Obama delivers TV tour de force worthy of JFK
Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama delivered a TV tour de force last night.
I don’t think any presidential candidate has ever had as strong and wide-reaching a run on the medium as Obama did from the dinner hour to the midnight hour. As he shifted programming genres ranging from news to comedy, Obama alt
ered his demeanor and calibrated his performances to the different settings with TV skills not seen since John F. Kennedy.
Obama’s race across the television landscape started with informed and thoughtful responses to some tough questions from anchorman Charles Gibson on ABC World News at 6:30 p.m., and was still going strong as the clock approached midnight with live cable TV coverage of a speech in Florida where Obama was joined onstage by former President Bill Clinton. It was the first time these two men -- two of the most eloquent speakers in American politics -- stood side by side that way.
In between, was the highly publicized, prime-time infomercial that ran on three networks and four cable channels at 8 p.m., an effective and affecting production aimed at helping viewers get to know Obama better – even as it also personalized the nation's current hard times through the stories of four diverse American families.
And at 11 p.m., like a sweet after-dinner desert, came Obama’s interview with comedian Jon Stewart on Comedy Central’s The Daily Show. Obama struck just the right jocular and bemused tone with the acerbic comic – even though he was appearing via satellite, which can often make repartee all but impossible. Obama kept pace with Stewart quip for quip.
After watching every second of it, I stand by my column of yesterday: Obama is the last great TV candidate – the best since John F. Kennedy, better than Ronald Reagan.
Gibson, who was the first to grill and expose the limitations of Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, was giving no free pass to Obama last night. While the conversation was cordial, some pointed questions were asked.
Obama’s best moment was the way he dismissed charges from the McCain campaign labeling him a socialist and Marxist without sounding defensive by saying, "The notion I'm interested on punishing wealth or success is nonsense."
Here is a representative exchange:
GIBSON: And yet in recent months, you have hammered at the wealthy and CEOs and Wall Street and greed. Talked about taxing the wealthy to benefit lower- and middle-income people. Isn't that a kind of classic old-time class warfare?
OBAMA: No. You know, I'm reminded of my friend, Warren Buffett, whose support I'm very glad to have, who says if there's class warfare going on right now, my class is winning. (LAUGHS) Look, what I'm talking about here is going back to the Bush tax rates -- or the tax rates that existed under Bill Clinton back in the 1990s for people making more than $250,000 a year. That's not a punitive rate. We're talking about a marginal rate going from 36 to 39.
GIBSON: So what'd you mean when you told that plumber you wanted to spread the wealth?
OBAMA: Well, if you look at the tape, what I said was exactly what I said right now, which is that if people are doing very well, then there's nothing wrong with us going back to these old tax rates in order to give tax relief to 95 percent of Americans who have been struggling even when the economy was growing. Now, that basic principle is as American as apple pie. You know, the irony of -- the biggest promoter of the early progressive income tax was John McCain's hero, Teddy Roosevelt.
As for the prime-time infomercial, its power came primarily from the wise use of imagery.
From an opening filmed image of an amber field of grain in Kansas, to a live closing shot of a wildly cheering crowd in Florida, Obama’s 30-minute, prime-time campaign infomercial last night was a winner.
It wasn’t that the production broke any new ground in media and politics. The producers essentially worked within the well-worn and time-tested genre of candidate films shown at national conventions. Think: Bill Clinton and The Man From Hope.
But last night’s presentation was skillfully attuned to the candidate’s strengths and perceived weaknesses – and spoke in a voice perfectly pitched to counter what the opposition, Republican presidential and vice presidential candidates John McCain and Sarah Palin, have been saying against Obama on the campaign trail.
His opponents have warned that Obama is an unknown quantity and somehow "different" than what they define as mainstream Americans. But in the film, he spoke movingly about being defined by the "absence" of his father, shaped by the death to cancer of his mother, and the love and hard work of his grandparents. And every scene included an American flag and an abundance of images from our shared national psyche like those fields of grain.
Furthermore, image after image showed Obama in the homes of voters talking to groups of people in close proximity. While diverse, each of the groups included large numbers of older white women and men, exactly the voters whom analysts say Obama needs to reach in battleground states. The intimacy of the home setting, along with the relaxed way in which the citizens and Obama shared that private space told viewers they had nothing to fear about this man.
In the end, though, perhaps nothing was more impressive in the infomercial than the vignettes of four diverse families struggling to make ends meet. Joe the Plumber felt like a phony, trumped-up sitcom character compared to these hard-working Americans whose stories of economic hardship the film deftly chronicled.
And then, came Stewart.
As serious and measured as Obama was in the news setting with Gibson, with Stewart, Obama was all smiles, high energy and witty banter.
When Stewart brought up the charges of socialism leveled by McCain and Palin, Obama replied, "The whole socialism argument doesn’t really hold up. They find proof for it in the fact that in kindergarten I shared some toys with my friend… But I think being on your program is seen as further evidence of that tendency."
By the end of the conversation, the two were flat-out schmoozing, and you could not help but smile at how fast and funny the two minds were working despite the satellite technology between the one in New York and the other in Florida.
And still even as Stewart ended, a click of the remote to the 24/7 cable channels brought up the now oh-so-familiar image of Obama standing live on a stage surrounded by a sea of followers holding white and blue signs cheering and applauding.
He had shifted into another gear yet – a higher one – of elevated tone and soaring rhetoric. And it almost seemed as if the small screen would no longer be able to contain him.

