not to get pregnant when she clearly did get pregnant. So hypercritical. Just seeing the offspring of Sarah Palin upsets me. She should have listened to Obama and had an abortion so she wouldn't get "punished by a baby." If that is good enough for the Obama girls, who the hell is that Palin girl not to abort that kid.

I am also outraged that she had the nerve to show up in NYC to donate time for an autistic kid's charity. Just because her nephew is autistic, what gives her the right to donate time to that charity. I am sure she just used that excuse just so David Letterman would trash her and her family just so she could get into the national spot light. She must think we are so stupid not to see thru it all. She is the one that caused it herself!

And to think she had the nerve to take her daughter Willow (who ever heard of such a name) to a baseball game. What did she expect when she paraded a 14 year old out in public at a baseball game. She was just asking for Letterman to trash that daughter and fantasize about the 14 year old's sex life. I so defend Letterman. It was all Palin's fault. And that 14 year old should have known better than to let the public see her at a baseball game. How dare she show up there.

I am so sick of her causing all these liberals to trash talk her and her family. Just look at the suits she wears and even the glasses. So slutty. Even though she never shows much leg or any cleavage, just her wearing business suits makes her look like a slut. I mean look at her history. She must have slept with her husband a lot of times to have so many kids. So disgusting. Hasn't she ever heard of abortion? And if her child got pregnant out of wedlock, well doesn't that prove what a slut family it is? I heard she encouraged her daughter to sleep with her boyfriend without protection. What a terrible mother! Forcing her kid to behave like that and worse not making her have an abortion. Just another Palin we have to have in our world.

How dare she even leave Alaska. How dare she even have been born. Her very existence is an insult to everyone of us. I sure hope she has learned her lesson. The next time Letterman or any of the liberals trash talk her kids or her, the big slut, she needs to keep her mouth shut for she deserves it for just being born!

There used to be a time where the person who told a joke about someone else.would expect a joke and the F-Bomb right back. And they both had a good laugh. Nowadays, jokes "cross the line" and a political melee ensues. Boycotts, apologies, more apologies, etc. Again long ago, can you remember how an 18yr old would feel if their mother demanded an apology from someone.. The 18 yr old would say, "Mom, I can handle it myself. I'm not a baby" In this case, the kid's name provides a huge advantage. She can call Letterman directly and either make fun of him or demand his apology. I'm quite certain Letterman would take her call.
I have a feeling that the people who are most critical of Palin or Letterman have a bad case of "Jimmy Swaggartitus" So go on and continue being critical, you just may get caught one day eating your words.

DAVID LETTERMAN'S HATE, ETC. !

David Letterman's hate is as old as some ancient Hebrew prophets.
Speaking of anti-Semitism, it's Jerry Falwell and other fundy leaders who've gleefully predicted that in the future EVERY nation will be against Israel (an international first?) and that TWO-THIRDS of all Jews will be killed, right?
Wrong! It's the ancient Hebrew prophet Zechariah who predicted all this in the 13th and 14th chapters of his book! The last prophet, Malachi, explains the reason for this future Holocaust that'll outdo even Hitler's by stating that "Judah hath dealt treacherously" and "the Lord will cut off the man that doeth this" and asks "Why do we deal treacherously every man against his brother?"
Haven't evangelicals generally been the best friends of Israel and Jewish persons? Then please explain the recent filthy, hate-filled, back-stabbing tirades by David Letterman (and Sandra Bernhard) against a leading evangelical named Sarah Palin, and explain why most Jewish leaders have seemingly condoned Palin's continuing "crucifixion"!
While David and Sandra are tragically turning comedy into tragedy, they are also helping to speed up and fulfill the Final Holocaust a la Zechariah and Malachi, thus helping to make the Bible even more believable!
(For even more stunning information, visit MSN and type in "Separation of Raunch and State" and "Bible Verses Obama Avoids.")

