CNN shines in instant coverage of Arlen Specter story
Does anyone on cable TV cover real breaking news like CNN?
Tuesday when Senator Arlen Specter dropped the bomb that he was switching to the Democratic side of the aisle, CNN was all over it. From Dana Bash (left) reporting the story on Capitol Hill to a team of reporters gathering instant reaction around Washington, while Ed Henry and Bill Schneider offered on-the-run political analysis, this is the way a major story should be covered.
A note to some of my colleagues: Let's stop blindly celebrating the ratings successes of the cymbal-clanging chimpanzees named Olbermann, Maddow, Hannity, Beck and O'Reilly on MSNBC and Fox, and pay some attention to the last real journalism being done on cable TV by the folks at CNN. They did some fast, sound and fine work again on a huge political story -- delivering the journalistic goods once again so that the sit-on-their-butt partisans on Fox and MSNBC will have something to actually talk about Tuesday night.
For the record, BloombergTV was first with the news of Specter's move at 11:57 a.m., but Bash was "first with the 'seismic' news on CNN at 12:02 p.m.," according to TV Newser.
CNN instantly went into high gear and took control of the story.

Arlen specter democrat...does it again!

Yawn. CNN has far too much of their own cymbal-clanging for me to care about your sermon. Dump the no bias no bull "commentary" - an oxymoron if ever there was - and folks like Nancy Grace and her ilk. Just so happens they've got some qualified journalists in their stable too, but so do the other networks. Come 7:30/8:00PM, though, their' all the same except for the party for which they shill.

Hahahahha!!!! CNN, responsible journalism? What a bunch of crap. O.k. fine they are all over the Specter story. Good. They get a gold star for that. But lets not go overboard. Anderson Cooper spent like 5 minutes last week chatting it up with that cute girl Erica Hill about Bristol Palin's sex life! You would never catch Ted Koppel doing that. What's worse is that I got sucked into it. I need to figure out a way to have my cable box block out CNN, Fox News and MSNBC. Channel surfing would be much more enjoyable. I agree Beck, Hannity, O'Reilly, Olberman, Maddow and the rest are "cymbal banging chimpanzees". They have all gone the way of Hearstian propagandists. CNN is not to spared from this category.

CNN torpedoed itself by doing the Celebrity-as-Newsman bit with Wolf Blitzer just as PBS did it with Jim Lehrer.
True investigative journalism depends on no-names (who can dig quietly) while news readers llike Lehrer and Blitzer report to the nation.
The Specter story is an example.

At one time, journalists used to actually dig for stories, unlike the Wolf Blitzer/Jim Lehrer style "celebrity" newspeople of today.
England has it right - "news readers" are the ones that "anchor" the broadcasts and "journalists" are the ones who actually get the stories.

Why is faster coverage in this case to be lauded? It's important when you have an emergency when lives are at stake. But Specter’s decision will have long lasting effects and reporters would put some thought into that. Sure, report on his decision, but is the "instant" reaction" people feel when you spring this development on them considered worthy news? This is closer to "gottcha journalism." What happened to thoughtful, analysis?
Why is a fast response considered "gottcha" journalism? Who are they trying to "get"? Most journalists are trying to get the story -- not any person. And they are trying to get the story first because you will attract a larger audience if you have it first. Why is that a bad thing? When I heard the momentus news of Specter's move, I didn't think, "Gee, I wonder what Bill Moyers will have to say Friday night." I wanted to know what people were saying now. I have real respect for the folks like Dana Bash who go out there and get the story. O'Reilly, Beck, Olbermann, Maddow and the others are the jackals that come down at night and feed off the carcass that the hunters brought down. Z

Thankfully Spectre has left the Republican party, but about 27 years too late! Now we need the other modern-day liberals, read socialists, like McCain, Snow, et al to leave the party as well. What will be left is a true liberal Republican party that supports free trade, smaller government, smaller taxes, religious freedom, right to worship, and SHUNS EVERYTHING SOCIALIST like Socialized Medicine. This is a great day for democracy!!!

I'm sorry you lost a bit of credibility there. CNN is much entertainment news as is FOX (the entertainment branch of the Republican party) is. If I want to watch news, I tune into PBS or the BBC. Not "Entertainment" shows that are on CNN or the FOX News Channel.
Hi Alex, If you are getting your news about America from the BBC, you are getting a very thin diet. And as much as I treasure Jim Lehrer and stand in awe of the news operation he has managed to build, PBS simply does not have the resources these daays to cover the nation in-depth on a daily basis. cnn covers process. they cover it well. it needs no hard pushing or heavy lifting.
they can't cover the economy for beans; they came totally unglued last fall when aig, citi, and lehman were imploding.
your first reaction, to cut them some slack, should be self-instructive. they can't handle heat -- so keep them out of the kitchen
CNN also covers politics extremely well. But I will agree with you about the economy. In fact, search the keywords Zurawik and Velshi, and you will see many posts and even some CNN video with me criticizing CNN's Ali Velshi and him firing back. Obviously, we disagreed about how well or poorly CNN was covering the economy last fall when the meltdown arrived. Thanks. Z

... and all 6 people watching CNN called their spouses in the CNN newsroom, telling them "Good job, honey!"...

Dana Bash is utterly pathetic. Sad that you would attempt such a long, self-serving sermon about the Communist News Network. Get out of your Beltway Mentality. That is was print is dead. Specter and CNN deserve each other. All the above are horrible journalists.

I am disgusted and over all the left wing bashing of any and all they don't like. We are all entitled to OUR opinions- not what the far left wants to ingrain in our culture. ENOUGH with the Fox, Bush , Republican, Independent and right wing bashing. Get over it and move forward. Someone has to talk and think other then far left. How long do you think the US will last with only one party? did you watch Cuba or the other no longer free countries move far left? you left wingers are brain dead- Sorros and that group supported despots - sort of the way Obama is leaning.as their puppet. What happened to all the "upper education" you people had to teach "you to think for yourselves"? NO street smarts - no common sense - you wouldn't survive long out of your ivory towers.

WOW... you liberal SOB
CNN covers real news... in what world are living in?

I long ago gave up on commercial television for any objective news. The real journalists are all gone. Besides the Internet, I use NPR and surf a variety of new channels on my satellite radio. The BBC probably has the most objective coverage.
Faux News is probably the most intellectually dishonest product in the television industry. It should be called FPN for Fascist Propoganda Network.

CNN's case of technophilia is far too severe for my tastes. If I want really fast up-to-the-minute news, I'll just use an internet aggregator, because I probably wouldn't be watching the TV at that time anyways.
Which isn't to say that some of that news will come from CNN, and I have nothing against the actual reporting of facts that have been witnessed, and so online, I will use whatever network comes up first. But when broadcasting over the TV, CNN is overly impressed with themselves, and their technology.
Also, the "cymbal-clanging chimpanzees" you mention are labeled a tad unfairly. Yes, they often yell and make divisive comments - but they're commentators. That's what they do. Anyone who calls their show journalism, or compares them to journalists, are fools. Their job is to comment on the news according to their own views, not uncover it.