Obama is nowhere near JFK. Obama wants to pay for everything you want, which is just ridiculous and PURE SOCIALISM! Let's not forget JFK's great speech: "Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country."

Well, gee, David. First of all, I take it that you do not consider yourself to be anything close to being an objective journalist.
That said, I have to suppose from your swoonings that all it takes to be a great president of these United States is the ability to be smooth and warm on TV. I mean, anybody who can "flat-out schmooz" has my vote!!!!
SHEESH!! I wonder who you could be voting for????
Stooge.

Wow...
JFK?
Either you dont think much of JFK, or you are a bit too easy to please. An infomercial interupting the world series where you basically promise EVERYONE, EVERYTHING they want is not what i think of when i think "JFK". Unrealistic, shallow, self-serving and crude were the descriptives i came up with. Honestly, I was pretty sure I was going to vote democrat UNTIL i saw that pretentious 30 minute tirade. Now, i am not sure. I may go McCain or abstain now. Im a realist, I can read the "writing on the wall", but its really sad that people are this easily swayed by pretty words. That man should sell cars.

The difference in tone between the McCain and Obama campaigns is striking. Obama outlines specific plans to help hurting people. He gives hope. McCain uses nasty robobcalls (at least in our battleground state) and sends out 95-minute DVDs using people like Corsi to slander his opponent. None of the negative stuff and slanders does anything to help hurting people.

I can't afford cable or anything faster than dial-up (so I don't watch video clips because they're so slow), but I did watch the infomercial. The half-hour passed quickly, and I was disappointed that it ended so soon. First infomercial I've ever been able to watch.
Posted by: Mary | October 30, 2008 7:26 AM
I always believed John McCain was
arrogant and picking a totally inexperienced candidate as VP - (unless you believe that mayor of a town of 9000 is enough experience, her term as governor is not even two years!!), The mixture of arrogance and ignorance could be explosive.
Really, in the early stages I was'nt convinced of Obama...now I believe he could remake America to be that shining beacon
Posted by: John Reidy | October 30, 2008 7:31 AM
Yeah, whatever. The infomercial showed the worst of America. Several idiotic families, the lowest of the low. It was a shameful portrayal of the the class of the stupid.

Pander, pander, pander... No media bias? Zurawik sounds like an infatuated schoolgirl...I'm reminded from his tone of Kouric fawning and batting her eyes at Obama during her interviews with him.
The real issue, I think, is the fact that Mr Change paid for all of this TV advertising with mony he recieved from the same bunch that collapsed the economy, and that he had "pledged" not to take, back during the primaries. Just one of many broken promises that he made early on to garner votes. Change? Looks like more of the same...maybe even worse, to me.

Come on Sun....you gotta be kidding, right? Comparison to JFK stops past the tongue!
Posted by: Simplemind | October 30, 2008 7:59 AM
A tour de force....Barrack is just so dreamy is'nt he? Its awesome that he was able to back out of public financing and have an unfair advantage in marketing budget. Back that up with a press corp (like this Zurawik guy) which is 90% liberal and you have a recipe for a complete whitewash of media domination. Oh Barrack, we just love you so!
Posted by: Taylor | October 30, 2008 8:04 AM
David, why don't you just quit and join the Obama campaign? We've long since given up expecting any objectivity from the Sun, but it's pretty sad when even the TV critic can do nothing but gush like a teenage girl day after day. "... the small screen would no longer be able to contain him."? Oh, please. So, since "TV skills," to use your term, make a good president, we'll assume that you were a big Reagan supporter, right? Right?

Obama is a liar and a two-bit politician. Just like all the rest. So is McCain. The difference is that McCain is less of a threat to my rights as an American, as oulined in the Bill of Rights, Than Obama. McCain gets my vote.