Michelle, so then would you also call people obtuse who got upset about Don Imus referring to members of the Rutgers womens hoops team (who were nearly all African American) "nappy headed hoes." Oh, of course not! Imus was just being funny. He was just making a joke. There's no way Imus would go on the air before a national audience and say racist comments literally. He was only kidding around. Yeah, the women on the team were just being thin-skinned. Uh huh. Right. Sure.

I'm so very sorry you fail to see why Letterman's comments were such a bad thing. Are you excusing Letterman's remarks because he holds the same political views as you? Ask yourself: Do you read the New York Times and hate Republicans? Just curious. If someone like that "bleeping" Nazi windbag Rush Limbaugh said something similar about Michelle Obama, I bet you'd have no trouble finding your outrage.

Oh, before i forget ...

Just imagine. Sarah Palin is watching TV with her daughter, Willow. They see a clip of Letterman's "joke" on the evening news. Willow turns to her mother with a hurt, questioning expression on her face. Sarah Palin just smiles and pats Willow on the shoulder. "Oh, don't worry sweetie. He really didn't mean you -- even through you were the one at the game. He was talking about your big sister."

Now, let's go to an alternate universe for a moment, OK? It's 13 years ago, Bill Clinton is president. (Now this example is a little far-fetched, but just go with it.) His daughter, Chelsea, would be about 16. Let's say Hillary takes young Chelsea to a boxing match to see Mike Tyson fight. That following evening, Letterman goes on the air: "So, Hillary and her daughter were at Madison Square Garden last night to watch the Mike Tyson fight. They had a great time, mingled with celebrities, got autographs, and everything was just splendid ... expect for when Tyson knocked up Chelsea."

*this joke is then followed by a smattering of forced, half-hearted applause -- and the next day CBS demands Letterman's resignation*

Man, David Letterman suuuucks. He hasn't made a funny joke since the 80s. Somehow he's been on the air for years and his show seems more uncomfortable than Jimmy Fallon's show. It's like watching a guy fall out of a wheelchair and then watching him try to walk with his useless legs... just uncomfortable. And then you got Paul Schaffer just drawing attention to the whole fact with his incessant laughing directly into the microphone. Ugggghhh, who even cares what jokes he makes? He could talk about making out with Princess Diana in blackface for all I care. He'll never be funny again. People should just stop watching him.

The old double standard is in full force. Don Imus was fired and lost his show for making a crude remark about a women's basketball team. Precedent has been set. Gap-toothed Dave has got to go. Watch his show and list his sponsors. If you feel he should be put on the road start writing his sponsors. Stop using their products. This is the strongest message you can send. If the women's organizations that screamed loud and long for Imus to be booted out don't do the same now for Letterman they have zero credibility and all their talk is bullshit.

I don't think Letterman is funny.
His Palin 'joke' was in very poor taste.I am angry that he felt that he
could mock Sarah Palin and her family and his audience would go wild. I am only one person who voted for Palin in the passed election. I think
she is an excellent role model and I
am proud of her. The media was brutal but she still stands tall!

None of today's so-called comedians know how to tell a joke. Years ago, you would never hear anything so vile against other humans by comedians like, Bob Hope, Red Buttons, Jack Benny, and so many more. They were decent men and knew how to make the world laugh without being smutty and filthy. We have to consider the source. Letterman should look in the mirror and reflect on all the things he has done in his life, especially in how he has treated women. He did not even have the decency to marry the woman who was carrying his child until just recently. And, please ask these comedians to stop using phrases like, "knocked up"; this is so crude, but again consider the source. Perhaps, they do not know any other language - go back to school to use proper English!.

Alaska has the highest cases of rape/sexual assaults against Native women. Palin refused to buy rape kits needed to help with convictions. Saying that it would cost too much money. But, spent over 20 million on a stadium. I'm astounded and disgusted by her cruelty towards other women and children who have actual been raped.

It's a JOKE people. Do you folks honestly go through life THIS uptight? Jeezum, let it go---it's bad for your heart. And why do you care about this woman or Letterman enough to jump into this fray? They don't care about you. I promise. Palin feigns that she is offended to suit her political purposes. SHe is a whiny victim. Passive-aggressive complaining is NOT what we need in a leader.
