Obama scores 100 in TV press conference

President Barack Obama answers questions from reportersThe The economy is still a nightmare. The military situations in Afghanistan and Pakistan are perilous -- and getting worse. But for all the troubles swirling around the nation these days, America has rarely seemed to be in such steady and capable hands.

That was the feeling that came across on TV Wednesday night watching President Barack Obama's 100-days press conference. Even on his best nights, John F. Kennedy did not seem as calm, confident and masterful as Obama did in an hour's worth of prime time give and take with the press.

As good as Obama has been in such settings before, Wednesday he seemed perfectly tuned to each shifting topic and tone.

The president was appropriately sober, moral and earnest in talking about waterboarding as torture -- without taking the bait and using the question to attack players in the previous administration for their excesses in prisoner abuse.

But he could also be teasing and playful as when a New York Times reporter asked him what he was most "surprised, troubled, enchanted and humbled" by in his first 100 days. By the time the questioner got to "enchanted," Obama was reaching in his suit coat pocket for a pen saying, "Wait, let me write this down." He made great theater out of getting all of the long question on paper -- especially the word "enchanted."

But then, Obama went on and gave thoughtful and eloquent answers to each of the four parts of the question.

As impressive as Obama was in that exchange, his best moment came in explaining to a questioner how Britain's Winston Churchill refused to allow the torture of Nazi prisoners during World War II even during the darkest hours of The Blitz when Britain was under a withering German air attack night after night.

Obama quoted Churchill as saying he would not allow torture because he feared behaving in such a manner would "corrode the character of the nation" -- in other words, the British people would be the ultimate victims of torturing their enemies. It was an inspired historical point of comparison that allowed the president to show how incredibly short-sighted and even ignorant George W. Bush and Richard Cheney were in their policies of torture without having to mention either man's name Wednesday night.

Outside of the Fox broadcast network, the cable channels and nets all had special programs planned for Wednesday in which analysts would assess Obama's performance in office for the first 100 days.

But the president stole their thunder with his press conference performance. It was as good or better than Ronald Reagan on his very best TV night. And outside of a few disingenuous remarks from Obama alleging that he does "not want to grow government," there was far more substance, coherence and sense of history to the president's performance than Reagan could ever imagine.

I particularly liked when he quoted Churchill. Very wise decision.

When will this country wake up and realize whom they voted for? This country is in serious trouble. Obama (and the Democrats, too) spent more money in one day on that horrible "stimulus" bill than a person spending $1 million for every day for 2,000 years. Obama is a great orator, but it is not style that makes a great politician- its substance! He has none. Get over the infatuation with this man.

America is getting what it voted for....a slip into socialism, which will turn into communism.....hmm.....20th Century Russia ring a bell anyone?

A First Hundred Days that will change America....

Where's the objectivity in the MSM?

Like someone from The Sun would have anything different to say. More proof there's no reason to read it.

Here's a prediction; David Zurawik will love Obama's next speech too.

I just loved the Churchill line. To bad Zurawik or anyone else noted the fact that Churchill knew exactly where his enemy was and where to find them.
Gee, I wonder if Zurawik and all the other "War is not the answer" people would have approved of the civilians that were bombed repeatedly and knowingly in WWII?

Let me go out on a limb here, and predict you voted for BHO? 100% ? Good theater?
Come on, take off the blinders give us an honest assessment. He did well here, missed an opportunity there. This wasn't an A+ performance except if your name was Rhambo or the Ragin' Cajun. Try a little honesty, rather than look for ways to mention his 'chiseled abs'.

Gee, you're over the top for Obama? Shocking. You're so biased it's not funny.

Like Don Henley wrote, "I make my living off the evening news. Just give me something, something I can use. People love it when you lose, they love dirty laundry. Well, i coulda been an actor, but I wound up here. I just have to look good, I don't have to be clear. Come and whisper in my ear. Give us dirty laundry. Kick em when theyre up, kick them when theyre down. We got the bubble headed bleach blond who comes on at five. She can tell you bout the plane crash with a gleam in her eye."

