Obama and 60 Minutes make for record ratings

krThe overnight ratings for Steve Kroft's interview with President-elect Barack Obama and future First Lady Michelle Obama were the highest in almost a decade for the top-rated CBS newsmagazine 60 Minutes.

With a 17.4 rating and 26 share, Sunday's edition of 60 Minutes was watched in one out of every four American homes with a TV use. It was the largest overnight audience for 60 Minutes since January, 1999.

The national Nielsen ratings won't be out until Tuesday, but the overnights based on 56 metered markets indicate that 60 Minutes could again be the highest-rated show on TV for the second straight week.

If the overnight ratings hold up, the national audience would come in at  24.49 million viewers. (Because the CBS football game, which preceded 60 Minutes, ran over by some 30 minutes, the final audience measurement could be affected.)

Last week's broadcast, which included an interview by Kroft with four key Obama advisers on the night of his election, was seen by 18.47 million viewers to top all shows.

I wonder if 60 minutes will ever air a false report about Obama like Dan Rather did for Bush when they did that famous President Bush during his Vietnam-era service in the Texas Air National Guard story that was debunked by blogs. And yet somehow Rather and 60 minutes is still thought of a some sort of high journalistic standard.

Hi Brandon, You are dead wrong about Dan Rather. I and others have written many pieces, and I have appeared on national TV, saying that Rarther committed a cardinal sin of journalism in going with documents that he had not verified, and that he deserved to be forced out at CBS News. If you want, I will provide a link. Just comment back. Senior producers were also fired at 60 Minutes II, which no longer exists. That is where the piece ran. But rather paid with his job and reputation -- paid dearly. Z

that's ok, i believe you. but i don't know how dearly he paid. he still works in journalism and i've seen him on msnbc as a guest on the morning joe show.

Hi Brandon, You are right about Rather still being taken seriously in some quarters. But Morning Joe and the HDNet are a long, long way down from the rung on which he used to sit in the world of journalism. Serious journalists understand how wrong it was for him to go with those unconfirmed documents on the eve of an election. It was one of the worst journalistic sins you can commit -- even if someday they are poroven to be authentic. You do not go on the air and make the kind of charges he did without verification. His actions undermine the credibility of all journalists. CBS New sis still working to regain what he so recklessly damaged. Thanks. Z

Are you kidding me? Dan Rather was a professional whith decacdes in the business, and had to come up the ranks the "old way" not like katie couric or Bill Oreily. This guy was a TRUE Journalist. And Yes that was a huge mistake to make by a veteran of the media, but after decades he should be given a break, I mean Fox News ran 2 False stories on Obama (Michelle fictional whitey tape, and the whole Madrassa school incident) No one lost their job and that was 2 false stories in 1 election cycle.

I cannot vouch for Fox News and what it does. I know that by reputable mainstream standards of journalism, what Dan Rarther did is inexcusable. And I think you will find that is the consensus in the business today. If you want, I will try and find a link to a discussion in which I was involved on the topic on CNN's Reliable Sources, the media review show hosted by Howard Kurtz, of the Washington Post. Thanks. Z

I never thought I would see journalist and the overall media so bias. The usual investigative reporting we have grown used to was subverted. I guess it will always be true. Believe nothing that you hear and only half of what you read. Shame on the press and news media.

I think we best be getting on with the promise of making America energy independent.Iran just asked OPEC to reduce production by yet another 1.5 million barrels per day. This past year and the record gas prices played a huge part in our economic meltdown and seriously damaged our society. We keep planning to spend BILLIONS on bailouts and stimulus plans.Bail us out of our dependence on foreign oil. Make electric plug in car technology more affordable. It cost the equivalent of 60 cents a gallon to drive an electric plug in car. The electric could be generated from wind or solar. Get with it! Utilize free sources such as wind and solar. Stop throwing away money on things that don't work. Invest in America and it's energy independence. Create cheap clean energy, create millions of badly needed green collar jobs. Put America back to work. It is a win-win situation. We have to become more poractive citizens, educate ourselves and demand our elected officials move this country forward into the era of energy independence. Jeff Wilson's new book The Manhattan Project of 2009 Energy Independence NOW outlines a plan for America to wean itself off oil. We need a plan and we need it now! www.themanhattanprojectof2009.com

Don't strut your stuff too much CBS.
I'm sure alot of viewers have the same phylosophy as my wife and I have. Keep your enemies close .
The only reason we watched this totally lame interview was to see if 60 minutes had the guts to ask the hard questions and CBS failed again.
When all of the Obama youth get frustrated after 6 months time, we'll see the true Obama come to light.

Hi Roy, The interview was definitely friendly at the end, but I thought Kroft asked all the questions that needed to be asked -- I definitely do. As to the "true" Obama, I have no idea what you mean by that. Can you clarify? Thanks. Z

There is always a honeymoon period before the tough questions start coming. He isn't President yet, so there's nothing to talk about except hopes and expectations.