All those flags in every scene and fields of grain surrounding Obama are akin to a prisoner, whose normal wear is sleazy, dressed in a suit by his lawyers at trial to appear like an upstanding citizen. But really listen to what comes out of his mouth, digest that, and make an opinion on what is said and not all the pretty stuff used to take your mind off the words.
Posted by: Cherryle Formby | October 30, 2008 8:16 AM
Obama makes every one of his Republican critics look like insects in comparison. And he never stoops to character assassination and fear mongering. When he's face to face with the opposition, they're reduced to snarling their contempt for his "eloquence," because the ideas he conveys leaves them speechless and befuddled. Obama speaks to our better natures as Americans. And perhaps the problem with those he's unable to reach is, they simply don't have better natures.
Posted by: Dolmance | October 30, 2008 8:22 AM
Were you genuflecting or lighting incence candles to honor The Chosen One when you wrote this? Tell the truth -- Obama did this because he and his cohort, Joe "Loose Lips Sink Ships" Biden won't hold a press conference.
Posted by: JSmith | October 30, 2008 8:25 AM
JFK?...You ARE joking?...Right?
Posted by: Rabbitinred | October 30, 2008 8:26 AM
Correction: You mention "comedian Jon Stewart" In fact, it would be more accurate to say liberal comedian Jon Stewart. Afterall, he's the guy who called Gov. Palin a "jackass" on his Sept. 5th show, much to the screaming delight of his far left audience. To deny Jon Stewart is nothing more than a liberal comedian is to deny the truth.

"They find proof for it in the fact that in kindergarten I shared some toys with my friend…"
I assume that the friend gave Obama his toy back? Or did he let them keep it as in the case with taxes?
A certain German leader used the same tactic as Obama, to rise to power... and look where they ended up...

Scary. All this gushing and swooning over a politician frightens me. He's a man, just a man, and there are questions that no one seems to be able to get solid answers to. He did associate with Bill Ayers and he did have to know who Ayers was once he began the association. He did go to Wright's church for 20 years and listened to those sermons and thought nothing of them until they were shown to the general public. He does want to punish those who succeed; there is simply no other way to describe raising taxes on those who produce jobs and expand the economy. He does want to redistribute wealth; what else do you call giving $500 to someone who has no income tax liability? And where will that money come from? Of course it will come from the people who are already paying most of the income tax revenue in this country. These are not "charges", they are the truth.

Now, in 1999, during the clinton years, the law blurring non banking and banking activities was passed. That was crucial in its consequences on the economy today.
Also, el-qaeda did not suddenly turn up on 9/11/01. They were well known even during the clinton years but the clintons never did anything concrete. Then we got afghanistan.
And Iraq - that was perhaps bush's only real mistake. Yet, there too, the middle east could be shaped crucially and differently. If an independant kurdistan is allowed to be formed, it would send a clear message that the mideast is not only for arabs. It is for all the oppressed minorities that the arabs have repressed over the centuries.

Okay, you got this one right. Amazingly in the infomercial, Obama stated his case without attacking McCain, Bush or the Republicans by name and only tangentially by inferance(bad decisions of the past 8 yrs); he refuses to fight old battles. Obama has concrete focussed plans and he is looking forward. He inspires hope for the future and he should not scare any Americans other the wealthiest of war profiteers. He could indeed be the FDR we need right now.
Last nite's media blitz looked to these biased eyes as the deal closer.

For anyone who hasn't already voted, and those who haven't yet decided who to vote for:
Consider the "Wealth Redistribution" that will occur if, as he intends to do, Obama succeeds in giving:
(1) Amnesty, citizenship, and full voting rights
(2) Medical Insurance,
(3) Social Security, and
(4) Welfare, Food Stamps, etc.
to the 11 million (or more) Illegal Immigrants who
(A) are already here, plus
(B) the untold number who will come here immediately when they hear about it!
That will: (1) buy the democrats the votes of those people for a long time (the goal),
(2) require taxing a lot more than the "top 5%" to pay for it,
(3) bankrupt this country, and possibly bring on Socialism as a result (possible goal)
(4) happen if Obama is elected, with democrats controlling the House and Senate.
You can (A) vote to let it happen, or
(B) vote to prevent it.

What is most important for an Obama presidency, is that a majority of the people around the world (80%) would prefer that he be elected. That goes a long way toward healing the terrible rifts that have developed during the past eight years. It is points out the importance of choosing the candidate who has the most wisdom, the best common touch, and boundless energy and enthusiasm - which will be greatly needed, while tackling the enormous problems that this country faces due to the "slash and burn" policies of the current administration.

First it was McCain trying to distance himself from Bush - now it is Palin trying to distance herself from Stevens.
If the're turning their backs on their own Republican colleagues why shouldn't the electorate turn their backs on them?
Palin can't understand why she is not supported by American women - and then goes on to say this makes her more determined to continue.
Well - she's answered her own question: it's because she doesn't listen and cannot judge when the writing is on the wall.

Just because someone can make a speach or answer softball questions does not make him or her a great president. The fact that he can afford that much prime time airtime is a joke. Obama originally agreed to take public financing, to which McCain also agreed. However, when he figured he could take in a lot more money by not agreeing to take the matching money, he was able to raise hundreds of millions.
The definition of socialism is to take from the rich and give to the poor: from each according to his ability, to each according to his need. Obama keeps saying that only the rich got a tax cut under Bush - what a lie. I make under $60000 and I got a tax cut.

