Palin scores in softball chats with Lauer, Van Susteren
As much as I hated to see the presidential campaign end last week, there was one happy thought: At least my TV screen would no longer be filled with images of Sarah Palin.
What a fool I was. She is everywhere on TV this week -- from Greta Van Susteren on Fox News, to Matt Lauer on NBC's Today. Sadly, there is even more to come tonight on CNN with Larry King.
And unlike her disastrous interviews with a couple of real journalists in CBS anchorwoman Katie Couric and ABC anchorman Charles Gibson, Palin is running circles around the people she is talking to this week, being allowed to lie left and right while portraying herself as a modest handmaiden of the Almighty willing to walk through any "door" he "opens" for her -- especially if it happens to be at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.
Lauer and Van Susteren both trekked up to Alaska to get the jump on the 10 million TV interviews she is doing this week. And of the two, Lauer is the biggest disappointment. I expected almost nothing from Van Susteren, who defines bottom feeding both in subject matter and approach to news on cable TV.
But Lauer was such a wimp -- almost as obsequious as the smarmy Sean Hannity in the bended-knees interview the Fox talk show host did with Palin during the election. One of Lauer's lowest moments came when he asked Palin if she felt that Couric had somehow been "unfair" in the questions she asked.
Here's the excerpt:
LAUER: But you didn't think the (Katie Couric) interview was unfair? I mean, the questions were fairly straightforward, weren't they?
PALIN: Sure. Yeah. But, you know, questions about, well, you know, "What do you read up there in Alaska?" To me that was a little bit annoying. Because I'm like, what do you mean, what do I read in Alaska? I read the same things that you guys read in New York -- and there in LA and in Washington state. What do you mean what I read up there? But anyway, just-- just some annoyance, that certainly I'm sure showed through.
Couric didn't say what do you read "up there in Alaska" -- as if it's another planet. She asked Palin what newspapers and magazines she reads. Period. I saw the interview and read the transcript.
And it was devastating that this so-called journalism major couldn't name one newspaper or magazine that she read -- not one.
And now Palin twists Couric's words to make herself look less ignorant, and Lauer lets her run with it.
He should be ashamed -- as should his co-host Meredith Vieira who marveled at how "candid" Palin was during the interview when she and Lauer talked between segments about the first part of the anchorman's conversation with the governor. I'll tell you this, neither Lauer nor Vieira will ever be confused with Couric when it comes to being a journalist and skilled interviewer.
I will say no more about Van Susteren's interview. It speaks for itself. Here is how this craven politician who can't leave the limelight alone was allowed to characterize her political decision-making process for Fox viewers:
"Putting my life in my creator's hands -- this is what I always do," Palin said. "I'm like, OK, God, if there is an open door for me somewhere, this is what I always pray. I'm like, don't let me miss the open door ... And if there is an open door in '12 or four years later, and if it is something that is going to be good for my family, for my state, for my nation, an opportunity for me, then I'll plow through that door."
All that was missing on the Fox Channel was a choir of heavenly angels breaking into a song of rapture.
It was a moment so falsely pious and saccharine that I suspect not even Tina Fey and Saturday Night Live could hit the right notes of satire. It reminded me of radio broadcasts from the 1920s with the new breed of radio evangelists like Aimee Semple McPherson -- or maybe the TV cable ministries of folks like Jim and Tammy Faye Baker in the 1980s.
Whatever it was, it sure as heck had nothing to do with journalism. Let's hope Larry King and Wolf Blitzer and all the others do better today with this one-time candidate who should be hanging her head in shame for dragging down the Republican ticket the way poll after poll says she did.
But that's not Palin's style, is it?
And I'm not betting the TV interviewers today will do any better than Lauer and van Susteren.

Although its only been a week since election night, i can't help but wonder what the future holds for female presidential candidates in the future. Has Sarah Palin's bid for vice president made the country (generally) more or less comfortable with the idea of a female candidate for president. You're right Z, Palin did bombard t.v. and computer screens, but was it overall positive? Moreover did Clinton's bid for presidency contribute to the image of females in power positively or negatively? it's hard to say, but this election year has definetely provided a lot of material in discussing the discourse of females in politics and power positions.

Z We get it! You hate republicans! It's ok, it's ok. They will be gone soon and the MSM will ignore the ones that speak up once the new leader of the Civilian National Security Force ( "We cannot continue to rely only on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives that we've set," Obama said in July. "We've got to have a civilian national security force that's just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded.") takes office in January. Oh, and if you are one of those who think he will regain his freedoms lost during the Bush administration. I hope the new force doesn't put a crimp in that delusion.
Peace Brother!

Mocking someone wgo trusts in God? You must be a liberal left anti - MerryChristmas person who is just plain too jealous to see that Sarah Palin is a star. She came out of the minor leagues of politics and did ok for her first time in the bigs. I think she will be a hot item in the future whether it will be 2012 or later. I guess your boy Obama knew everything about anything. Without cue cards he is nothing to listen too. Now I am stuck listening to his rhetoric for four years. Besides who listens to 1920's radio evangelists besides geeks like you. Get your jabs in now, while you can because Sarah is coming back. Amen!

Well, the election is over... I think these interviews were to get a sense of who the real Palin is rather than policy debates.
If she runs for office President in 2012, then sure, let her get some hard questions.
I recommend she don't though. She'll get crushed.

