Conservative groups call for Letterman boycott
The trade publication TV Week reports that conservatives groups are calling for a boycott of the Late Show with David Letterman over crude remarks Letterman made last Monday about the daughters of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin. The remarks came in a Monday night monologue. Read my take here.
One of the more intriguing aspects of the report is the alleged email a blogger received from a major advertiser seeking to distance the product from Letterman. This is where the rubber meets to the road in television, and it is surprisning that CBS has yet to comment on the matter given the coarse nature of Letterman's word and the fact that they were directed at the child of a public figure, a category of people considered to be out of bounds for such attacks.
Here is part of what TV Week says:
Some conservatives and conservative groups are calling for a boycott of marketers who advertise on David Letterman’s late-night talk show on CBS because of the jokes he told about Sarah Palin and her family last week.
One of the advertisers targeted last week was Hilton Hotel Corp's Embassy Suites, because its ads appeared on the page for "Late Show with David Letterman” at cbs.com. Conservative Blogger Chris Wysocki says he contacted Embassy Suites and received this email reply:

Z,
I saw an interesting article over the weekend where some are saying this could actually help Letterman and make him relevant again at a time when Conan was about to slam the door shut. It was also interesting since I just searched for the article again using "Letterman Palin boost" and almost every CBS affiliate has the story linked. Wishful thinking on their part I'm sure, but we'll see what happens.

Way to keep making mountains out of molehills, Z.

I quit watching Dave letterman a while back because of issues as this and he is really showing that he is a big Jerk. No entertainer should promote their personal agenda on such a vehicle. I will contact all of his sponsers.

So are all of these same people going to boycott O'Brien and Leno for similar jokes they made last year?:
Leno: "Gov. Palin announced over the weekend that her 17-year-old unmarried daughter is five months pregnant. And you thought John Edwards was in trouble before! Now he has really done it."
O'Brien: "Saturday night, Sarah Palin is going to drop the first puck at the Philadelphia Flyers' hockey game. Then Palin will spend the rest of the game trying to keep the hockey players out of her daughter's penalty box."

David Letterman should know that politician's kids are off limits. It was especially in poor taste to joke about rape of a teen age child. Would David make the same joke about Obama's children? Would the population feel the same acceptance of the joke if someone had said the same thing of Obama's kids. David's political agenda went off the deep end and I deeply disagree with his actions although I support free speech. I am not calling for him to be fired but will certainly never watch him and will push others to not watch his shows or support him in anyway.

David Letterman is a sexual pervert and needs to be boycotted.

Where were these conservative hypocrites, with their hue and cry for a boycott, when Rush Limbaugh called Chelsea Clinton a dog?
Where were they when Ann Coulter suggested that Jews were religiously "imperfect?"
Why did they take the day off when Michael Savage outrageously claimed that autistic kids were "brats" and "idiots" and that autism, itself, was a "racket" and a "fraud?"
No wonder the two-faced dirt-bags lost as badly as they did in the last election - and small wonder if they never win another election in this country ever again.

Letterman wouldnt make the same comments about Obama's kids if Obama was a governor. The Obama's arent white. It is politically correct to cut down whites, especially white males, but it is not politically correct to cut down anyone else. Most of the members of our armed forces who gave their lives in world war two were white males, along with the black soldiers who also died. Maybe we should remind ourselves of that from time to time. I for one wouldnt be too fond of seeing a nazi flag flying in Baltimore.

Don't think I've ever heard teenage boys or men suffer the slams that seem to be aimed primarily at girls and women.
Why would he describe her outfit or a flight attendant's outfit with "that particular" word. The business suit was totally appropriate . . .wonder what he'd say if she wore "ruffles and lace"?

Hi, Clay!
Perhaps this has not occurred to you, but the only reason there are more white soldiers in the Army than any other "racial" type is because there are more of us here than anyone else. Native Americans have a higher percentage of their total numbers serving in the Armed Forces than anyone else. (If whites had volunteered in the same percentages during WWII the government wouldn't have had to institute the Draft.) Thank you for remembering that black men also put their lives on the line for the country they also loved, despite the fact that they couldn't eat in its restaurants or vote without fearing for their lives and livelihoods.
You are partially right about whether Letterman would have made the same joke about the Obama kids if he were a governor (presumably in Illinois) who had not recently run for a higher politidcal office, but your reasoning is faulty. Color has nothing to do with it. Face it - Letterman wouldn't have a clue as to whether an out-of-his-state governor even had any kids. I know I can't tell you anything about my own state's governor's children ... and I'll bet you can't either!
I wish we could go back to the days when people found a way to be funny without tearing other people down. Maybe that's why I still think Bill Cosby is the funniest man in America.

Hi Jane. I suppose what I should have said was that Letterman wouldnt have made the same comments about Obama's kids if he had lost the election and one of his kids had gotten pregnant out of wedlock. It just isnt accepted by the media to make jokes of blacks like they do about whites. I suppose one of the reasons for that is because blacks had their unfair share of it in past times. That doesnt make it ok to constantly do the same to whites however. Thanks for your comments.

Hi, Clay - good to hear from you.
You may be right about Letterman's comments about Obama's kids, but we'll never know because Mr. Obama is President and his two little girls are both seriously underaged and seem very well behaved.
You are absolutely correct that no group should be singled out for abusive humor - I've walked in those shoes too and it hurts.
It is a difficult tightrope walk defending every American's right to free speech when so many people abuse it, but if I don't defend other people's rights, who will defend mine?
This is what makes democracy harder than it looks.

Hi Jane. Yes, society as a whole has lost a sense of decency and respect for others. Ed Sullivan may have had comedians on his show who imitated him, but they didnt talk about his wife and kids. If they had they would never have appeared on the show again. I cant even blame the hippie movement. It seems like in those days people still had a sense of respect, although "do your own thing" was probably leading us down the wrong path. I think disrespect started to get out of hand in the 70's with shows like "Saturday Night Live," although there were some funny skits on the early shows. The movies picked up on it and things just continued downward. As a Christian I would have to say that our society has gotten farther away from God as time has moved on. If I leave a Christian post, there are more people who put it down than support it, some with a lot of anger. That reflects society as a whole. The only things I watch on tv are the Orioles and the old movie channel, and I think I am better off for it. So are the families I know who dont allow a tv in their house. Their kids are more respectful and tend to not get pregnant out of wedlock. Thanks.

I stopped watching David Letterman ages ago because he is too political. I enjoyed watching Johnny Carson because the viewer didn't know if he was a republican or a democrat. Letterman has become a pompous jerk. The same for Conan.

Letterman is so evil, and his fans are so blind to morality, that perhaps half the country is completely lost, and they dont know it.