Another puff piece for Obama. Comparing Obama to JFK , the media is so in the bag for Obama the messiah. Obama gets caught in a lie, the media airbrushes over it. OBama is caught with Radicals and the media airbrushes over it. If Obama wins, the Media and 600 million will be the price tag.

Promises, promises, that's what politics feeds on. The Candidates promise lower taxes, plenty to eat, healthcare benefits, and JOBS. Guess what? If all the "programs" the candidates promise are put into play, who would end up paying for these programs..........Me and all other middle class folk who earn...yes, I said EARN a living (a paycheck), and lead productive lives will end up paying for these federal programs. Obama wants to TAX the middle class and the ones making $150K, $200K, $250K and "give" to the non-productive, non-working class segment of our population. Yes, there are the ones who truly need help but most of the able bodied non-productive segment who DON"T pay taxes will reap the benefits of getting some of my money. That sucks to say the least. Obama: who wants to take from the rich and give to the poor. Re-distribute the wealth sounds like Socialism to me. Obama has not revealed all that he intends to do regarding taxes. He wants to take my "fair share" and give to the non-productive. I want to call that type of taxation anti-productive in all respects. We as a nation are in trouble, big time, regarding national defense, and the economy, if the big "O" gets into office with a Democratic majority in Congress. Morons like Pelosie and her following will definitely screw things up. God help us.

Never have I seen my adult kids so enthused with politics. I know in my heart that this candidate can make a drastic change in this country.
He is intelligent, calm and rational. If he doesn't know the answer he seeks advice from the experts. He is humble beyond words. He takes the insults from the McCain camp with dignity. That shows me the kind of man he is. Honest and very capable of running this country. I have no doubt about him. I firmly believe he will make the best president is this time of our countries need for change.

I can't wait until this man is president. He is so caring and driven to helping us live the lives we dream of. No amount of fear-mongering and rumor-mongering by McCain and Palin will help them now. Americans see them and the GOP for what it is and what it has done to this fine nation. We deserve better than we've got for the past 8 years and we deserve better than the fear and divisiveness of McCain and Palin.

Oh good grief! Could the media be more in-love with a candidate? I wish y'all would listen to the message and stop listening to just Obama's slick-salesman-tone. Maybe the media types aren't making enough money in their jobs and they need to help Obama is offering. But I work hard for every dollar I earn and I don't think it's governments job to take it so other people can continue to work less hard. I wish the media would develop some no bias policies and stop fawning over this candidate.

The vehement anger displayed by many of the obviously conservative commenters here is astounding and disturbing. Don't folks understand that Mr. Zurawik's piece is a column, not a piece of news reporting, and thus the columnist is allowed and expected to express his opinion? If you disagree with it, say so, but be respectful. I have a feeling if Mr. Zurawik had had an equally positive impression of a McCain television appearance, and had expressed that, these folks would have nothing but praise for him.
Posted by: Curtis | October 30, 2008 10:19 AM
I just have one small vocabulary gripe. Did you really mean to say Obama's tone was jocular and 'bemused'? So he was both joking and bewildered? Or do you mean something along the lines of amused as opposed to bemuse?

You haters are amazing. Did you actually read before ranting? First off, Z is a CRITIC, not a NEWS JOURNALIST. If you are reading the TV section for hard news then this country is in more trouble than most people think. Secondly, nowhere does this article state that Obama is like JFK. The phrases used are "worthy of", "not seen since", "the best since". Not "just like". Get a grip and lose the hate and most of all READ BEFORE YOU COMMENT.
Posted by: Bruce | October 30, 2008 10:27 AM
I see the FauxNews/Drudge lunatics are out in force today talking about progressive taxes as socialism (which we've had for about a century); suspect associations (no mention in the comments of the AIP, Palin's church or Chuck Keating yet, I noticed); buying the election (not that these folks were complaining when Bush and the 527 drowned Kerry in money); or single party rule (which they didn't quite mind when it was their party a few years back).
Hypocrites, liars and fear-mongers. You gotta love 'em. You can usually spot them by the disproportionate use of CAPS in their comments.
Get use to saying President Obama or leave. That's an option too.

I thought candidates in elections were supposed to be allowed "equal time" for stating their case. I can't believe Obama paid over $4 million dollars for an infomercial. Obama is trying to buy election! What a joke! Obama lied about taking public financing, just as he lies about taking 43-45% of your hard earned paycheck, which he will "redistribute" to people who don't work even 1/4 as hard as you do. Do NOT be fooled by Obama's flowery rhetoric! He is trying to hoodwink and bamboozle you! to see more reasons not to vote Obama visit http://www.youtube.com/brightamericaneyes

QUOTE: "Obama is nowhere near JFK. Obama wants to pay for everything you want, which is just ridiculous and PURE SOCIALISM! Let's not forget JFK's great speech: "Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country." "
Actually, Obama has repeatedly stated that he is going to ask Americans to make sacrifices, to work hard, and to serve their communities and their country. He said several similar things in this ad. I thought it was very reminiscent of JFK.
There is a big difference between getting a handout for nothing, and getting what you earned through hard work. Obama repeatedly made statements in the ad that made it clear he wants people to get a decent reward for hard work, not that he wants to give them something for nothing.