You are an absolute moron. Obvoiusly, Greta Van Susteran is a much smarter and well versed person than you can ever hope to be. If you don't like Sarah, turn off the TV. That's what Sarah supporters do when MSM starts bashing her. She will be back, so deal. Get over it.
Posted by: C Foster | November 11, 2008 8:19 PM
This wasn't a campaign interview to fire questions at her about the cost of tea in China, it was just an interview to get her take on the campaign and what she thought about certain things. Get a grip, she isn't running for something now. If many people were accusing you of something you didn't do and an interviewer asked your side of it would'nt you give it. Criminy, It wasn't a gotcha interview.

She done more than McCain did.
Posted by: janis | November 11, 2008 8:28 PM
Hang on, hang on, I have to take a breath here, laughing so hard. Did you read the Rasmussen poll, with 91 percent of GOP voters having a favorable view of Palin, with 67ish percent having a very favorable view? If she lost votes, they weren't GOP ones.
And did you watch the softball "interviews" of the men who will actually inhabit the White House and wield power over more than the state of Alaska?
Oh, Katie grilled Sarah, but she didn't blink when Joe Biden told her that FDR went on TV in 1929 after the stock-market crash. Watch the video. Not. a. blink.
And Greta's interview was a lot more journalism than Bill O'Reilly peddling anonymous rumors.
Besides, there is no mainstream-media journalism anymore. It didn't just die this year, it committed suicide. Sing a song, stick a fork in it, it's done.
Palin, though, will likely be back.

Sarah Palin talks like a poorly spoken teenager. She says "like" over and over again in her speech, uses fragments in the way she speaks and sounds perpetually confused and inattentive in the process. I think she is an incredibly poor example for America.

I just watched the Matt Lauer interview this evening on Extra, with Sara Palin explaining the rumors about her wardrobe, and the very next segment was about the dress Michelle Obama chose to wear to the White House today and telling about the "DESIGNER" that designed the dress for her. The question should be "Are you smarter than a Reporter????

David, It's high time to chill out. Your team won. You should be taking a victory lap, not auditioning to take Alec Baldwin's place as the master of rage and viciousness. Relax. Call your favorite mental health practitioner and make an appointment. When calling to make that appointment, tell them you have PDS, and you'll go to the top of the list.
Posted by: Patricia | November 11, 2008 8:32 PM
Looks like that person is not as good as Sarah Palin and doesn`t want Her to win anything.
Posted by: janice | November 11, 2008 8:33 PM
David, you should have read Palin's biography, as should Couric. Long before Palin ran with McCain for VP, her family told how Sarah Palin as a child read every newspaper she could get her hands on. Her sister related how Sarah would read every paper from the first corner to the last page bottom corner, devouring every word.
Turns out that reading newspapers has been a lifelong habit of Palin's.
Now, if Couric had taken the time to read the biography of Sarah Palin, already in print since she became the Governor of Alaska, Couric could have had some interesting questions.
For instance, Couric could have asked, "Why did you start reading newspapers when you were a child? And what newspapers were in your home when you were a child? Did you read those in the library or buy others? What impressed you in reading those newspapers in your youth? How do you think reading the newspapers shaped your future political and public service career?"
See, those are interesting questions that relate to personality, motivation, interests. And it shows that the interviewer has done some homework.
I'll bet Couric read Obama's two biographies.
Now, David, what have you read?

I only saw clips of van Susteren but I thought it was appropriate for the audience. The quote on open doors wasn't a bit saccharine. It's all in the eye of the beholder.
Her interview with Lauer was terrific. I loved the part in their Wasilla kitchen.
Zurawik is entitled to his opinion, but I am entitled to mine. And the type interview he obviously prefers has no appeal to me.

Do I think he sounds un-happy? I'd bet he does not know what happiness is.
He sounds envious to the point he has to run her down. I am sure in a country that is trying to chase God out of everything from schools to Christmas, Sarah Palin sounds like she is not a part of their world, and she is not. Only someone else with a relationship with the Lord would understand what she is talking about when she speaks about living according to the leading of the Lord.
I would say that Mr. Zurawick feels rather hopeless and lonely deep in the night alone with his thoughts.
She is a real person, unlike the cheap plastic immoral group in Washington DC that are either Godless, or ashamed to speak truth, whether it is about God or what is right or needed in this Country.

Or Obama saying Iran is a small country and not a real threat, or Biden wanting to turn Iraq into three sections or Obama against the surge.. Obama uses a teleprompter for everything. The guy's resume is about 140 days in the senate with no executive experience. Of course he's been campaigning for 2 years, so I hope he would be good at it , by now. Sarah Palin is favorable to Republicans but most Independents see right through her, it is unlikely she will win a national election anytime in the future.
Some of you are blinded by the fact that she is Christian, just like many people were when George W. Bush ran in 2000 and 2004.
Eight years later we are in an unauthorized war in Iraq, still haven't captured Osama Bin-Laden, New Orleans suffered greatly, and our economy is doing terrible.
Did any of you who support her actually listen to the Katie Couric interview?

I, too, watched the Couric interview when she asked Palin about which newspapers she read and I remember thinking at the time that Palin saw right through the question. It wasn't about any sincere interest in what she read--Couric seemed to be implying that Alaska is isolated and that Palin's world view was naive and uninformed. Palin skipped the BS and went straight to the point, which was Alaska gets all the newspapers that everybody else does and that Palin reads them. By the way, your article comes across really snotty. Which seems to be the tone du jour of most columns these days.

