Adam Lambert steals the show in final Idol competition
Nothing else matters about Tuesday night's competition final except what Adam Lambert did with Sam Cooke's A Change Is Gonna Come. If anyone in the audience of 30 million still didn't know which of the two finalist was an artist, they did after this soul-stirring, electrifying interpretation by the 27-year-old singer from San Diego.
Kris Allen did do better in the first round with Ain't No Sunshine than Lambert did with Mad World. But in the second round when Lambert soared up into the high-note/bent-note land of Patti LaBelle where gospel meets blues and rhythm & blues, the competition was over. Allen, with that pretty-boy smile and thin voice, was left for dead on the killing room floor.
The last number, No Boundaries, did neither of them any favors. Simon Cowell rightfully mocked its vapid imagery as "all hurricanes and mountains." It gave new meaning to shallow, and it was no surprise to find out it was co-written by judge Kara DioGuardi. (She co-wrote it with Cathy Dennis and Mitch Allan.) My guess, the Idol producers used it because they got it for next to nothing in rights fees from the woman who hopes she will be brought back next year as a judge.
But let me not kvetch. Every second I spent with Idol Tuesday night was worth it to see Lambert tear into and tear up A Change Is Gonna Come. On Sunday, I wrote about him as the musical descendant of Elvis Presley, and he certainly had the gospel and R&B parts down cold in his rendition.
Lambert did his part straight through to the end Tuesday. Now the rest is up to us. The vote is going to be a barometer as to whether the mainstream, mass TV audience is willing to accept an artist -- or simply prefers a song stylist who is good at looking humble and shy.

Adam’s performance of “Change” was phenomenal! However, that third song was REALLY BAD! I was embarrassed for Kris and Adam. Kris because of the WAY he sang the song and Adam because he HAD to sing that pathetic song! I almost hope Adam does not win if they are going to force him to sing CRAP like that! THIS is EXACTLY why many music lovers and those in the music industry laugh at American Idol and do not respect the performers that come off this show. Remember how Carrie Underwood was criticized by Country Music because "she had not paid her dues". We finally get someone like Adam that legitimizes idol and who is in the final with him? A sub-par performer (Kris), that if he wins, we all know will go the way of Cook, Fantasia, and Studdard! It is not I don't like Kris, rather that he is VERY forgettable. Adam DESERVES to win idol but if he does not, he already won our hearts and won himself a legitimate place in the music industry. I hope he has a dump truck to carry his money to the bank…he is definitely going to need one! :-) Go Adam! You deserve to win!

thanks for this post!
adam deserves to win, hands down
i hope america listens to simon, cos he is the voice of truth and vote adam for idol!

I actually preferred Adam's Mad World over Kris Allen's first song. Kris didn't change it up at all and yes it was lovely but we heard it the first time. I was moved and entertained more by what Adam did with Mad World. I thought creatively wow, this is what a concert will be like with Adam Lambert! Seeing what Kris Allen will do...well, I was bored.
The second song, hands down was completely different for Adam. He showed us another side to his talent and reminded me that Adam has so much soul! Dang I mean he could have gone to church on that one and even Danny Gokey would have been proud. Kris Allen's was very watered down.
That 3rd song made me think why the heck do they have Kara on that show?!?! I mean she obviously doesn't know who these two are if she is going to throw out a song like that to them and I think they need to throw that song out and let the guys pick a completely different one to sing. I do not want to hear that one again. That is more for...Jordan Sparks!

I agree with this article 1000%.

It is funny to read articles like this and writers talk about artistry as if artistry is meant to define a certain type, a defined way.
Artistry comes in many shapes and forms and I believe Adam and Kris are both great artists.
I do believe Adam deserves this title because over the past weeks, he has shown a consistency in pushing his own brand of artistry. However, Kris deserves no less praise as he has chosen to do his own arrangements of songs, probably not as flashy or as grand as Adam, but nevertheless as compelling.
To presume that America appreciates artistry ONLY if they vote for Adam is arrogant, intolerant and just wrong. I'm sure the artist you are rooting for (Adam in this case) will agree to that 100%.

Adam stole the show. He deserves to win, however if he doesn't, I'll never watch the show again. Too many politics and red tape. So who cares about his sexuality. Hollywood has many homosexuals, so whats the buzz. He is the most talented contestant ever. Its amazing that there is not accountability on the votes, the producers can sway the outcome any way they want to gain there numbers. How sad!!! Thats ratings!!!

We are 2 days behind here in South Africa, but we all know Adam will win. What an amazing talent.
VOTE AMERICA!!! Close your eyes and listen to the voice if you really want to judge.

Adam should win - he's the best talent ever on AI. Whether America agrees or not depends on how far we've come as a country - being able to appreciate talent without prejudice. Good luck Adam - you deserve to be the clear winner!