Ok I come from Switzerland which is the least of the European Socialistic countries but it is still socialistic. SO here is what you will get if you live in Switzerland: 1) a progressive tax scale (about 20% to 40% max) 2) a cap on CEO salaries, if the company makes a large profit it has to trickle down: you may get a 13 month or even a 14 month salary instead of only 12 month salary. 3) 4 weeks paid vacation on top of an other 3 weeks of holidays (also paid). 4)free schools and universities 5) public transportation that is faster than using your own car. 6) Unlike other European countries you must buy your own health insurance (mandatory) from a private provider, there is a basic health plan and you can upgrade it (other countries have public health care systems, we don't) Still we have a free market, banking systems and have world leading companies such as Nestle, Novatris, ABB, Swatch ...
I don't know why you all think that socialism is so bad. It is not communism and they didn't survive, look at Russia and now look at China. Both have now more millionaires than the USA. By the way the USA had always a progressive taxation and Republicans and Democrats have used it in the past. The progression might be different. So ask yourself does this make one or the other a socialist or a Marxist?
Posted by: Swiss Guy | October 30, 2008 10:48 AM
Name one positive things JFK did as president which helped our country? He almost got us in a nuclear war with Russia. He was a great speaker, like Obama, a good looking man and a womanizer. He did nothing for his country in the short time he was president. The only reason he is idolized by many is that he was assassinated. And I, my first presidential vote, voted for this man, like a fool that I was.
Posted by: John Clariton | October 30, 2008 10:49 AM
Obama has been JFK from the start - always cool, self effacing and quick witted and always well dressed. Look at JFK's visuals and his press conferences and his campaigning. JFK as a young man had to look presidential, particularly in the light of Ike. And Obama has done the exact same thing. Obama's only misstep was the overconfidence between Iowa and New Hampshire and he corrected himself quickly. JFK in his campaign evoked competence and change and so does Obama.

Obama message = hope, unity
McCain message = fear, divisiveness
Obama's 30 minutes last night brought this home quite clearly.
As for those of you deriding Mr. Zurawik's views, remember that he is a critic who provides commentary, not a news anchor.

JFK was a hero in WWII PT Boats. JFK's speeches not only had style they had substance, direction, and purpose.
Obama's message is clear: lets put everyone elses stuff in a grab bag and take it.
He is no JFK

I most unfortunately missed Obama's campaign special last night.. I scoured the internet in search of reviews and details. They were very positive.
Then I read McCain's interview with Larry King where he tried to imply (yet again) that Obama himself is responsible for all of the character assassination because Obama refused to sit with McCain for some town meetings.
A relative then sent me an e-mail about how Michelle Obama racked up a $500 lobster bill at the Waldorf Astoria in New York the very day that she was giving a speech in Indiana. (Oh those Obama's, with their ability to warp space and time!).
I then read all the posts on these blogs and the most hateful, ugliest, nastiest remarks are from people identifying themselves as McCain supporters.
I continually go between articles that inspire hope to a bunch of whiners complaining about how nothing is fair and everything "their" fault.
The Republican Party has been hijacked by pathetic, uneducated whiners, who are so desperate that they can't even fact check a slur against someone's reputation before passing the lie along. Y'all have just gone plain Ugly Psycho.
Everyone keeps saying we have a choice. As far as I can see, there is no choice. There's only one sane option, and that option is Barack Obama.

Obama is a very impressive man. He's bright, he's real, he listens, he consults. I pray he wins handsomely and gets his shot at change. And that when he is in the White House, he doesn't let us down. I think he has the potential to be one of the greatest American presidents ever and to lead not just the USA but the whole world out of the mess we are all in together. Go Obama!

I believe Obama is atleast as great a leader as JFK. I have more hope in Obama than I would have for JFK. While Obama has the energy, determination and leadership skills of JFK, he does not have the negatives of JFK, which should make Obama one of the greatest historic Presidents of USA. History will compare him to Abe Lincoln and he will leave a lasting mark on the Nation and the world comparable to that of Lincoln.
Excited to live during Obama presidency.