Such a sad little guy. You might be 300 lbs, but you are so small mentally. Who abused you? Certainly Sarah did not, but by your rantings, one might think so.
I feel sorry for you in that you are sooo jealous that Sarah has God to lean on and direct her paths. Jesus gives you the same opportunity, if only you were wise enough to accept it.
Being a Carolina Panther fan, I have to agree with the Panther's post in that you surely are a jerk, among other things that I'll not say. Wise up, this is not MoveOn.org. People here actually have a mind of their own.

Katie Couric is a "Junior Male" and the guy commenting on the Greta/Palin interviews sounds like he has no idea what real woman think or act, anymore than "Junior Male's"do. Men don't understand that real woman are equal and different from men, as well as Jr. Males. This is also a typical prejudice in the field of medicine in the United States when people discuss the differences between woman physicians, 'junior male' female physicians and the male physicians.

This guy is a no-body or at least he is to me. I never heard of him and evidently the only way for him to make himself known and get attention is to ridicule Sarah Palin and Greta. Well, I don't think he wants to know what we all think of him - we really can't say on here. Loved your interviews from Alaska, Greta.

I find Gov. Palin to be refreshing and the more I see her in her; the more I like her. Tell me how many interviews has Katie Couric done where she has asked people what newspapers or magazines that they read. It was a degrading question trying to say that someone from Alaska couldn't possible be educated enough to run for office.

I never cease to be amazed at the hateful mean things that proceed from the mouths of "peace, love, and equality" liberals. They want "freedom of...." for themselves, but NOT for anyone that thinks differently. They bash, trash, and ridicule everyone else. I really don't hear so called "conservatives" do that. Many people in this time and place in history have perpetuated exchanging the truth for a lie. What is right is wrong ... what is wrong is right. We do reap what we sow...someday.

Liberals do not know how to tell the truth that is why it is so easy for them to make fun of people of faith. It will take someone like Sarah Palin to get this country back on track after the dems have destroyed it!

Great special interview with Sarah Palin. A real person in a world of faux and fools. In this country, most can barely read or just don't. Who needs polished B.S. artists like Bidon. A shining example of the way we all once were. She is no fake and certainly no fool.

It sounds like you are worried about people liking Sarah and trying to run her down so she won't be considered for 2012. She has more experience, common sense, and values that Obama. None of her friends are radical terrorists and if she runs in 2012 I will certainly vote for her. What a shame that more impartial reporting and interviews weren't conducted before the election. The negative press she got was nothing short of disgusting, and from the trash included in your article, it obviously hasn't ended yet. I assume that you think Gov. Palin is chasing these people down to get them to interview her...They couldn't possibly be doing them because she's news now and will continue to be in the future. IMO you'd do better sticking with limiting your "critic" duties to whether or not SNL was funny last week.

Mr. Zurawik, your article about Governor Palin is so biased and way out in left field and the touting of Ms. Couric and Charles Gibson as 'real' journalists is enough to make me spit up - or laugh ! A lot of people in this country love Sarah Palin and now that she is out of the limelight, perhaps the MSM is getting that. You need to pull your left wing head out of your ass and listen to what the people who don't live on the east coast think of her, not only as a politician but as a private citizen. She is a western woman who clearly doesn't fit your standards of the eastern cocktail elite circuit. You need to take a vacation, perhaps somewhere west of the rockies.

I have discussions frequently with people, such as David Zurawik, who
Mostly hate people if they believe in God. I generally use the opposite argument...."They believe ....." (which is a belief, al beit not in a God, but actually in opposition to God...They aren't mad if one believes in Santa Claus, or the tooth ferry) It's the very argument they are opposing. Of course they don't want to hear it.
I'm proud of Sarah Palin. My 23 year old daughter and I discuss the possibilities for her future. I understand at 54, there is still a lot of prejudice and sexism. She is a College Senior in California and we live in Texas. She's see's the opposition even in California. I encourage my daughter that she can be more than what others think she can be. We all need to have hope and I believe, contrary to what's taught in Sociology at schools of higher education, that Jesus, of whom the New Testament Bible is about, has given women freedom and positition of prominence that were not kin to the Jewish and Gentile nations 2000 years ago.
Go GRETA !!!!!! Great and indepth story of Sarah Palin. Please keep it up. My family love watching you and hearing your objectivity and fairness.

It is alot different running for federal office than a state office. I think Gov. Palin would be a much better Presedent than obama. I think that if the drive by news would have given McCain Pailin the same treatment they gave Obama things would have been different. ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, MSNBC, Allthey did was ask +easy Questions of him. Now several have asked who is this Obama What do we know about him well its a little late to ask that now. Good luck Sarah you will do a very good job.

I;m sorry, but as much as I would like to see a qualified woman in the highest eschelon of our government, and while I think it's wonderful that she can speak of her faith, Sarah Palin sounds like an unintelligent, blithering idiot. I am embarrassed for her. If she reads newspapers every day, she certainly doesn't retain what she reads.
Posted by: Roberta | November 11, 2008 11:48 PM
Were Obama or Biden ever asked what the Clinton Doctrine was? Did any journalist ask Obama, Biden or McCain what magazines or publications they read? NO! This was an overt attempt to marginalize Gov.Sarah Palin, you could feel the condesention. I think she was as shocked at that question as I was when I heard it. There was the feeling that she couldn't possibly be reading the same things as other "intelligent" people in the lower 48 were reading. I think she did well in spite of the circumstances. Greta is a great journalist!! She is honest and checks things out to see if they're true. I'll pray for Mr. Z, he's someone's son,and being a Mom myself I feel for his mother.