Why do I think of this song whenever I see BO him with that cheshire cat smile while Rome is burning? It's great to see him so happy while tens of millions of americans have either lost their job or have serious fears about losing them at any minute.

News Flash, we have serious problems regardless of how we got here and it's insulting to see him gloat about how wonderful he is.

As for how well his first 100 days went? It will be years before we will truly know. And even then you will have to weed threw the bias from both sides.

How is it disingenuous that he said he doesn't want to grow the size of government? You think that because he's using government right now to vigorously address our current crises, that Obama intends to permanently grow government? What evidence do you have of that?

“Self-praise stinks” says an old German proverb. Obama has always been a “very concerned” empty suit. But for the press to behave like immature teenagers and drool over him is despicable and proof that they are immaterial and obsolete. We are all aware that Hussein is able to read teleprompter.

As to the chatter about torture it would be behoove the press to ask Hussein about the torture bestowed upon us through his policies and reckless spending.

Let’s analyze this absurdly fraudulent character of this US president. How much has Obama spent on helping his own family, like his poverty stricken half-brother? Null. Nobody should believe a pathological narcissist who cares about one thing only, himself and his façade.

As to the press: The press willingly subject itself to be his slaves.

Wastedrys remarks that Churchill knew who is enemy was, and where to find him. Well, we today cannot say the same. Osama bin Laden and his supporters are criminals, yet we want to say we are at war with radical Islam. There is no war with the Islamic world today than there was in the past 1500 years, so let's stop the warmongering and act like a mature, responsible nation. Not like some sailor that got pushed from behind in a darkened barroom, and then strikes back at the weakest person he spots when he cannot find the real person responsible.

Obama said: "Obviously I didn't anticipate the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression. What?!!! I heard this and almost fell out of my chair! Didn't Obama say throughout his campaign - over, and over, and over - that we are facing the worst economic crisis since the Gread Depression?

So Palin's an idiot and Obama may, in fact, be the greatest person who has ever lived? What bias? I think the hype over the first 100 days for ANY president is ridiculous anyway. He's got 1161 days left in this term, and with the way the republicans are going, I think a 2nd term is looking pretty good. Maybe there's something wrong with me, but I'd like to see some of his plans in action before I make a judgement.

Wow, what a surprise that someone from the Sunpapers would be drooling at the sight of the messiah. And, still had to plug in that hatred for anything Bush. Bush kept us safe for almost 8 years after 9/11. Let's see if this friend of our ememies can do the same, after he guts the military, lets out all CIA classified info, and sets all the terrorists free. Also, comparing treatment of a simple nazi soldier, to the efforts of extracting information from an Al-Queida leader is far from fair.

Great Britain had a history of torturing IRA "freedom fighters" far worse than waterboarding. Obama's knowledge of history is usually faulty, as are most liberals. As far as the NYT's question, why was that question even answered? I give him a 50, despite your American Idol rating. Delivery yes; substance, no! No followups,, no hardballs, just suckup questions. I do credit the CBS reporter for his questions, however. The lack of answers or specificity was obvious. Get that puss off the TV and into the White House working, not crowing over non-existent accomplishments. 2010 and 2012, here we come. The Sun will be completely online only. By the way, who was flushed out in the latest cost-cutting moves at the Sun? Pity what happens when liberal bias takes over a once-great and proud paper.

100?
do you believe that you are an objective non biased reporter?

LOL!!!!!!!!!!!

I cannot seem to get used to the venomous reaction to any praise for Obama, per the preceding comments. Senator Arlen Specter has turned away from such sentiments, and I'm glad for him and for the Democrats.