Your article is great...except for the second paragraph. I hardly ever comment on articles, but I just had to for this one. Are you kidding me?
Your quote:
"Kris Allen did do better in the first round with Ain't No Sunshine than Lambert did with Mad World."
Mad World is going to make Adam famous. I would buy an album JUST for that song alone! Kris singing 'Aint No Sunshine' was good..just good. Not spectacular, not earth moving, just good. To be honest, I wouldn't buy an album just to hear that song.
Like I said..your article pegged it..except for that part..just my opinion!
Hi Jean, I take your point, and I think many people probably agree with you about Mad World. I just love this guy as soul singer, though. I did not have a problem with his rendition of Mad World -- I just don't like the song the way I do A Change Is Gonna Come. Thanks. Z

If you close your eyes and listen to Adam Lambert... it is pretty awful. I think people are LOOKING at him instead of listening to him. He literally screams every song. I'm pulling for Kris. His voice his more melodic and more appealing to my ears. I think he'll do better commercially than Adam. Adam should stay on stage...the Theatre Stage and that is it. With Kris, I can close my eyes and listen to him sing and he sounds great. When I look at him I am at times distracted by the funny facial expressions he makes while he sings but that really shouldn't matter...doesn't anyone remember Joe Cocker?

Missed it I was at a softball game. Sounds like Adam might win this one. Also sounds like he deserves it! My kids have it recorded, I will have to watch.

Adam Lambert clearly should win American Idol. His talent, charisma, performance skills, and genuine charm are light years ahead of Kris Allen.. I mean no offense to Kris, he is simply out of his league here. Adam is the perfect 'Idol' and you Americans should be thrilled and proud to have him.

Adam Lambert is FANTASTIC, He was the best through out the show.Loved Mad World, will have to down load it again.I am sad that I don't have any more Tuesday's to look forward to ....

Anyone who thinks Adam is "screaming" needs to get a better sound system. Bottom line, Adam is concert-like and Kris would perform well for small intimate settings.
BTW: Kris really did not "understand" the significance of the Marvin Gaye song or else he would not have sang a "light" version. He really missed an opportunity there. This song was equivalent in weight and meaning to the Sam Cooke song, into which Adam poured his emotions as well as talent.
Adam has a special musical "intelligence" and well deserves to win.

I agree with you completely. Adam Lambert has spent the entire season in a class by himself and last night was no different. He should win and I sincerely hope he does. But on the off chance that Lambert isn't getting that confetti shower at the end of the night this viewer will no longer be watching Idol. Honestly, how can the best singer ever in the history of Idol not win a singing competition?
Posted by: Chensuu | May 20, 2009 9:54 AM
isn't adam a one-trick pony? he screams and unfurls his tongue in every song. kris is a little bland, but he also has more control over his voice. adam is definitely more of "the package," but he's also very predictable when it comes to the way he sings (which is not to say kris is an ingenue).

Elvis? Really, Z-man? Adam's a singer on a TV talent show...I don't see him as a force ready to transform pop culture.
I try to watch this show every year, mostly so that I can write reviews online making fun of everyone on it....and eventually, I get burned out and annoyed. I stopped watching a few weeks back, because I just couldn't stomach the whole "I hope Daddy/Simon approves and loves me"
design of the show. I hope that made sense.
Elvis? If he were alive today, and he read your comparison, well, he'd probably be very bloated. But I digress...

Adam is an amazing talent and deserves to win

Although Mad World was good it wasn't near as powerful as what Adam did it a few weeks back. I have to agree that Kris did win that round but in an overall comparison they aren't in the same league. Adam could compete vocally and probably beats guys like Freddie Mercury, Robert Plant, etc, in their prime. In my opinion he may be one of the best vocal talents ever.
I was really hoping Adam would sing Bohemian Rhapsody on one of the shows as that would of really shown off his incredible vocal range. Other songs I was dying to here him sing were Creep (Radiohead), Dream On (Areosmith), or Stairway to Heaven (Zeppelin) because they are all rock classics that Lambert would put his spin on and possible make then sound better then the originals.

1st performance i thought was ADAM's way of saying this is me n i
aint gonna change so deal with it!!!!!!he looked lyk a SUPERSTAR n dis was his show, his concerts r going 2 be AWESOME.
2nd performance was beautiful n brought me 2 tears. His interpretation was awe-inspiring and he poured his heart out in that amazing voice of his. And as paula says there r simply no adjectives 2 describe ADAM's talent....
3rd perfomance you couldnt blame them for the song which was super-lame, however ADAM worked it in2 a powerful vocal performance with conviction. He let his vocals consume the melody n song so that it didnt matter what the lyrics were!!!!!
kRIS relys heavily on using minimum intruments as his voice drowns completely as the music is more than a piano/guitar, which summed up all 3 performances. While he did good on the 1st the 2nd was an utter mess. From the arrangement 2 the tone of his voice; nthg showcased the actual meaning of the song. 3rd performance oh my dear was utterly embarrasing, as KRIS was hanging on for dear lyf attemting 2 hit a few high notes strainin every fibre of his being in doing so.I really felt sorry for him.