Yes, Z is a very unhappy man. One has to wonder what could make him have so much hate for a women that he doesn't even know. It can only be the things that she believes in. How do we get to a point where we "hate" people for what they believe. I don't Hate Z for his beliefs and don't see why he can't return the same courtesy to Sarah Palin and anyone else with her ideals. That, to me, is the biggest difference between Republicans and Democrats. The Dems have no tolerance for a differing view and can only try to destroy that person. Sad really.

For a journalist this article was the equivalent of listening to the Al Sharpton show. Hate, based on opinion, and nothing to explain why you've come to that decision besides that you dislike her. What happened to the journalists that had any integrity? Katie Couric and Charles Gibson are liberals as well as yourself, which makes what you wrote essentially meaningless as in you just bashed on people who liked Palin and praised those who made her look bad, clearly bias. Sean Hannity is a million times more credible than you are, and from reading your posts maybe you should leave Palin alone, because this article is a awful way of just expressing your biased argument. I'm amazed you're a journalist.

You are the typical liberal. You can't say well I disagree or don't like something or someone and let it go at that. Liberals are unable to express themselves unless their statement contains an insult about the person's appearance, speech or some other insult. You must include an insult.
Let me tell you Dave Z. You have the right to say what you want because members of my family, including me, and millions of others have fought for your rights and some gave their life for you. David who?
One of the reasons we listen and watch Greta Van Susteren is because she is refreshingly straight forward in her interviews, no hidden agenda, no animosity just forward and is able to get to the facts of the story…it does not matter what story Ms. Van Susteren covers it is in-depth and factual. Actually we get a kick out of her insatiable curiosity and prosecutorial- like questions…We like to make our own opinions not just be led by bias reporting and this is what Great Wire gives us…
As for David Zurawik, he is just a TV critic regardless of his academic credits, and suffers from narcissism and a warped identity crisis…
Greta, stay with us and keep up your excellent reporting and thank you

I'm not going to waste my energy denigrating you, Mr. Z because outside of the Baltimore area you've never been heard of.

David, You were RIGHT ON in this article. I was shocked Lauer let Palin get away with, not "twisting" Courics words but down right LYING about Courics question.
As for Greta's interview, look at the source, no one at Fox News is worth talking about including Greta - who couldn't interview her way out of a wood shed.
I doubt Blitzer or King, esp. King, are going to ask Palin any question of substance.
Seriously, someone needs to tell Palin the election is OVER - the "kids in pajamas got dressed, went to the polls and voted McCain/Palin and their LIES right out of the White House."
Then, someone needs to explain to the dimwhit ... errr Palin that the time for interviews was 2 months ago while she was being SEQUESTERED.

Is this crazy town or something? All of these people are defending Sarah Palin? There's a reason people want to see her go through a tough interview. If she had handled any of her previous tough interviews well, then everyone would keep these interviews a pass. But because she did, because she couldn't coherently answer a single question, there's reason to wonder if she has anything going on up in her brain.

The idea that democrats are so far left that they are anti God is the most ridiculous notion. Sarah Palin's "record" as a coniving, spiteful, power-hungry individual who will take down anyone in her way just to get what she wants, is definitely not the idea of the christian values I was taught. People like Palin stand behind their religion as a cover to manouver their way around issues. The hatred she spread amongst her supporters during the pres election was appalling. Now she wants people to believe she is criticized for being a christian? I am a independent who followed the campaign from start to finish. Every rally she or McCain held honestly reminded me of a supremisist/KKK rally. Believe me, I have witnesses those too living in North Carolina for 30 years. They call themselves christians, as well. I don't believe America has a problem with Palin because she expresses God's name in every other sentence she makes. Their problem is that she is extremely unprepared and clueless on every issue and blames others for her "blunders". I speak against anyone who denounces God, but some Americans don't believe in God and that's their right. They will come before their own judgement day, and we the people won't have a say.

The thought of Sarah Palin as the president of US is more worrisome than the thought of Armegeddon. I know I am exaggerating, but seriously, that notion is extremely terrifying. Not that she is a woman, but listening to Palin talk (ramble) is like listening to a drill or powersaw for hours. All of her sentences run together and I can never catch any substance to what she is saying. "Dontcha know", "heckuva", "darn tootin'" is really annoying! Please America lets focus on a choice who can intrigue people and make a difference all at the same time. The woman is just not that intelligent, no ifs ands or buts. There are so many intelligent women in this country who deserve the presidency far more than she, even she knows that. She is addicted to power--"Georgia Bush"!!!

Sarah Palin would be a powerful force in politics if she actually had any credentials. She has gained support and love of so many, based on not much more than being attractive and incredibly charismatic.
I have no doubt that she will continue to appear on TV for 4 years, engaged in softball type situations that sell Sarah the human being more than Sarah, the person who has the education and knowledge to make the important decisions for our country.
She is, for better or worse, an extension of our reality show celebrity decade.
The ones who love her are not going to change their mind based on proof of her misstatements, or the little things like the fact that she doesn't know or care about world affairs.
Sarah is here to stay...we'll just have to see where "here" is exactly.
Posted by: Adam Annapolis | November 12, 2008 8:53 AM
Regardless of who you support, I can't believe people object to public officials being subjected to tough questions. What's wrong with being accountable?
Katie asked a simple question about what she read to keep herself informed. It's not rocket science. I remember a similar question being asked to Bill Clinton many years ago and he mentioned specific writers, some of which were conservative and critical of him.
I suspect that Palin doesn't want to admit that she gets her news from the MSM, the same group of people that her campaign was quick to criticize.