Probably few people remember how they fawned over Reagan long after he proved himself dishonest, ruthless, and without compassion.

This response is for Z ( whatever that is )
Based on all of the secrets kept during Obama's campaign, one has to wonder what it is he has to hide.
We found out more about Joe the Plumber then we did about Barrack and his wife.
Many of my friends and many people I've talked with all have the same belief that what we are witnessing right now is a wolf in sheeps clothing. It is apparent to us (who have half a working brain) what is on Barrack's agenda. It is also apparent to us what is on his Wife's agenda as well. ( now that she's finally proud to be an American )
All I have to say is this : The Obama youth are very impatient people. He has made many promises to them that we all know he can't keep.
I can't wait for these youth to come home crying to their parents because they were mislead by this fake. If these parents are like I am they would tell these inexperienced youngsters to live with their mistakes and don't come home crying to us.
Obama will shed the sheepskin eventually. The only question is when.

Z,

I forgot to mention the most important part of the "true" Obama on my last response.
The true Obama actually has all of the traits of a habitual liar. Even during the 60 minutes broadcast his wife had to correct him on quite a few issues. Hopefully she won't correct him in the future in front of foreign leaders like she did on 60 minutes last night.
I found the two of them to actaully be quite distant with each other. Just another charade I guess.

Hi Roy, Thank you for clarifying. I guess if you believe so firmly taht he is a liar, there is nothing I can say. We will just have to see if he delivers or not. Thanks. PS The Z is just me, Zurawik. I wanted to call the blog Zurawik on TV. But the people for whom I work thought otherwise. Sorry if you were confused. Z

Obama thinks the job is easy. He will not be smiling very long. Further, the bias media got Obama elected. I hope everyone that voted for Obama gets their taxed raised. They deserve it!

I am quite sure people will attempt to put Obama through the wringer. LIES drip with envy and jealousy. Obama will come out unruffled and dry behind the ears. The pathos of the Lim Bahhhs is to always be ignored.

Totally frustrated here. I wanted to watch this interview and our local networks opted to show the Redskins football game. Will it be aired again?

I doubt if they will replay. Can you go online? you can see it at cbs.com....You can see all of it at this site. Just return and click on the video player in the previous post. Also, there is more in the right hand side of the blog -- another video player with the full interview. Let me know if that doesn't work. Thanks. Z

In his 60 minute interview, Steve Kroft asked Obama only one question of any substance and then let him slide without answering at all. " Where will the money come from for all the programs that he proposes" Obama went off on a dozen different tangents, while Steve just sat there and smiled.
Where's Mike Wallace when we need him?

Personally, I thought there was a lot of theater and hot dog with Wallace. There is none of that with Kroft. I thought he did a solid professional job. Z

I guess in what passes for professional journalism today, your probably right. However I can remember many times when Wallace held their feet to the fire and got an answer. Perhaps I just don't understand how these things work today.

No, you are right to some extent. But with 60 Minutes, so much of the work was done by the producers before Walalce ever sat down for the interview. Wallace's background was not journalism, it was talk show. Thanks. Z

People don't ask where the war and invasion money is coming from.... They don't question that at all... Another thing, if you're worrying about taxes being raised apparently you're in the 250K bracket.

After reading Roy's several posts, I most agreed with his statement that he and his friends "have half a working brain."

Roy
You're a bit disheveled at the prospect of living under the new administration. You rant about a "hidden agenda" but he has yet to offer anything but an alternate way to get us out the mess of the Bush travesty. What further "hard" questions does he need to answer that weren't already asked in the campaign? He hasn't even been sworn in yet you speak of an"nherent evil" that only folks like you can see. What makes you such an expert on personality and a "true nature of a person. Where did you get your phylisophical degree? You still don't clarify what the traits of a "habitual liar" are, nor what his "true agenda" is. Guess you rest nostalgic for the total fiasco that was the past 8 years. And just who are the "Obama youth"? You dismiss and disrespect the integrity of men, women, old, young, various nationalities, political persuasions, etc. who voted their conscience and not "party-only politics" and character assassination that is the ineffectual legacy of the GOP. You learned nothing in the interview because you DIDN'T WANT to learn anything that doesn't support your own closed-minded bias and hateful stances. Hope you learn to let go of the "them vs. "us", the "left-wing vs. the right -wing"mentality that got America in the state we're in and for which, with all common sense, integrity and vision, President Obama and his cabinet will be able to overcome and bring the country to wisdom, unity and progress.

Bugbuster and Roy, I am having trouble understanding this talk about hidden agendas and habitual lying. First off, the man hasn't stepped foot in office yet and you condemn him as a liar and a hypocrite. Secondly, you speak of agendas and don't actually say what these "hidden agendas" are. What a lot of this really sounds like is childish disappointment that you did not get what you wanted. I will be the first one to admit I was wrong about the man if he gets into office and doesn't follow through on some of his major issues, but condemn a man before he pulls the trigger, that isn't right or mature.
