Olbermann rewarded with new contract at MSNBC
Just as Sean Hannity was rewarded for his ideologically driven nightly program at Fox last month, so has MSNBC today announced a new four-year contract for Keith Olbermann.
The deal guarantees four more years of partisan warfare between Fox and MSNBC. Make of that what you will for the future of cable news -- and the republic.
I think the rise of the likes of Hannity, Olbermann and O'Reilly is one of the most troubling trends in TV news -- a hard turn toward propaganda and demogoguery
The new agreement calls for Olbermann to continue as host of his weeknight show, Countdown with Keith Olbermann, according to a statement released by the cable channel.
Olbermann also "will play a prominent role in MSNBC's coverage of all major news events," the cable channel's statement said. He will continue to co-host NBC's Football Night in America studio show.
"Keith Olbermann is at the core of MSNBC's current success," said Phil Griffin, president of MSNBC. "Countdown is our signature program and I'm thrilled that we're going to be able to bring it to Keith's loyal viewers for another four year term."

... but who's he going to use as fodder for the next four years, with Dems in power across the federal gov't?

GREAT, thanks Keith for making my day with good and FAIR reporting.....keep up the great work!!!!

utterly amazing that MSNBC chooses to let this maniac continue to have a show on the network. MSNBC obviously has no desire to climb out of the cellar in the battle of the cable news networks.

You have got to be kidding me. Now keith;s only job is to make Obama look good and I am sure Keith and chris Matthews will do a good job with that. It will only give fodder for Fox news when (they, at MSNBC) gets on their mission of doinmg editorial comments instead of the news. I was hoping they would go away. I guess MSNBC doesnt care about their rating. I switched, and glad I did. The commentary was too over reaching to be called news.

unfortunate what "news" has come to. whatever happened to journalism?
Posted by: Rick | November 10, 2008 2:48 PM
I see the Fox staffers have been leaving their comments. I love Keith Olbermann. It's comforting to know there is a place to go to hear intelligent reporting. And good for Rachel Maddow, too. I think MSNBC is solely responsible for good reporting on the presidential campaign. Mr. Obama should invite them to dinner.
Posted by: Judy Baxter | November 10, 2008 2:54 PM
Keith is the best there is. He uses facts and figures to form opinions and not innuendo. While the right might not like him it is not bcause of his "bias" but that they do not like him holding Dubya to account for his not so transparent administration and the many scandals around it.
America needs more like Keith. You go Mr Olbermann. You are the man!
Posted by: Allen B | November 10, 2008 2:55 PM
Hannity has liberals on his show and has a liberal co-host.
Oberman is not only biased he is unintelligent. The man does not have ability to understand basic economic theory. It appears that this is why he rants and raves. He understand his limitations and attempt to cover them up with silly antics.

Great news. Gives balance against the SCREAMERS on FOX.

i would like to think this is unbelievable but it is the state of affairs at msnbc. this guy is a joke of a "journalist". how anyone takes him seriously is beyond me. unless of course you are partisan as it comes.
Hi Brandon, Thanks. I am on deadline and will write more later here. I think you are on target: He is a joke, a bombastic, puffed-up clown. But the fact that so many people turn to him for their nightly fix scares the heck out of me. Z
Posted by: brandon | November 10, 2008 3:16 PM
Wonderful.......I love Keith, Chris and Rachel. To be fair, I have watched Hannity but he is so far right he has fallen off the cliff.
Posted by: Sylvia | November 10, 2008 3:53 PM
Why did he get resigned? He has horrible ratings and is a complete liberal hack. At least Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert make their lack of journalistic integrity a part of their show. They are funny, Olbermann is just mad. Must suck to be rich, I guess.
Posted by: TAJ | November 10, 2008 3:54 PM
Get off the air ya jerk!
Posted by: msnbc | November 10, 2008 4:15 PM
Well, the Pope is still Catholic, The sun still rises in the east, and Keith Olbermann has 4 MORE YEARS!!! That was a no-brainer. I couldn't fathom an alternative choice, could you? He and Rachel Maddow are the reasons I switched to MSNBC. Oh sure, Colbert is funny, but only because then I know I will laugh at what Keith will do to him next. Let your stars shine.

good job keith, see what being a sports caster can get you,and what it almost got palin
There is a lot of the hot dog and demogogue in both Palin and Olbermann. They are more alike in their empty-headed bluster than one might think. Thanks. Z

KUDOS TO KEITH!!! I love the MSNBC Team in the evening. They tell it like it is. Finally, we have a network we can rely on. I tell all family and friends to watch: Keith, Chris & Rachel. I love you guys!!!