Adam kinda looks like Elvis, but that's as far as it goes.
Posted by: Lizzie | May 20, 2009 11:54 AM
Your last line says it all...do we want a competent singer with a sweet disposition, or do we want a true star performer. I choose Adam Lambert.
Posted by: Hanna | May 20, 2009 12:09 PM
Steve, you're RIGHT ON, saying, "I almost hope Adam does not win if they are going to force him to sing CRAP like that! THIS is EXACTLY why many music lovers and those in the music industry laugh at American Idol and do not respect the performers that come off this show". I've never followed AI until I happened to see Adam perform "Satisfaction" and was hooked on his performances since. If Kris wins, AI loses whatever credibility there was left in this show as a SINGING/STAR-SEARCHING contest.

America is changing faster, and more profoundly, than some seem to realize. Our attitudes toward gays have moved far ahead, gay marriage is legal in five states, soon a sixth and -- best yet -- more and more people have trouble stifling a yawn.
No decent American cares who Mr Lambert sleeps with. It's none of our business. Nor yours. All that counts is talent and, in that regard, he's so far beyond the mediocre norm as to be astonishing. What's more, "Live and let live" remains one of our founding principles, although a few Americans seem to have forgotten this.
In 2005, 'Brokeback Mountain' was considered dangerous, controversial, an un-watchable film for 'decent' folks. Today? A classic, the 8th-highest grossing romantic drama of all time, and the most-honored film ever made. The 'Brokeback Effect' continues.
A few may not like it, but we are as a nation actually growing up. I for one wish Mr Lambert well. His remarkable talent is a gift from God.

Clearly we will look stupid to the rest of the world is Adam doesn't win. It wasn't even close, it was a massacre.
Posted by: Laine | May 20, 2009 3:16 PM
Kris sucks. Can't stand to look at him as he tries to sing. Annoying. Boring. Monitone. Adam has been the winner all along!
Posted by: Cmitch | May 20, 2009 4:05 PM
I am a 40-something old rock chick who absolutely detested American Idol and what its done for the music industry. However, this season did I not only find myself glued to my seat every Tuesday and Wednesday night watching AI, but (gasp!) I actually voted for Adam week after week. Fueled by my obsession for more Adam, I cruised the net seeking out everything i could find on this supertalent, downloading every recording and watching every video clip of his performances dating back to when he was very young. Adam has been given a gift from God and doesn't just deserve to win, he deserves to be a stratospheric superstar in his own right. How he was not discovered before AI is beyond me and whomever was managing him was a complete incompetent moron.
Speaking of morons, that Kara DioGuardi should be resoundingly bounced from that show and from our collective consciousness if last nights third song is any indication of her "talent". What a piece of garbage of a song that was! A 10 year old could have written a much better song!
Win or lose, Adam Lambert has single-handedly changed American Idol in one full swoop. Maybe now we can be done with all these lame, nasily, boring, cookie cutter, recording industry cardboard "singers" that abound today! At least one can hope.....
Posted by: fm64 | May 20, 2009 6:22 PM
That song Kara co-wrote absolutely sucked. If this is the future of Idol they have lost me as a fan. I can't even believe that they let Adam and Kris sing that horrid piece of garbage. It was without a doubt the most boring show of the year. I sat down expecting to be wowed off the couch and instead I was disappointed and felt used. I am hoping tonights show is better. I am not a Paula fan but wow I will put up with her anyday as long as I never have to listen to more crap written by Kara. I can't believe Simon let that song go on the show and didn't say anything. He must of lost his gnads since last year.
Posted by: Linda | May 20, 2009 6:37 PM
Recalling that this is afterall a glorified singing competition and the point of it is to see which artist is better at selling their albumns, just simply take away the visual element and listen to their singing. Personally, after hearing the first round, I disagree with Simon. It is quite clear to me that if I had to pick a version of "Ain't no sunshine", I would spend my money on Eva Cassidy and Jose Feliciano before I consider Kris Allen. However when it comes to "Mad World", I'd gladly pay for Adam's version over Gary Jules and even the original Tears for Fears. That's how I would stack this competition up.
Posted by: Frank | May 20, 2009 7:53 PM
Jean, you can see that you are one in this majority of Adam lovers here, including myself.
IN fact - I think Adam won all 3 rounds hands down. Simon was just being humble to Adam. The 2nd time I hear his MAD WORLD - it give a different feeling from the first time. For Kris, yes I like Aint no Sunshine, but it is the same, except for change to piano. No surprises. And no big deal about knowing how to play piano and guitar. Scott, Matt and so many musicians can play them.
As someone said here, if Adam does not win, I really lost respect for you Americans. Such a talented guy - and still lost out to a lesser one.

Adam Lambert. Can he sing? Yea he can. However, hes no more than a pretty boy maggot for all the couch potatoes to watch. He is NOT a musician, he has little talent. I am appalled at the number of people who are jumping up and down hystericaly over this wanna be ragamuffin. Shame shame shame.