If you consider dancing around and deflecting questions "masterful", then I guess you did love it. I especially enjoyed his non-answer regarding the Freedom of Choice Act. Strange how he was never asked any "tough" questions on the economy and the unsustainable debt he is running up, but is asked what he finds "Enchanting" about the Presidency. That is certainly a huge question of our time and one that is on the minds of most Americans. ???? This is what reporting has been reduced to by the continual, nauseating, fawning by a sycophantic press that has their lips permanently wrapped around this guy's you know what, of which David Z seems to be a member in good standing.

To me, the most troubling aspect of things these days can be een in the kneejerk angry reaction displayed in the comments here.

People are foaming at the mouth, and I'm not exactly sure why just yet. It's terrifying.

Agree with him or disagree with him on policy, but sutely we can all agree that it is refreshing to see a president who can think on his feet, is comfortable with having press conferences, isn't lying, and can speak coherently.

Or can we?

Good morning haters!!!

What a smooth performance by the prez. Slick and professional. Teflon-esque if I say so. Keep listening to your hate-filled radio and TV pundits who every day seem more and more irrelevant(just like the followers). No solutions are being offered by you, just petty, petty kindegarden- type complaints. And how would any of you haters know what the prez said last night since the masters of your universe(FOX) didn't air the press conference. Keep on hating and keep on losing election cycles and keep on losing senators(welcome Arlen!!) and keep up your losing ways by shifting even more to the pathetic right by spreading fear. A great time NOT to be a republican!!!!

Could you be any more in the tank for this guy? .

Why is it that the ones who don't support our President are the only ones who will take the time to comment on his speech??

Mr. Zurakwik's job here, for those too blinded by hate to have a clue, is not to critique the President's job. It is to REVIEW A SPEECH.

Nice review, Mr. Zurawik.

i wonder, along with jim, why so many people would like to see president obama fail. i would prefer that it was just emotional immaturity, and not something more sinister like racism. many of us are much more comfortable with this man in the white house than we were during the cheney presidency. his solid performance, both in the first 100 days and in the press conference, attest to abilities. to haters: deal with it.

Z - Completely disagree. First, Mr. Obama has a great speaking voice, and he reads well from a teleprompter - no questioning that. He seems like a cool guy, and I would bet that I would enjoy having a beer or six with him. However, to say the country is in "steady and capable hands" is the overstatement of the century.

Mr. Obama is in way, way, way over his head. We need look no farther than this week when for a "photo op" he sent air force one and a military jet for a low altitude flyover of New York City. I mean, come on? That is the height of stupidity. Nothing like a little panic to breed confidence, huh? You and I both know that Bush would have been excoriated for doing that.flyover. How about Tim Geithner, Tom Dashle and the multiple other high level cabinet picks that failed to pay taxes. Competent Presidents do not appoint such people. Competent Presidents also do not treat terrorists as civilian criminals, embrace dictators and they certainly do not go abrad and trash the United States to other nations.

Let us talk about the economy; something about which he knows nothing. The economy is in the doldrums due to government largesse, innappropriate monetary policy and regulations designed to fit people into homes they could not afford. His remedy? Grow government more with pork project handouts to Democratic special interests (a large portion of which mysteriously goes to Illinois), and to make matters worse, most of the money will not be spent for years. So, he is spending money we don't have to fix a short term economic issue, yet the money will not be spent in the short term. Makes sense, huh?

Oh, and he disavows the deficits he now has, yet he helped craft them. There is a reckoning coming in the form of inflation and higher taxes in our very near future due to his policies. What do you get when you mix economic stagnation, higher taxes and inflation? Think Jimmy Carter.

His future agenda? A European style medical system (universal coverage) and a "cap and trade" system where he taxes air. Both are extremely costly, but in different ways. His government run healthcare plan is immensely expensive monetarily, and what is more, history shows us that the quality of care goes down. Ask yourself whether you want a loved one with a serious illness being denied care or placed on a waiting list for a procedure that is both lifesaving and which currently could be done immediately. Why do you think rich people from Canada and overseas come here for healthcare? As for cap and trade (and yes, there is a chasm of scientific opinion as to whether the planet has a naturally shifting climate as history has shown or whether humans are causing the planet to warm by emitting CO2), it is at the end of the day a huge tax on energy and any other manufacturing process that emits air. The costs will be shifted to consumers, and one of the main effects is higher energy and food costs for people. Who will be hurt most? The poor of course as they will have to pay more of their income for food and heating/cooling bills.