Keith is a joke, I used to admire him on ESPN, now I can't stand to listen to him. p.s. I am a registered Dem.

Fox news can thank themselves for creating the need and appetite for Keith Olbermann. He has found success in pushing back (finally) against Hannity and O'Riley for a reason. If we are going to have these types of political opinion shows - and there is no sign that they are going away anytime soon, then I'm so pleased to have someone as articulate, smart, rigorous - and yes, passionate, as Keith Olbermann representing on my side.
Give 'em hell Keith!

Keith,
Congradulations on your new contract. I love your hard hitting journalism. I am a loyal countdown viewer and now I can look forward to many more.
Hi Darin: How would you define "journalism" so that it has antyhing in common with what Olbermann does? I am serious. Please tell me. Let alone "hard hitting jouralism"? Thanks. If what he does is journalism, we are doomed as democracy. I am serious about this, too, Z

After 20+ years of conservative gasbags on radio and tv, it's a pleasure to have intelligent people to listen to. Glad to hear that Keith's been renewed. Love Rachel, Keith and Chris.
Posted by: Jackie | November 10, 2008 4:59 PM
I think its great! After all that fox crap, Keith was a breath of fresh air. For awhile there, untill he showed up, it seemed the only news you heard was right wing junk, which you knew wasn't true, but there wasn't any alternative to listening to it. Now there is. So good for him.

No one watches the MSNBC lineup anyway.(BTW, don't watch FOX either.) Wish Microsoft could pull its sponsorship. Maybe a boycott?

why in the world would the media broadcast the secret service code names of the first family to be, when the media never did this before?
Posted by: kenneth cole | November 10, 2008 5:44 PM
I have not looked at TV in twenty years.
I stumbled across Olbermann on my laptop one day and it remains the only device or addiction I have.
Besides the 'theater and drama' and the smashing mirrors and Exorcist chair- spinning, at the end of the day, you get the raw news no one else will tell you.
Righteousness without the attendant indignation. How utterly refreshing.
Keith the the honest 'news god'.
Bill-O the Clown, Ringling Brothers is Hiring !!
What can I say about the "Exorcist chair spinning" line? It's great -- even though it worries me that people know he's a medicine show, con-man act, and they still love him. I guess we love our con men in America. Z
Posted by: christian ryder | November 10, 2008 5:54 PM
Wonderful....Keith O and the other members of MSNBC are the ones
that keep the balance between
FOX and other CONSERVATIVE
Stations...so hey, don't worry
about a trend in TV or cable
otherwise: A counter-balance
is always necessary to keep
the Balance...
All is Fair in Love and War...
Congrats to Keith
We in the NorthWest love him!
love it!
GO KEITH, CHRIS, RACHEL
and CHRIS TODD...yea team!
Hi, thanks. But do you think it is a good thing to employ the same tactics that the Hannitys and O'Reillys do? Two wrongs trying to make a right and all that? Z
Posted by: Arlene Tognetti | November 10, 2008 5:59 PM
During the presidential election coverage, I switched to MSNBC. I will never go back to Greta and Sean.
Keith, Chris, and Rachel, YOU ARE THE BEST!
Posted by: Sunny4 | November 10, 2008 6:04 PM
Keith Olbermann is no way like the mindless Hannity and brain dead O'Reilly. Keith presents the facts not fiction and he is fair and balanced...
CONGRATS KEITH!!!
Hi, thanks for the comment. But "facts"? Is Rupert Murdoch really the worst person in the world? Okay, he's not the best. But the worst? But, seriously, that is exactly my concern thata people think the highly partisan slant that Olbermann brings to his highly selective lineup of items has anything to do with fact-based journalism, which is absolutely essential to an informed public. Thanks. Z

Hey there, you right-wing conspiracy theorists! Don't worry! Relax! Olbermann being such a bombastic puffed-up clown maniac left-wing liberal redistributionist terrorist socialist whateverist – this means he's NOT a member of the evil Mainstream Media about which Sarah Palin so vehemently warned us!!!
Besides, he's much cuter than ol' puffy faced Sean Hannity or his cadaverous-looking sidekick. Less paranoid than Bill O'Reilly and... well... cuter than Bill, too. Most importantly, Olbermann is much prettier than sourpuss Greta Van Susteren with her botched plastic surgery (honestly, I thought the poor woman had had a stroke – that weird upper lip, y’know – until I started thinking about what she USED to look like, GOOGLED her and... well, check it out for yourself http://www.strangepolitics.com/content/item/3859.html).

