Saturday Night Live: Will Palin appear? I'll be here
Just as I did after the season premiere of Saturday Night Live with the specatcular debut of Tina Fey as Sarah Palin, I'll be reviewing the show tonight at Z on TV.
A couple of thoughts going in, and I admit the first is probably only me being a little over the top as a journalist trained in and committed to a belief that our first job is to confirm information before we present it as true to the public.
I know everyone including the Sun is saying Sarah Palin will be on SNL tonight. Her appearance is a big deal with so much of the most important "news" of this landmark election happening on TV shows -- and often comedy shows rather than newscasts or news interviews.
But please notice that we only have John McCain and a McCain spokeswoman saying that Palin will be on SNL -- not NBC. And McCain has been a little -- what should we say? -- erratic about showing up for TV appearances?
After decades of reporting on the TV industry, the fact that I have yet to receive confirmation from NBC makes me a little concerned -- especially given the fact that the network has been great in getting transcripts, updates and confirmations on SNL out to reporters and critics this year.
My other thought -- if she appears -- involves the live audience. I wonder how it will respond to Palin.
Outside of her one debate and two disastrous interviews with ABC's Charles Gibson and CBS anchorwoman Katie Couric, GOP handlers have practically kept her in a bubble away from anyone but supporters at rallies.
The live SNL audience will be another player to watch tonight.
And then, stop back here for after-show analysis on Z on TV.
(PS: If NBC comes through with confirmation today, I'll post it here. So check back if you are as cautious about having your information confirmed as I am.)

If she can read the dummy cue cards she should be ok; the writers aren't going to make her look like a fool--she has already done that.

That's interesting. Have you been actively seeking confirmation from NBC?
Absolutely no confirmation yet from NBC. That doesn't mean it isn't happening. But it is curious -- very curious. Z

I think Sarah Palin should go on SNL and imitate Tina Fey, or do a twin think like Parent Trap

I wonder what to expect from the cast members. Thursday's weekend update had a scathing portrayal of McCain as delusional. Will the Palin front be torn apart on live tv in front of an audience of millions?
I think that if she does appear, they will mainly play nice and not rip into her for the ugly and reckless innuendo and slander she has delivered on the campaign trail. I think there might even be some ground rules in place as to what is allowed. Z

Sarah will be there and she will shine. How cruel the media has been, she is bright, elequent and articulate....probably too good to be on that show.

You have made me and my small town NC plumbing kin mad!
OK, Gov, you have really overstepped the line. I come from a small NC town in the Piedmont section, lived in the hollars in the mountains, went to school at UNC-CH, have many relatives there still--all over the state. And YES, lots of them are plumbers with full accreditation! At least four cousins and an uncle. None of them is Joe sixpack-- they wouldn't think of drinking. And BTW lots are named Joe!! And because NC was historically a very democratic populist state--we are all democrat and have been so for about 150 years.
SO watch your step when you indicate that only "pockets" of small town American are patriotic and you know who they are! I am a pro-peace and pro-Americans' patriot, who like my plumbing relatives think being democratic and patriotic is using your brain to critique and your mouth to express your opinion rather than pour beer down it. I learned from my kin well and tell it like I see it on my blog www.vaboomer.com
I think you would benefit from the tart funny comment of my Aunt Nelle, who was blind and a caseworker for the blind in NC for 40 years. When speaking of those with rigid closed minds she said, " Her mind is so narrow her ears rub together."
My NC small town plumbing store keeping farming family, helped bring peaceful integration to Mecklenburg Charlotte school district, taught in segregated schools fighting the segregation, fought for the rights of the disabled, my grandmother fought for the right to vote, and they opposed a Scopes Monkey Trial law in NC, among other public democratic actions. So when you think you know who lives in a small NC town and who is patriotic and who is not...watch out. Are your ears rubbing together?

I'm sure Sarah Palin can read the "dummy cards" as well as Barack Obama can read a telepromter.

I notice no commemts posted since your discription of palin's campaign as "ugly and reckless innuendo and slander" Those are really big words. Have you received any posts from people that dissagree with you?

And we should just let the Disinformation keep on rolling out.. All of the networks CNN HNN NBC (and its subdivisons CNBC PMSNBC) CBS ABC and FOX are all spin machines, all equally EViL, spewing forth their propagandized sound bytes to control your mind. Mass hypnosis at it's finest. Thats why its called television programming!!!! THINK FOR YOURSELF!!!!! QUESTION AUTHORITY!!!!!!!!!!!! DON'T BELIEVE EVERYTHING YOU READ!!! Quoted Text:"I think that if she does appear, they will mainly play nice and not rip into her for the ugly and reckless innuendo and slander she has delivered on the campaign trail. I think there might even be some ground rules in place as to what is allowed. Z" Oh great way to make an objective and bias free comment!!!
Let me put it like this: To hell with John McCain and F#@K Obamma too!!!!