People, people....you read this person's column...you know the paper he writes for... the way to deal with hate-filled people like him is to simply ignore them. P.S. I certainly did not vote for Barack Obama but I as our incoming President - - I send him my prayers to lead this great nation forward.

Sarah Palin came on the scene as a relatively unknown. We got to see and hear some of the real things she has accomplished. They were consistently smudged(a kind word) with media opinions. I am happy to see more and more of Sarah in the media. I think she has and will do service to all of us. The media objected to the fact that she was an unknown. Well Mr. Media lets get her known and than we can make intelligent decisions about her qualifications and experience. Keep those interviews coming. You on the other hand need to go back to journalism school to learn to report not write a fictional novel.

Softball interviews??
When you mention Charles Gibson and Katie Couric, do yourself a favor and pull the transcripts of when they interviewed Barack Obama.
All during his candidacy, Obama got softball interviews by all the "real" journalists. PERIOD.
These WERE ALL the questions Charlie Gibson asked Obama after winning the nomination.
How does it feel to break a glass ceiling?
How does it feel to “win”?
How does your family feel about your “winning” breaking a glass ceiling?
Who will be your VP?
Should you choose Hillary Clinton as VP?
Will you accept public finance?
What issues is your campaign about?
Will you visit Iraq?
Will you debate McCain at a town hall?
What did you think of your competitor’s [Clinton] speech?
These are ONLY SOME of the questions Gibson asked Palin in their interview:
Do you believe the United States should try to restore Georgian sovereignty over South Ossetia and Abkhazia?
Would you favor putting Georgia and Ukraine in NATO?
And under the NATO treaty, wouldn't we then have to go to war if Russia went into Georgia?
Do you consider a nuclear Iran to be an existential threat to Israel?
So what should we do about a nuclear Iran?
What if Israel decided it felt threatened and needed to take out the Iranian nuclear facilities?
Do you agree with the Bush doctrine?
Do we have the right to be making cross-border attacks into Pakistan from Afghanistan, with or without the approval of the Pakistani government?
Is America fighting a holy war? [Gibson misquoted Palin]
Do you have enough qualifications for the job you’re seeking?
Specifically have you visited foreign countries and met foreign leaders?
Also if the journalists felt the need to dig in Palin's trash can up in Alaska, why wasn't it mentioned that Obama violated ethics laws for collecting speaking fees as an elected official. Maybe people should haved looked at his tax returns, too.

Palin's comment where she changed Couric's question about what newspapers she read to falsely include "..up there in Alaska" just says it all.
It's revisionist history that I'm sure by now she fully believes. Anything to advance the myth of poor, poor little Sarah--everything got all twisted and everyone was out to get her.
I'll say one other thing: if she thinks the media was slanted against her and the republicans, she sure as heck wasn't watching much CNN.

I love it when you post commentary like this...just to read the reader responses!
Obviously a blog is not meant to be 'unbiased' and you are free to state you opinions without an editor chopping it up. Readers should read and watch and form their own opinions, and try not to get so angry about somebody else's opinion.
Posted by: JJinpigtown | November 12, 2008 9:48 AM
It's not hard to see the difference between the Dem and Rep Responses.
Reps. should try not to be so angry, things have changed, and
the changes will probaly be as big as when Ronald Reagan took office, Just in a different direction.
Say, more like Roosevelt, you were happy then and as a Dem I am estatic Now.

I can't believe these comments. I'm ashamed for each and every one of you so-called Christians. "Christian" means believer in Christ, follower of Christ. Do you really think Jesus would use such language or put such sentiments in print? Talk about haters! And what about turning the other cheek? And do any of you guys proof-read your comments, or are you just a bunch of illiterate, dumb jerks? I don't know of anyone who "hates" Ms. Palin but I know a lot of people, mostly women, who sincerely wish she would either learn how to speak correctly or just shut up. If she would just simply answer a question and not go on and on and on and on and . . . she would certainly appear to be smarter than she does right now to most of us. Why don't you LISTEN to her, look for some SUBSTANCE in what she says, try to be OBJECTIVE about her - you might see and hear what the rest of us do. Being Christian and having "values" is great, but being blinded by those "values" and blindly clinging to the notion that you're persecuted because you are Christian and someone like Palin will save you is just plain stupid. The writer of this article was probably far to the left - but you guys appear to be even further to the right, on the fringes even.

In the year 2012, Sarah Palin will be President of the United States. And this Z dude will be out of a job and standing in the unemployment line. Karma's gonna get you, Z.

It's pretty obvious from your article that not only are you anti-Palin, but pro-Obama. Man...talk about hoping someone's face would disappear from the TV screen; I didn't turn TV on for 2 days after the disasterous results of the election because I didn't want to see his face or hear his voice. Looks like those of us who felt that way are stuck for 4 years of his continual smirks. I can't help wonder how long it will be before Rev Wright spends a night in the Lincoln bedroom.