I've been looking/listening at/to Keith for a long time; three things I'm sure of: 1. he helped to elect Presidential candidate Barack Obama and announced his win over Hillary Clinton and announced Baracks' selection Tues. the 4th 2.No one has disputed his diatribes of the Republicans 3. whatever is wrong with him, the same is wrong with Rush, they both have freedom of speech- Keith is likend to Shakespear, Rush to Ann Coulter
Posted by: Barbara | November 10, 2008 6:35 PM
Just in case anyone missed the fact, neither Olbermann, Hannity or O'Reilly are journalist. They are commentators. They are biased and appealing to their markets. Anyone who thinks that Olbermann and Hannity are nothing more than political hacks needs to get some fresh air. O'Reilly, for all his faults runs closest to the center of the three on the right as Rachel runs to the left of center.
Posted by: vindex | November 10, 2008 7:04 PM
Z-,
Do you really take the "Worst Person in The World" segment seriously? I can tell KO doesn't most of the time.
I personally watch "Countdown" for the entertainment value and because I get a left wing take on the events of the day. I freely admit that. But I do wish he would have more right-leaning commentators on his show. I don't use him as my sole news source. When I compare him to Mr. "No-Spin Zone", well there's no comparison. Both are bombastic but O'Reilly takes himself much more seriously than Olbermann does (which is saying something considering the size of KO's ego). I get a headache when I watch O'Reilly and Hannity bully and shout down their guests. You don't get that on "Countdown". But in the end, it's just TV.

Keith , what would we do without you and Rachel? I am a fan and watch you and now Rachel every night. Keep up the good news. There is nothing better than a SMART individual. Maybe you can educated Morning Joe when his show comes on I turn to CNN.
Posted by: Beverly Richardson | November 10, 2008 8:30 PM
Keith,
I absolutely LOVE your show. I watch every episode and am never disappointed. You tell it like it is, and uncover the truth about everything. This is true professional journalism.
I hate watching Hannity, Greta, and the other right-wing nuts. Greta is actually totally infactuated with Sarah Palin, so much, in fact, that she is in Alaska at this time. She's been in Palin's crack 98% of the time during the election. Greta's blog is so profoundly racist and she promotes and encourages hatered for our President Elect. If you get a chance, check her out at gretawire.com. Some of her faithful fans type out detailed plans for "taking the country over with guns and ammunition." She promotes and condones violence and I think FOXNEWS needs to be shut down.
Anyway, congratulations KEITH!! I am so glad to know that I get to watch you for at least another 4 years. Keep bringing the real news to us.

Good to see one of the good guys gt rewarded. Those who are posting negative comments about Keith are just used to the right-wing propaganda-machines having free reign over the airwaves. What a rerfreshing change. Kudo's MSNBC!
Posted by: Tony | November 10, 2008 10:36 PM
Who advertises on MSNBC?
Since I do not watch this mentally ill moron I do not know which advertisers to byocott. Is Keith still wearing a leather jacket like the sicko he is?
Posted by: MD4Palin | November 10, 2008 10:37 PM
A problem/weakness of the mainstream media is the idea of equivalency. There are not always 2 equal positions, left and right.
It is clear the right makes many false statements. Olbermann may reach at times, but all a free thinker has to do is look at Fact Check . org. Case closed!

did anyone see ben affleck's parody of keith on snl last week? it was perfect! it is on their website.
keith is a goof ball, but when bush policies got under my skin, watching keith go off on him did make me laugh. kinda like bill maher does.
Hi Julia, Yes, I saw the parody and thought it was brilliant. And I think you abolutely nailed a key part of Olbermann's appeal with "when the Bush poilicies...." Thanks. Z
Posted by: julia | November 11, 2008 10:32 AM
Z, I actually started to watch KO because of your appearance on Dan Rodricks' show which by and large is really great then your commentarie intreagued me. We have started watching Olbermann either live or when I/we wake up at 4 a.m.. I understand where you are coming from with concerns abour propaganda, but so far he's seemed to be right on the money. I've never disagreed with you but I think Olbermann needs a little space to see what he'll do. I really think he'll out this administration as much as Comedy Central will do unlike Hannity, and O'Reilly who don't seem to have any facts except those who have prevaricated them before the telecast.
JB
JB, I fear I lost you to Olbermann. But that's OK. I understand the appeal especially with the dark forces of the right still roaming the airwaves and halls of power. But after Jan. 20, you have to give Olbermann up (kidding). Z