I could go on, but why? I will leave you with Rasmussen's Presidential Tracking Poll for today. Rasmussen was the most accurate pollster for the last election and Scott Rasmussen is extremely well regarded as pollsters go.

Obama's approval rating is... 54%. So, let us dispense with the idea that he enjoys widespread support. Oh, and 54% is atrocious for a President 100 days in, and far lower than most of his predecessors.

http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/obama_administration/daily_presidential_tracking_poll

Where are all the moderate liberals, who vote against party lines?

And speaking 'coherently' does not include the phrase 'ah ah' when confronted without the Teleprompter. BHO is a slick package, but changes his views (see torture, lobbyists, etc.) with the polls. This isn't leadership, it's guidance by focus group.

All you have to do is look at the post by Mike D to see how insane, jaded and cultish the Republican party has become. Just because some propaganda blog that is slanted for your warbled views says something, does not make it fact!!! Whatever happened to clear thinking?? If I didn't know any better, I'd swear that Jim Jones is still alive, by the under the influence drinkers who give their weak positions backed by facts from nobodies. Who cares about Rasmussen!! Who in the hell is he?? Another lackey in the right-wing insanity cog? Why stop there?? Quote blogs from The Great Pumpkin, The Great Gazoo, The Wizard of OZ, Scooby Doo, Don Rickles, Milton Berle, the man at the local tavern, the man standing next to you as you read this, the lady across the water cooler who has a blue dress on......all of them probably have something more coherent to say than these loons whose minds are infected with hatred for our president. Who are the real enemies of America? One needs look no further than this blog.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME??
SOFTBALL QUESTIONS.
NOTHING ABOUT THE AMERICAN HOSTAGE IN IRAN.
NOTHING ABOUT THE CRASHING ECONOMY.
BRITIAN -- ?? CHURCHILL? THEY ARE TOUGHER ON TERRORISTS IN CUSTODY THAN WE ARE!!!
TORTURE -- THAT IS A SLAP AT THE BUSH ADMINISTRATION.

YOU ARE JUST ANOTHER MEDIA MEMBER COVERING FOR OBAMA BECAUSE YOU PUSHED HIS ELECTION AND NOW YOU MUST KEEP HIM PROPPED UP.

BULL___IT.

@ Mack - First, you assume I am a Republican. In fact, I am neither a Republican nor a Democrat. Moreover, maybe you are new to the country or maybe you were not taught this in civics class, but in the United States, it is acceptable for people to have views that are different than your own. In fact, that is precisely what makes our country great.

Now to your point (or lack thereof). You have described me as "insane, jaded and cultish", insinuated that I do not think clearly and intimated that myself or people that think the President is incompetent and in way over his head are "the enemies of America". That is fine, you are entitled to your opinion. However, your arguments would have much more weight if you engaged in less name calling/ranting and more facts to bolster your argument.

It is a fact that the White House had Air Force One do a flyover of NYC. It is a fact that numerous cabinet picks were not well vetted. It is a fact that Obama embraced and bowed to dictators overseas and made disparaging comments about our country. It is a fact that Obama has no economic background, and that he helped craft the current ballooning deficit. It is a fact that his policies will cause taxes to rise significantly. It is a fact that Obama wants universal healthcare, an expensive system that has been underwhelming when done in other countries. Finally, it is also a fact that cap and trade is a tax, and all taxes are passed on to consumers.

Now, explain with facts why he is so great?

Wow...some of the crazy people come out of the woodwork on this one. No wonder the Republican party is out of touch and a bunch of losers.Arlen Spector was right when he said his former party had left him. Anyone with any sense and intelligence can see that President Barack Obama is a highly educated and well versed man who has a real grasp of the issues whether you like his policies or not. It sure beats the last 8 years which helped lead us to where Obama had to pick up. It is this kind of thinking by the Obama haters that has led to such a deep divide of opionion in our country. Thank God they are in the minority where they belong.