She does NOT need dummy cards and has NOT been a fool. Why do some people dislike her so much? Is it because she touches their lack of conscience? She is AWESOME! and SMART! Go McCain/Palin !!!!

You are a "little concerned"??? I am 'chomping at the bit' here...

Palin going to SNL is like chum into a shark tank... why would anyone go to the home of people that don't like you? I suspect she is going there to "face them down" and let them know she can take their crap. Kick Butt Sarah Palin!

Well, it could also be a real disaster for her. My guess is the audience is not going to be a bunch of Palin supporters. Putting her into this sort of live and somewhat hostile environment with film rolling, could surely backfire. While much of the country doesn't watch SNL any longer, the next day's takes may say it all.
Great having you blogging her Dave.

Hi Z. I just discovered your site; nice work! I, too, have my doubts about Palin actually appearing on SNL - at least, not without some SUPER strict "preconditions!" It irritates me that she'd be on at all - if she wants media attention, she should get her ass on Good Morning America or Meet the Press and then earn the right to be on a nighttime comedy show. But I'll be keeping tabs on your site to see what emerges tonight!

I had not watched SNL in awhile, and tuned in tonight because of Palin's appearance. Now that I watched a little, I am wondering why Sarah would have bothered. It's a long way from funny, and not at all the show that launched so many famous careers. Instead, the skits are incredibly humorless and tasteless. It hangs on... why??

Okay, I have to respond to nachomama . . . he probably has had very few people disagreeing with him about Palin's campaign being an unchanging stream of "ugly and reckless innuendo and slander." Yes, those are really big words. And really true words. Sarah Palin has done to herself what the "media elite" could never have dreamed of doing: She permitted the country to see her as she is, which is vapid, ignorant, bigoted and proudly uninformed. And what's worse, her delusion is so vast that she can't understand what we see! Anyone who claims she's smart . . . yikes! This site is awesome!

I don't know why Palin would want to go on the show and boost NBC ratings for SNL so much. Heck, I haven't watched that show for years and just tuned in to see her in a silly little skit. The rest of the show actually reminds me how downhill SNL has gone. Nothing to do with politics... just not very funny.

Sarah Palin’s appearance on SNL was a bust--no pun intended. She was dull and so was the show. Her presence ruined it. She is such an unpleasant person--so full of lies and vitriol and nonsense—it’s hard to forget that nastiness and grand incompetence whenever you see her. Heaven help us if that woman is elected—what a disaster. Fox News will no doubt declare her tv appearance a triumph and start predicting a McCain win again, right after they post a few more reports about ACORN and Obama’s ties to terrorists. It’s high time for the Republicans to disappear quietly from the scene. They have made enough disasters already--ruined our economy, run up an astronomical national debt, embarrassed us all internationally, lied to us all repeatedly. Please, we need some air we can breathe, not all this old stale smoke. Sarah, please go home.

Just watched the episode. She played it safe and let the cast do all the work. It was funny and worth staying up for.

I can hear Hannity now . . . "Hey, Sarah Palin went on Saturday Night Live, she's not afraid of the media . . . she's even been on MY show, and everybody knows what a hard-hitting journalist I am," right before he tells us all how this brave woman is not afraid to expose Barack's ties to ACORN and Ayres and how he's a socialist and Robinhood in disguise. BTW, I'm from Chicago, and Barack Obama is not a blip on the political corruption radar here. As both a politician and someone who contributes to his community, he rubbed elbows with the likes of Bill Ayres - a college professor and another individual who encourages education in his community - in this tolerant city. The people of Chicago don't run people out on a rail because they don't meet our standards of how people should think - the way they do in, say, Wasila, Alaska.

Sarah is the single savior of America's destiny
Posted by: Beau | October 19, 2008 12:51 AM
Palin was awesome! For once Baldwin gets it right...Palin is way hotter than Tina Fey. Plus she had a powerful confidence and presence that dwarfed the SNL cast. Hope she wins.

I sometimes feel like I'm in the twilight zone when I read "Sarah is the single savior of America's destiny" and "Palin . . . had a powerful confidence and presence . . . ." She was stiff as a board on SNL and couldn't poke fun at herself with a gun to her head. And as far as being the savior of America's destiny . . . sure, if you like banned books, Banned Everything-Sarah-Doesn't-Like, ethics violations and a husband who lurks around in the White House like the First Thug. Do these bloggers see anything beyond the canned lines she repeats over and over like a trained parrot?! Sign me, "Since her approval ratings are so low I'm pretty sure I'm not the one who's delusional . . . ."

Palin was "awesome" and "the single savior of America's destiny"? Number one, Palin didn't do anything but stand there, or sit there, depending on the scene! It was lame, lame, lame! And if she's America's savior, I pity what this country will look like in four years.
Chuck Baldwin for President!