Man, Z, God forbid you should make an accurate, bipartisan observation about Obama's TV skills. The backlash you're getting is ridiculous! C'mon McCain backers, even if you don't support Obama, how can you ignore his strong ability to use TV to his advantage (and the Internet too). McCain isn't credited as using TV as well BECAUSE HE DOESN'T! It's a fact, and if facts get you upset, then don't read stories like this one. Read the other stuff on the website or in the newspaper about whatever you want to accept as not being a liberal conspiracy.
Posted by: Craig | October 30, 2008 11:26 AM
McCain (and his supporters) just keep whining that it's not fair that Obama's got a TV special... like it's the money that's causing their slip in the polls.
What McCain and his supporters need to understand is that Obama has gotten a lot of donations to his campaign because American citizens BELIEVE in him. There are people who barely have $20 dollars in their wallet, and they're willing to send it to the Obama campaign because they're sick of Bush/McCain politics.
McCain is an empty suit. He wants to say he's got a lot of experience? Well why didn't he fix some of these problems when he had the chance? He's a Maverick? Well, not when you vote with Bush over 90% of the time! He's trying to use scare tactics by saying Obama isn't experienced enough, but then he chooses Palin who is not only completely ignorant, but she might even be our president if he can't finish his term because of his age. Then he plays up this "Joe the plummer guy", who's not even a real plummer (GOP shill anyone?), who is now attending the rallies and talking about foreign policy!
How can ANY sane person think that McCain would be a good president? McCain's "judgement" would be horrible for our country!
Obama embodies all the traits we should DEMAND of the President of the United States. His TV special, which was concerned with the challenges of the middle class and our economy, did not spend one second smearing McCain. This is a testament to what Obama really cares about – the American people. Attacking McCain has nothing to do with it. Besides, McCain and Palin are doing just fine smearing themselves on a daily basis!
There's only one candidate worthy of the presidency and that's BARACK OBAMA!

Honest, sincere, moving, positive, inspiring, elegant, intelligent, confidant, united, sharp, and real are some words that describe Obama's TV presentation.
Any negative comments that the Republicans and their supporters express is just about jealousy, regret, undermining, discrediting, sabotage, and envy.
There is no comparison to Obama, who is a decent man that has integrity and passionately supports and wants to work for the people. When was the last time we've had any candidate that even comes close to this?
And to a man, McCain, that is all about his wealth and greed, his buddies’ wealth and greed, and ego.
These two candidates represent totally different ideals.

It is exactly this messiah like following that is so scary. Look BO has changed his tune at every fork in the road where he needed to cultivate votes. Anything he has said or done in the past is discounted if it is not constructive to his election. Past speeches, current speeches, relationships, advisers - all things that tell of his character are tossed out the window by his followers. Cult leader is probably the best description of this guy. There is no doubt he is effective, but his character will come through once elected. My guess is alot of his followers project their ideals onto him, whether real or not. Then they look for the data points to validate their view and they throw out the ones that don't. Zurawik is just oneof these kool aid drinkers... BO and the dem lead congress - this is the acceleration of the decline of this once great nation. When a person defends the right to abort babies up to full term, and denies live born aborted babies medical care, and then supports criminal rights and early release - you know the persons world view is messed up - screw the defenseless and support the criminal - great!

I thought it was brilliant. Perhaps more like FDR's fireside chats than like JFK. Obama comes across as genuine, intelligent, and compassionate. The program was all about reminding us who this election really is about: the struggling middle class, who have worked hard all their lives and are now seeing their dreams slip away because of Republican greed.
I don't know what effect it will have on undecideds, but I expect it will strongly mobilize Obama's already very enthusiastic base. At this point, all we have to do is get the vote out.
To all the Republicans in this thread -- scared much? Your fear and anger do not become you. Lead to the dark side they do. Just relax. Obama's presidency will benefit you enormously, whether you like it or not.
Great stuff. I love the FDR comparison, and I think you are right. I was afraid to go apaples and oranges, but it works the way you did it. Thanks. Z

It's great that we the American people get to go to the polls on Tuesday and vote for who we think will return America to prominence. It doesn't matter whether you are white or black, just back your candidate and vote your conscience. You may not like the candidate I support, that is your right to do so, but I won't stoop to make fun of your choice or rely on shameless "lies" or manipulations just because you do not agree with me. I choose to vote for Obama because right now I believe he is the right person for us. Now all you haters can blog about my comment and that's your right to do so. Positive is better than negative. I gravitate toward the positive. By positive I mean not just optimism and collegiality, but proof positive. I look at the facts. A blitz of posts from the McCain campaign rudely, crudely, and bitterly shouting transparent misrepresentations really hurts the McCain campaign. If McCain supports this kind of nasty, misleading campaigning, then it really hurts his own stature.

The choice in this election is simple – should we have a government which enables those who cannot do for themselves become those who are willing and able to the point where government support is not longer needed, OR one which supports those who are unwilling and incapable to the point where government intervention is expected and never-ending ?! No question that sacrifices are always necessary, and tough choices need to be made. That noted, no democracy and no form of capitalism can survive a system which penalizes hard work and entrepreneurship in favor of subsidization and excessive transfer payments.

Try C-SPAN radio - 90.1 FM if you are in the Baltimore/Washington area. Or C-SPAN radio on-line. It comes in fine with dial-up, especially if you click RealMedia over to the right.