David, "lie left and right." How in the world would you even know that? The most classless thing a person can do is call another a "liar." And, too bad for you (although it will give you tons of negative fodder to rant about), Palin will be back. She is a genuine and caring person - unlike you. You're just a smear-monger.
Posted by: Marcellina | November 12, 2008 11:02 AM
I agree one hundred percent. She is the poorest example of a woman and a leader. And the thought that people still support her after some the things she has said and done is amazing. Get your head out of your a** people she is bad new for women, minorities and the country.
Posted by: tadd | November 12, 2008 11:13 AM
This woman has given more interviews in the last week than she did throughout the campaign. Big deal if she can hold her own in the cotton candy league of journalism. We already know she can't handle questions regarding real issues. Nothing to see here...move along.
Posted by: Kat | November 12, 2008 11:14 AM
attack Sarah Palin if you must, but at least pretend to be a journalist. This piece is filled with more visceral hatred than one person should be allowed -- hate not only towards Republicans and Gov. Palin but God as well. Why so bitter? And can't you do any better than ad hominem attacks?
Posted by: JC | November 12, 2008 11:21 AM
So many media people like you and Keith Olberman remind me of why I'm glad high school finally ended. Small minds talk about people. Great minds talk about ideas. I hope most of us who just shake our heads at the mean-girls and mean -girly-boys like you, will be thinking of ways to rescue our poor country from such a juvenile media--I know--we won't buy newspapers. Oops. I guess that's already working. Good luck working for the Daily Titanic.
Posted by: Kate | November 12, 2008 11:22 AM
Why do you continue to unfairly smear and attack Sarah Palin? Your guy won and you write this article to continue to divide the country. Sarah Palin says she will do everything she can to help Barack Obama, and Obama conveys for all Americans to work together. Why do you insist on spreading these immature bullish lies?
Posted by: Tom | November 12, 2008 11:29 AM
Davey, perhaps you can drag yourself away from your chatroom friends or the poster of Obama on the ceiling above your bed long enough to write something impartial sometime....but then the Sun may be worth more than litter box filler then.
You are a sad, lonely, pathetic and miserable excuse for a man.
Hope you have a real 'hot' time after you leave Earth.....LOSER!!

David - I notice that Palin/McCain got 37% of the vote in Maryland, as they did in some other states. Let me guess the states where your Palin-lover respondents obviously come from. Only thing worse than a poor loser is a poor loser that can't understand or accept the facts. Bring Palin on in 2012, betcha she gets less than 37%.

No one in the media wanted to acknowledge that Alaska is the only state at the moment where the economy is still growing (jobs, etc).
Compare that to Obama's former state senate district.
Compare that to Michigan's economy (worst in the U.S.) (Democrat Female Governor)

Zurawik = 1 more snobby liberal who knows what's best for the world. And he is one more reason, along with his colleague and resident hater Susan Reimer, that the Baltimore Sun newspaper is plummeting in subscriptions, readership, and credibility.

I'm still surprised that no one mentions Sarah Palin's association with the "New Apostolic Reformation" movement. She's a spiritual warrior for a group that intends on infiltrating the highest positions of media, arts, finance, government, schools, family, and church. Not just in this nation, but many nations. Moderate Republicans need to take a look where their party is going.

Greta: Thank you for the interview.
ncmom: I don't think she is as transparent (can see through her) as you might imply. The Louisiana problems were perpetuated by the Democrat-run local government who had let the area run down and had not heeded warnings regarding that. The transparencies were totally apparent when it comes to MSM (admission from The Washington Post) and the horrible behavior to anyone who has different ideas from the liberal minded. We have the same rights to believe what we believe as does the left of this country, but we are not allowed to voice them without being labeled fanatics. People do not deserve to be torn apart because they do not fall into what you have defined as rational. Greta had every right to allow her to hit back against the gossip - like it or not.

Wow - you sound so bias and hateful! Hmmm....where have we heard this before? Oh yes, that's the mainstream media all throughout the election!
Personally, I think you must have something within yourself that feels threatened by Sarah Palin. You'll have to be the one who does the soul searching to figure out what it is. Could it possibly be her stance on moral issues? Your bias show through in very unattractive ways.

It is fascinating to read the comments from both sides of the argument. The rabid left and right.
I certainly don't agree with Z. What a pot full of venom he wrote. He sounds like the "women" from NOW, so afraid to face the fact that women can have power and strength and still fill the God given rolls of mother and wife. That is what a woman can do!
I am somewhat ashamed of the rabid right .... when you are in the right you don't need to tear the wrong down, that takes you down to their level.
It was my prayer that the hard questions would have been asked of Pres Elect during the campaign..... they weren't, especially by the fan club masquerading as journalist that he kept close to him. What a sad story that is.....
I too will pray for our new president when he takes office.... I pray that his intent will not be the evil I glimpsed behind the smoke and mirrors of his rhetoric. Don't like the company he was keeping.
I like Sarah Palin because she came off as real and straight forward. I believe it wasn't her that kept the ticket down.... don't have much confidence in McCain.... In Politics too long. Couldn't keep his intent straight, his opinions kept changing. Palin was a refreshing change from the twisted non answers of the two presidential candidates.
Hope the USA will still be "the land of the free and the home of the brave" at the end of 4 years..... In God we trust!

At the most potentially disastrous time for our nation's history, all that we seem to be able to do is to throw barbs at each other and at the recent presidential candidates. Palin cannot and will not play any part in the resolution of the imediate problems confronting our nation. What she did or did not do for McCain's campaign is a non issue at this time. No matter the nature of your affiliation, we have Obama-Biden to whom we must support. If they fail, we all fail. "If we don't hang together, we'll most certainly hang separately". Obama has been characterized, even by his most severe critics, as being an intelligent, courageous, pragmatic individual. If there is anyone more capable of getting us out of the horrendous mess that we're in, please, please bring him or her to the fray. But as I suspect, the silence on this matter will be deafening.