"America has rarely seemed to be in such steady and capable hands."

A slobbering love affair.

Get a room.

Scored 100? He has no grasp of history whatsover. He has no grasp on economics at all. He is a central planner who can find no problem that the Federal government can't solve. He is at odds with the founders of this nation and the ideas that have made it great. The people are the ones that solve problems, not the government acting as the CEO of every company. This is bound to end in disaster.

Folks, folks, folks -- The writer of this piece is a TV critic for a newspaper, for crying outloud. ...

When Obama graduated from Harvard Law School, he left town without paying 17 parking tickets. He (his campaign paid for them) finally paid them when reminded last year. He sat at a church that spewed racial hatred and crackpot conspiracy theories for years until political expediency forced him out. He hires tax cheats by the bushel and goes back on dozens of expedient campaign promises. His NY flyover explanation is laughable but will be quickly covered up. He gives up his law license but nobody cares. Michelle is forced to give up her license after only 3 years but nobody cares. Obama pushes massive waste and fraud but the press is more interested in BS.

The latest suckup scribble of the month by this Sun of the
Beast is par for the curse.

uhh,i dont uhh think uhh there uhh was too uhh much uhh about this uhh that could be uhh compared or uhh likened to uhh Reagan uhh in any uhhhh way !!

Good gravy, Zuwarik!

I guess my entire original comment didn't make it. Gee, I wonder how that happened.

...I'm not sure whether to cry for what was American exceptionalism, or just puke.

Mike D,(evidently not the Beastie Boy )

The greatness or failure of our current PRESIDENT can't be measured at this time. His policies have not yet had sufficient time to succeed or fail. That is what makes you and others like you so troubling. To inherit the sewage that was left over an eight year period and be expected to, according to your fact-spinning attack on Obama, to instantly or magically solve this mess we are in, is not realistic to say the least. But not for you subversives who want this country to fail.

As far as "bowing" to dictators, it's this type of US arrogance that has a big target on America's back. I don't know where you come from, but the world is changing. Nothing wrong with showing respect to anyone who differs from you. Maybe a little respect on the front end will save you from lying to the American people(Iraq war), proposing a constitutional amendment that was only meant to scare people to vote and by the way is STILL not on the books(marriage between a man and a woman),showing blatant racism towards people of color and meager economic means while the world looks at America with shameful eyes(Katrina). See that is a track record from the worst president in American history. Facts. Not speculation. Obama very well may live down to that horrific standard but to listen to people like you Mike D, even though he was elected, your kind doesn't even want him to have the chanmce to fail. And as for a plane flying in New York......you tell me why the folks up there are so antsy. And also tell me whose watch it was under. And tell me, did the plane hit anything Mr. Fact, Blog and Tidbit quoter? Check out that.

... There is no leader like our leader! Our leader Obama showed America and world that he is not just leader of America but also leader of world! But, he also shows compassionate side, joking with reporter. It is that hallmark that makes him beloved by all Americans!

and after his press conference he walked on water...

Give me a breaK!

Good lord. Looks like David Zerowit's career has descended into playing the mere troll.

"there was far more substance, coherence and sense of history to the president's performance than Reagan could ever imagine"--NOT!
President Obama has a great ability to talk about things, but if one carefully examines what he says, there is very little of substance and not a lot of coherence. As for a sense of history, the President's election certainly qualifies as a landmark political occurrence for many reasons, but President Obama's own discussion of historical events reveals an appalling ignorance for someone with such a touted educational background. Having been a Churchill fan since I was in grade school, and having devoured much of what has been written about him, I have never heard of the alleged Churchill incident and quote recounted during the press conference and question whether the quotation and context are entirely accurate. Moreover, although Churchill was a master of the written and spoken word, he was keenly aware that more than speeches, conferences, and agreements was necessary to defeat his country's enemies. Unfortunately, our President appears to have no better sense of history than the average politician these days.