Thank you, David, for a great column.

Yes, many of those making comments are correct. Obama is nowhere near JFK. Obama is a loyal family man with no evidence of ties to the mob. Oh, how quickly America forgets....

oh puleeez! The author should just go to guyana if they're going to drink that much kool-aid This is the biggest load of crap ever handed to the people of this country. it only proves that money doesn't make the man and you can't turn an inexperienced idealog into a viable candidate unless you use guerilla tactics. Go read the transcripts of chavez and castro while they were campaigning to crash their democracies too. The resemblance is uncanny. Get a grip amerika.

First, thanks for the column -- I enjoyed it, more so because I'm trapped in a Republican household (my in-laws' in Virginia). Just wanted to add my "get a clue, ignorant haters" and point out that the supreme irony is that the "red" states who decry "government handouts" and cry "socialism" are actually the ones that benefit the most from federal funds. Check the facts!

Take my advice. Sell every stock you own and buy Muni bonds. Take off the next four years to avoid paying high income taxes and supporting this nut job. Talk about out of touch...raise taxes on the people that creat jobs!! Oh and you middle class people who are willing to take a $1000 tax rebate and in turn lose your job!!! Wake up!!! Sorry this guy has not a clue of what's needed right now and an ego that won't ever let him "change" his mind. Good luck if he our only hope...

Interesting how the Obamanites keep bringing up hate on this blog. This is just a tactic to shut down the opposing view. If you can't engage on the details of the issue - attack them personally to throw them off. The liberals like to speak of tolerance as long as you agree with their opinion but take an opposing view and you are full of hate. Iv'e read most of the posts and I do not see anything that smacks of hate. Obama and Pelosi are out to do the same by instituting the fairness doctrine - shut down the opposition through political tactic. The liberal agenda is the biggest threat to the right to free speech.
Joe
You say positive is better. But you clearly give Obama an out when he rails on McCain about the Bush economy. It is common knowledge that the seeds of our economic situation were planted by Clinton and Frank in 1999. Well documented - google it. The issue was exacerbated by the dem controlled congress when they derailed legislation that McCain help write that could have head off the credit crisis. The situation we all are suffering is the result of democratic political greed. The people of this country gorged itself on credit card debt, using their houses as an ATM and buying homes they could not afford. And your guy blames McCain in order to confuse the public and gain votes. Right, positive.
The only resemblance Obama has to JFK is the cult like following. His ideals, his plans for the country, his character, are all extremely different than JFK, more like a combination of Rev Wright, William Ayers, Farrakhan, etc. - the people he has consorted with the last few years.

TV Critic. Follow that, folks?
He's not the editor of the paper. He's supposed to present his biased opinion of what he sees on TV. He thought the program was well-produced. (SHOCKING!) And he thinks Obama comes across well on TV. (BLASPHEMER!)

"McCain might be not be the best choice, but he is the lesser of two evils and less likely to limit the rights I currently enjoy every day as an American."
Jeremy, I'm curious....exactly what rights that you currently enjoy do you expect to have taken away? There can't be too many left, since so many were already taken away by Bush. But seriously, I'm interested in your answer.

We need to judge candidates basded upon deeds not words. McCain's record holds up very well versus any candidate the Dem's have rolled out in the last 3 elections. Obama is an embarassment in terms of achievement. After the Wall Street guys, we shouldn't place a lot of hope in a smart guy, in a nice suit, who is very eloquent. If he was a cowboy, he'd be all hat, no horse.

Wow!!! If Obama gets elected, he is going to need a real life Jack Ryan watching his back with all of these bitter knives being thrown. Maybe the liberals wouldn't keep "bringing up the hate to shut down the opposing view" if it served a purpose. Why don't you talk about your candidate and what he going to do differently other than suspend his campaign to come back and offer nothing useful but his crusty mug; or continue a war that will ruin us financially. Your man is toast, but if you want to get the hate off your chest be my guest. I guess that is what forums like this are for.

When did "blog" turn into "news"? And since when do critics report news and not opinions? If you don't like the writer's opinions, go back to your Faux News. There you can read all the "fair and balanced" news you want. And if you ever want to return to reality, please come back to the real world, real opinions, and real news.

Several things in reading these comments - the author of this article is a critic, an entertainment critic at that. He is simply reviewing the entertainment media, which includes TV and of which Obama was a great part of last night. So the author, as a critic, is offering a review, which is an opinion. That is NOT the same as a balanced news article and does not HAVE to be balanced since it is an opinion/review article, not a news article.
Secondly, in reading the many comments that followed, it becomes quite clear that the people who are against Obama are VERY quick to resort immediately to name-calling (i.e. - "stupid") or insulting accusatory remarks (i.e. - "are you on crack?"). Why such violent, negative attitudes? And why are you not able to post intelligent debate, instead of immediately using incendiary, divisive language?
PS to Joe, who posted the "candidates tax plans" - the Wall Street Journal is no longer a viable resource. Since it is now owned by Rupert Murdoch, who also owns Fox Republican Propaganda News - and who embodies the true, typical CONSERVATIVE media owner and negates the lie perpetuated by the myth of a "liberal media" - the Wall Street Journal can no longer be trusted to be balanced nor accurate.