Congrats on the only SANE comment of this thread. The rest are all from Greta's RW hate blog. You can tell by the spelling and syntax errors, as well as the number who type in all caps. Not to mention all the personal attacks on the author.
If you ever watch Greta's show, I say you can't miss the last segment. Her e-poll always comes up the same: the RW position - on whatever question - is ALWAYS at least 87% - sometimes 99%!
You are correct in that Independents and moderates saw through her. She is a graduate of the GOPAC stealth candidate training course, so it's fitting that she wrapped herself in the flag and carried a cross & bible - but spewed nothing but HATE to her adoring crowds, whipping them up into a murderous frenzy. There's a clip on YouTube where people in the crowd yelled "KILL the nigger" and "string him up!"
That REALLY didn't play in the Philly 'burbs, or Northern Virginia, Indy, Denver, Boulder, Vegas, etc. Most city and suburban voters found her, and the faux pious HATRED she spewed, SCARY. After 8 years in BushWorld, we in the reality-based community want a president that is SMARTER than we are, not just someone we want to have a beer (or a prayer) with!
Bill Maher: Polls say that 80% of Republicans want Palin at the top of their party.
Paul Begala: 100% of Democrats want the same!
;o)
P.S. All you hateful bible-thumpers, upthread, are going to spend eternity in Hell!

And when Joe Biden said that the important 3-letter word was J-O-B-S, I bet you thought he was a genius! Take a look at yourself, you beltway snob! You, like many Democrats, feared her impact on Obama, and came out with fangs bared. What happened to Palin before the election had nothing to do with journalism, either. You're proof.

I am glad to see Sarah on television telling her story vs. the twisted media making up silly stories like; she didn't know Africa was a state, making judgements about the close she was given to wear and other items. Sarah is a bright, intelligent, hard working mother (and soon to be grandmother) who should be given the same respect and truthful reporting of any candidate. I think the Gibson and Couric interviews were far from journalism. As a recruiter, who also interviews candidates everyday (just not on camera) if I ever treated a candidate the way they did I should be fired. As they should be. Since I don't have the power to get them fired. I will just refuse to watch them. Gibson and Couric are off my list for good. The media does owe her a fair shake and most people (even Obama) supports agree. America is a great country that was built on treating people fairly and being innocent until proven guilty. I don't know why Sarah wasn't given this basic right, but she has my support. I hope she continues to lead Alaska and build her political knowledge and network to do great things in the future.
As for the media, they should all be fired and go back to journalism school. Learn how to treat people fairly, have an opinion (its an American right), but report the truth and the facts, remember to check the facts before you report them this is important to do in elections, in trial and in any story you report and focus on the real issues. Little of this was done in this election. And when was Obama's last interview? Give him credit for O'Reilly, but didn't see any others in the last several months....
God Bless us all, our media is in worse shape than our economy!

Regardless of Palin's questionable intelligence and personal qualities, it's hard to imagine anyone so polarizing could be good for our country. This probably doesn't matter to some of the respondents, because it's obvious they aren't interested in "coming together" or supporting our new President. Yep folks, like it or not we have a new President, and his name isn't Caribou Barbie!

Hi Z:
You are correct that Katie never appended the "up there in Alaska" portion to her question.
You are incorrect in summarizing Gov. Palin's answer, however. True, she didn't specify which particular newspapers, magazines, or research outlet she subscribes to, but she did say something to the effect, all the ones people normally read.
Z, you minimize yourself when you conclude that she was incapable of naming the names of each and every publication. She answered a general question with an equally general rejoinder. Nothing wrong with that.
Hello Captain American: Thanks for the comment, but all she had to do is name one. I say to you, "Captain America, what newspapers or magazines do you read?" And you say, "The Wall Street Journal and Time." You don't says, "All the same ones everybody else reads." Who says that except somebody who is lying? What kind of car do you drive? Oh, the same kind everybody drives. That's a totally nuts answer. And it's the kind of answer that lead the more thoughtful folks in the GOP like Colin Powell to bail on the ticket saying she is not qualified. Z

Wow this is the very first blog that I have seen that has so many saying positive things for Palin. This must be some of the 12,000 that went to her rallies. There is nothing that can be said about the soft ball interview with Lauer that they will not take offense to. The facts are the interviews that counted for something during the campaign she blew. No excuses just the fact that this woman had little knowledge of national politics, foreign affairs and could not answer basic questions without winging out to who knows where but we all knew why she did not have an intelligent answer. She could not even answer the simple question when asked what newspapers do you read. Please if she choked on that question was else is left?
Hi Linda, Thanks for the perspective. Z
Posted by: linda | November 12, 2008 6:35 PM
Governor Palin appears to be a modern computer-literate woman, I suspect that she gets most of her news via the Google or Yahoo news-summaries and one or more local hard-copy Alaskan papers. The Governor says she was offended by the "What newspapers do you read?" question in the Couric interview -- compare this with Senator Biden's "Is this a joke?" response to another interviewer when he was offended.
Posted by: Watchbird | November 12, 2008 7:41 PM
I agree 100% with you Zurawick. It has nothing to do with "hating'republicans." Sarah Palin was no where near ready for the national stage. If this is who the republicans really wanted, they should have taken the entire summer to school Palin so that she would be ready. At the very least they should have made sure she knew what the VP job according to the Constitution was about. She was the gift that just kept giving. I was trained that the way you pratice is what you will do in the real event. I don't know about anyone else, but I would not be comfortable with her answering a world leader with the phrase, "You betcha!" She needs to go bone up on world events, politics, and how to do an interview. I still can't follow a single sentence she says.
Posted by: Kayebradley | November 12, 2008 8:06 PM
Sarah Palin needs to do a couple of things before she comes back on the scene.
1. Hire someone to remake her. She needs serious help doing her interviews.
2. Stop doing powder puff pieces and go on the Bill O'Reilly show, Meet the Press and This Week. Answer tough questions. I could care less what Piper thinks.
3. STUDY the Couric interview. Enough said.
4. STOP BLAMING THE MEDIA. I am an ordained Minister. When God looked for fault, He ALWAYS started with His house first. Stop blaming everyone for your poor showing. Go back to number 3. That was ALL PALIN.
Ignorance is not knowing something. You can do something about ignorance. Stupidity is you knew the inforrnation and did the opposite. I don't believe she is stupid. Just ignorant.
Posted by: Kayebradley | November 12, 2008 8:27 PM
Great article! I'm glad you see what I see, and what the millions who voted for Obama see. She was not ready for the national stage. She won't be ready in a hundred years. Her politics is not the direction this country is going. Nov. 4 was proof of that.