What a joke. This guy is no more a reporter than you or I.He's just a guy with a big mouth and connections. He doesn't report news ,he just rants and raves. This guy is so bias it isn't funny.Of course that is why he is at msnbc.Oh yea, he's not funny either. He's the epitimy of almost all of the media these days, bias and unfair. As reporters these people need to report things objectivley , which they don't.They all just infuse their own opinions and ideas;hatred and gloom. They should all be happy now that their guy Obama is in but they can't until they pull their heads out of Obama
Posted by: mark | November 12, 2008 10:16 AM
as a person that can not stand Mr. Olbermann, I let him go. But what i cannot let go is people that state that Fox News reporters are hacks, and that KO actually reports relevant "news."
Ok so a quick comparison between Fox and CNN compared to MSNBC.
Fox and CNN, REQUIRE both sides of the story. Not only will you hear the Dems side, you will hear the Republicans side.
MSNBC, you will NOT hear both sides of the story. Mr. Olbermann NEVER if EVER lets a conservative on his show to demonstrate points.
This is the obvious disgrace of "journalism" that KO represents.
You can not argue that Oreilly and Hannity yell with their guests, because its true, but atleas their guests are their to present their views and let the viewers atleast understand what they are representing. KO neither lets GOP or conservatives on his show, all he does is slander and libel them on a constant basis.
If KO said half of the things he states about Mr. Bush or any conservative to an average american he would be in jail for criminal slander and libel. So just because they are public officials he gets a free pass from everyone???
Just face it America, KO is bias as can be (and Ms. Maddow atleast talks it up with Mr. Buchanon).
Thanks Z, tell it like it is.

In the ongoing MSNBC contretemps you and I have going, I wanted to ask if you saw Olbermann's response to California
Prop 8. I thought it thoughtful and emotionally engaging and intellectual enough to give honest pause to the fairest-minded Pop 8 supporters in their assumptions and political opposition to gay marriage.
If you can see that and acknowledge Keith's good deed here, try to see Olbermann as a commentator and acknowledge that none of the Fox "commentators" has gotten so intellectual and emotionally engaging on such a sensitive issue.
I strongly feel you have established a false equivilency with Olbermann and Maddow with pompous windbags with no respect for other opinions (Hannity, OReilly)

Z:
just to add to my previous post I see that Dennis Miller and Bill-O did a segment last nite that ended w Miller doing a homphobic ad lib regarding Barney Frank, which did at least regester on Bill's face as possibly inappropriate, but of course, no apologies for the Lee Atwater-like innuendos. Just slime and move on.
Keith O is much better than that, and you should see the differance.
i used to like Miller even though i knew we did not agree politically, but the man has really lost any comedic touch as he has drifted farther and farther right and more and more "us vs. them" in his outlook. Not a pretty sight
Posted by: Tony Joe from Baltimore | November 13, 2008 1:30 PM
As a straight, long time married Californian, I watched and listened to Keith O's commentary about proposition 8 with rapt attention and at the end had pounding heart and tears in my eyes. Bravo, Keith!

Good news. Keith is intelligent and compassionate, and has been a good voice for those of us who are as outraged by the injustice and insanity of the Bush years as he has been. It remains unfortunate that so many are taken in by the irrational rantings of the likes of Hannity and O'Reilly. It's good to see that recently, though, more seem to be tuning in to Keith and Rachel Maddow, as their ratings have been higher.
Posted by: Chris Snyder | November 17, 2008 11:24 AM
Olberman and ... Maddow, are disgraces to journalism. They represent the problems with our country...angry, liberal, out of touch. They cant STAND main stream America. They think, because they are on TV, they're opinions matter. They don't. Prop 8..thats what AMERICA wanted. ..... America ... needs a cure for these two liberal puke talking heads. Mainstream America hates these talking heads. And save me the Dupont Circle rants...liberals ... are irrelevant...W hen the ... come to bomb youre house and kill your family..don't worry..all of us Repubs will protect you.

olberman and Maddow are hateful people. It,s ok to have an opinion, but to find nothing good in any republican is ridiculous. What if Obama was a more center of the road liberal, which he is slowly becoming? Don't they know facts?I wish Olberman would get rid of the Sarah Palin glasses and Maddow could try to look as good as the women on Fox News.