It is absolutely amazing there are so many people on this blog that harbor so much hate, resentment, and, yes, jeolously, against one of the very, very best presidential candidates in our history. In all aspects, Senator Obama is head and shoulders above
the tired, old, washed-out politician, John McCain and his bimbo, Sarah Palin. Both of these people see TWO different Americas: The patriotic, Pro-American, Real American, and God-loving folks that live in little pockets in Virginia and other states nearby; AND what they must consider unpatriotic, un-American, Anti-American, and none-believers in God. Candidates who label parts of the country like this are shameful and have NO business anywhere near the White House. EVERYONE in America is patriotic and PRO American, REAL American and everyone has his choice of religion/faith. Just who do McCain and Palin think they are to judge and put us in separate little "boxes" according to how THEY DETERMINE??? Good riddance to these Hitler-type candidates. Next thing we know, they'll be building furnances for all of us who do not agree with them!!!

Z-...and JFK?.....yes, very similar as Joe Kennedy bought that election with the help of the very corrupt Chicago political machine as well.
I think TV has scrambled your brain.
"They walk among us!"....same question I have been asking Bill "hide the cigar" Clinton supports for years. Name one thing he has done that made him great? I always seem to get the same blank look and the answer, "well a lot of things".
All of those drugs your parents took in the 60's really did a number on you and your Barry Obama buddies.
Keep turning on and tuning out.
Don't tell me, Barney Frank fan too-right?
Oh god help us!

Barack Obama has not associated with "Rev." Wright and his "church", Louis Farrakhan, "Father" Phleger, Tony Rezko, William Ayers & Bernadine Dohrne, Rashid Khalidi, Mazen Asbahi, ACORN, and abortion extremists IN SPITE of their offensive or criminal activities, but BECAUSE of them! That's what ATTRACTS him to them!

So the wealthy are greedy? Fxxx that, I don't care to work my axx off and be called greedy. I'll spend my time on leisure time, make 249 a year and keep 50 cents on every dollar. I don't care to risk my home, work 14 hour days to earn a dollar & spread the wealth.
Posted by: wealthy greedy capitalist | October 31, 2008 12:49 AM
Yo lightin...
Where did you come up with this?
You must be drinkin' something the rest of us want or don't need.
Or maybe its in the Halloween brownies that you are cookin'.
You are so prejudice in your Bu_ _ Sh _ _ that I think I know where it is coming from.
It definitely is not based on fact that is searchable. Let us in on your secret stash er... source.

Hey Freejung - You wanted to know if we are "scared much"? You bet I am. Scared that in ten years this country is going to look more like Cuba than the U.S. and dictator-for-life Obama is still the "president." Equally scary - a large number of people in this country either like that scenario or cannot see the obvious.

PS - to John (comment at 1:59pm on 10/30) -
Hello, Kettle? This is the Pot calling.
The Republicans have been the biggest threat to free speech for the past 7 years. They used 9/11 as an excuse to call anyone who disagreed with them "un-patriotic". And they said that about people who were doing something as American as voicing their opinion. That is one of the tactics that Fascists use. And it was very clear when Bush said, "You are either with us, or against us" that they were going to continue to use those same fascist, divisive tactics to practically rip the Constitution to shreds.
We care about this country just as much as you do, so please don't try the "un-patriotic" tactic. I'm not "shutting you down" either. You and I are both entitled to our opinion, because that's the American way.
And your facts are off. Senator Phil Gramm, a Republican, authored the legislation that rescinded the Glass-Steagall Act during Clinton's last two years in office, when the Republicans had control of Congress. The purpose of this legislation was to de-regulate the banks, which lead to our current financial crisis. President Clinton signed it into law after the Republicans threatened to overturn a veto if he didn't sign it. This is the same type of deregulation that happened during Reagan/Bush's reign in the late '80s which lead to the real estate and Wall Street crash in '87 ("trickle-down" economics doesn't work against true laissez-faire economics). These are the same principles that conservatives were using just prior to the Stock Market crash of '29 as well. In 1929 and 1987, it took Democrats: FDR and Clinton, to get us out of those depressions/recessions and lead us to our most prosperous times as a country. And it's going to take another Democrat to clean up the same mess yet again.

I can make a summary of all of Sen. O'Bama's critics. You are Afraid! You are Afraid of doing something different. You would rather hold on to something that is old, rotten and stinking than believe that change is inevitable. I was taught that Insanity can be described as repeating the same things over and over again yet expecting different results. My hope is that we as a country have a moment of sanity. "Let go of your fear, for the change is due!"