Well David, I read through your article looking for some substance - no dice. Just recycled hard-left vitriol. Anyway, keep trying to convince yourself, if it makes you happy. Just don't expect Sarah to go away. Obama should have wiped the floor, given the liberal media's almost complete bias against conservatives, the way George Bush abandoned Republican small-government values, and the terrible economic news. Yet Sarah and the that other guy still took 47% of the vote! Get used to it - she will be here for a long time yet. So will we.
Posted by: MikeA | November 12, 2008 9:56 PM
What a joke.
Just another shock jock, not a surprise.
You hate republicans and Christians... got it!
I like this... you quote Palin...
""Putting my life in my creator's hands -- this is what I always do," Palin said. "I'm like, OK, God, if there is an open door for me somewhere, this is what I always pray. I'm like, don't let me miss the open door ... And if there is an open door in '12 or four years later, and if it is something that is going to be good for my family, for my state, for my nation, an opportunity for me, then I'll plow through that door.""
and then slam her.
Strangely, I must be like Jim and Tammy Faye too then. While I am not running for the presidency, I do live my life by this principle.
For you to attack that it reprehensible.
I find it strange you try to discredit Matt Lauer as journalist, while making fun of Palin's religious views in the same column.
Thanks for the hate.

Palin should really reconsider her goals. After watching the interview with Matt Lauer (which I agree was extremely disappointing), I couldn't help but notice how 7-year-old Piper was walking around the kitchen in 3 in heels. No one can tell me that's normal for a kid, anywhere in the world! Mrs. Palin were are your duties as a parent? And you want peoople to believe you can lead a country, you can't even lead your daughters. Go home and spend some time with your children - and as for your party, they don't seem to have much faith in you either. I'm so proud I'm a democrat and trust me my 7 year old daughter won't be wearing 3 inch heels anytime soon.

What else do you hate in life. Are you one of those punks that just can't let go of the fact that you were picked on in grade school ... or are you a short man under 5'9? Kudos, David Zurawik, for nailing these reporters for their softball interviews of Palin. Greta Van Susteren, in particular, came off as a Palin family friend. Not a high point in broadcast journalism. Maybe Blitzer and Larry King will be tougher on Palin, the single most unqualified person ever to appear on a national ticket.

"You don't says, "All the same ones everybody else reads." Who says that except somebody who is lying? Z "
'You don't says'??[sic]
David, you obviously don't even proofread your own work, as shown above. If Sarah Palin had written "says" in response to a question (or said "57 states" like Obama did), I'm sure you'd attack her intelligence, but for you it's just a typo and for Obama, it was just a slip of the tongue after a long day. The double standard by hypocrites like yourself is deafening.
But beyond that, what pathetic, mindless bigotry to say that Palin was "lying" because she didn't answer the Couric newspaper question the way you think she should have. It shows how small you are as a journalist. So now, YOU get to decide what is a proper answer and what is "lying" because she didn't answer the way you would?! Give me a break!
It is also quite a stretch to refer to Gibson and Couric as "real journalists." That's a laugh and a half. They have zero credibility as journalists. But as Obama propagandists and elite media snobs, they did a great job.

So many people just don't get it. It's NOT NOT NOT that Palin doesn't read newspapers or whatever. The "facts" and/or opinions she (or any) LEADER presents can always be debated.
It's HOW they are presented, in what context, with what clarity, with what insight, etc., etc. that is important! Do ANY of you oh-so-shallow Palin supporteres have ANY CLUE HOW SHE THINKS???? Do you not care how a leader THINKS? She is not only inarticulate, she has shown no signs of deep thought whatsoever. Please, someone, quote me anything that woman has ever said at any time that illustrated anything laudable about her cognitive abilities. PLEASE!

I am an independent who has voted for both Republicans and Democrats in the past. I was raised in an evangelical Christian, conservative Republican family. Sarah Palin is very popular with many evangelicals because she speaks their language - for example, in her speech at the convention, she referred to her "servant's heart," and in interviews since the election has referred to "God's will." Unfortunately, many evangelicals do not look past the rhetoric and in fact are unable/unwilling to consider "the big picture" -- i.e., obvious inadequacies (minor or major) will usually be overlooked merely because an individual is a "Bible-believing Christian." Hence, they are comfortable supporting a candidate who is generally considered to be an unprepared for public office simply because that individual shares their faith.
David, I saw your recent appearance on "Reliable Sources" re Palin and was in complete agreement with the panelists. I hope that the discussion continues, because it is too important to be ignored or forgotten.