I believe President Obama was not rattled because he understands that he is the leader of the country. If the leader is shaken up, the country would become chaotic and the citizens of the United States would question the man they elected as President. Everyone should realize that change does not happen over night!

Mack - First and foremost, I do not want this country to fail. I love this country and thank god that my family and I live here.

However, I have a set of core beliefs and principles that drive what I look for in a political candidate. I am socially liberal, but I prefer a small, well defined federal government and strong local governments. Having studied economics, I also understand that capitalism and the free market are the greatest driver of wealth ever created. Government is generally the problem, not the solution. In addition, government loses accountability to the farther it is removed from the individual. In sum, I believe in personal freedom and equality. I am guessing that you may have some beliefs as well - I would guess you are a modern version of a progressive.

Because Mr. Obama's economic policies and government philosophy run completely counter to my own, I do not support his policies. This is no more than you would support say, Sarah Palin, were she President. As for giving him a chance to see whether his policies work, why would I? They have not worked in the past, they will cost my family the fruits of my labor and he is saddling my children with debt.

What sewage did he inherit? I will grant you the Iraq war - we should have never gone into Iraq. The financial crisis and government debt? Well, Democrats (and even Mr. Obama) had a hand in that. What else is there?

It's nice to finally have a reason to be proud to be an American again.
Obama's dealing with the biggest mess this country's been in in years and he meets the challenges with poise and confidence nearly every time.

Great review, Zurawik! Don't listen to the haters.

@Mike D,

I also do not believe that big government is the cure all, but when you are operating at a historic deficit(thanks to the Iraqi war), unpopular choices will have to be made. The mere fact that government has to step in to try and solve a lot of these fiscal problems is very, very, alarming. But this is the residue of a presidency who was in lock-step with big corporations. He afforded them every loophole, every slimey opportunity to make money from consumers. The housing market was allowed to give loans to people who know they had no business getting them, but they were approved. No sober talk to steer them away from these foreclosure traps, just sign them up and let common sense be dammed. I also know that just because someone offers something to you, you don't have to take it, but homeownership was being pushed at a record pace, no matter the cost down the line.

I can't imagine being in a country with Sarah Palin at the helm. That to me is a nightmare. I would truly be scared for this country. That being said, I could not rationally critique her after 100 days if she inherited the mess that Obama did.

In your last post, I cannot say that I disagree with your position at all. But right now the patient is sick(the economy) and bitter medicine is needed to revive it. All i'm saying is just reserve judgement until a little further down the line. I want this country to get back on track so my children and one day grandchildren can enjoy a better life. I think everyone does. In this age of information, combined with slash and burn politics, every difference of opinion is not an affront. I've been guilty of that from time to time, but it seems like the republicans never, ever, compromise, never, ever take the blame, or never, ever concede a good idea from the left. Or center for that matter. Inflammatory politics at its worst.

One thing that President Obama has done over the last 100 days that is undeniable is change the image of our country. As we recently saw in his European tour or the Summit in Trinidad, he’s beginning to rekindle relationships and even begin new ones. Although the progress has ultimately been small, (whether in Cuba or France), there are positive and active steps being made in foreign policy.
With that being said, and in relation to the image of the United States, I think his opposition to torturing will only further help us rebuild relations with the international community. As Obama has said in many of his speeches, we can’t do things alone. That Wednesday Obama stated about torturing:
“it takes away a critical recruitment tool that Al Qaida and other terrorist organizations have used to try to demonize the United States and justify the killing of civilians.”
By dealing with Torture that is a violation of the Geneva conventions and international law, it allows other nations to see the U.S as a nation that holds true to its fundamental values. In a time where anti-Americanism has become both casual and insidious, referring to Obama’s speech in Strasbourg, rectifying what happened can only help us, here at home and abroad.
