Sykesville's Drew Stevyns performs on 'America's Got Talent' finals

Last week, I chatted with Sykesville singer Drew Stevyns as he waited backstage for the America's Got Talent results show to begin so he could learn whether he'd made the finals.

He did.

Last night, the Top 10 performed for votes for the last time, but they won't learn their fates until tomorrow night.

Drew performed "I'll Stand By You," and the judges thought he did an outstanding job.

The judges, however, seemed to think just about everyone did an outstanding job, even when they didn't. They fawned all over chicken farmer Kevin Skinner, but his singing was pretty terrible.

I thought Drew did well, but I think he might be outshone by some of the flashier acts that seem more to scream "Vegas!" than he does, especially Recycled Percussion and the Fab Five.

We'll see how it plays out on Wednesday. (Also, by the way, British everywoman singing sensation Susan Doyle will be performing.)

What did you think of last night's performances?

I thought the opera singer Padilla was sensational. She should be singing at the Met right now!

/While I agree Padilla's voice and performance were sensational, I can't see Las Vegas for her. She has way too much class.
Recycled percussion is loud and obnoxius, and Grandma Lee an embarrassment.

I think Barbara Padilla is an excellent singer, but I don't see how she would be a good act for a Vegas show. There are definitely a few other acts (Grandma Lee, Fab 5, and Recycled Percussion) that I could see doing much better as a Vegas show.

We should all be very proud of Drew. He has done a magnificent job on the show. He is the only "wild card" to have ever made the top 10 on that show. Of all ten acts, his is the only one I could stand for more than 10 minutes to watch and the only I would buy a ticket to see!

Barbara P. singing touches me so that I cry; Skinner was flat again, the tenors are no match for ol'Blue Eyes (how dare they try?), the Fab 5 are a great mini Rockettes act (I love their presisetion), Torrres failed, the VofG are sweet but not worth 1 million, Grandma Lee is a hoot (love her), the other two male singers are average. My money is on Barbara.

I like Drew a lot. I hope he gets picked up. He should have a bright future ahead.

So Kevin Skinner wins - and this show is called WHAT??!! Sure, the guy is humble and likeable, but so were all of them. He can't sing!!! PERIOD. Unbelievable. For all you toneless people who voted for him, let's see how many of you really go sit thru his Vegas show!

All you people bashing Kevin Skinner remind me of Kanye West at the VMA Awards. Way to GO! Like the old saying goes, "if you can't say anything nice, then don't say anything at all".

drew stevyns should ahve won

drew stevyns should have won he has an awesome voice and is really good i hope he gets his dream

I can't believe Kevin Skinner won.. that's very surprising. I thought Kevin Skinner did well in the earlier rounds but his voice was very shaky and poor in the final performance. I was waiting for the judges, Pierce especially, to criticise him after his last performance because it didn't sound good. I even thought they might buzz him.

Barbara Padilla and Drew Stevyns were the best acts in my opinion. I actually thought maybe they mixed up Drew and Kevin's names in the results or something... Anyway.. I hope Drew's music career takes off and that his chance isn't hindered too much by the poor voting / result.

All in all - there was great talent this year. I think definitely the strongest Top 10 of the seasons so far. I think all the singing acts could easily become successful if they put some time and work into it. It will be tougher for the other acts to break through though.
