'So You Think You Can Dance': And the winner is ...
It's finale night on So You Think You Can Dance, which, of course, means soon(ish) we'll know who the winner is.
The show opens with the Top 20 reprising the group dance to "Brand New Day," with more focus put on Kayla, Brandon, Evan and Jeanine. There will be more season highlights to come in this two-hour extravaganza.
Host Cat Deeley reveals that 21.6 million votes were cast last night. The judges' table is packed with choreographers: Lil C, Mia Michaels, Tyce DiOrio, Debbie Allen, Adam Shankman, Mary Murphy and Nigel Lythgoe.
The finale is two hours, so there is a lot of revisiting going on -- first of the whole season, then of last night's performances.
Each judge names a favorite performance, which we get to see again. First is Jeanine and Phillip's hip-hop number from the first Top 20 episode. (They get a standing ovation from Shane Sparks, among others.) Nigel's fave is Brandon and Janette's Argentine tango. I'm embarrassed that the first time they did this dance, I didn't recognize how awesome it was.
Debbie Allen's favorite is Asuka and Viotlio's waltz by Louis van Amstel that told a story about Vitolio's struggles in his life. Mary Murphy's fave is Travis Wall's number with Jeanine and Jason. Good choice -- I get chills and tears. Mia Michaels' choice is Maks and Kayla's samba (another Louis number). It's good, and just makes me think, again, that Maks went home way too soon.
After that, the Top 4 get a surprise, meeting up with Kherington, who gives them a preview of Fame, which Kherington stars in. (How did I not know that?)
Debbie Allen's reprisal request is the Top 16 group dance to "Calle Ocho." (Oh, Janette, how we miss you!)
An unexpected treat this evening is a performance by the So You Think You Can Dance: Australia winner Talia Fowler.
Lil C's choice is Caitlin and Jason's Bollywood routine. C talks a lot, and eventually they get to dance. I had forgotten how good -- and difficult -- this routine was. They are awesome.
At long last, it's time for some results. Cat announces the fourth-place finisher, and it is Kayla. That's pretty surprising. I didn't expect that she would win because she didn't seem to connect with the audience as well as some others, but I didn't expect fourth place. Kayla says that one of her favorite moments was working with Mia, and she says she's going to miss everyone. She's going to have a career after this, though, win or no win. It was pretty obvious that Evan wasn't going to be out, since he hadn't performed yet.
Adam picks another fave: Randi and Evan's "butt dance" by Mia. My mom hates that one, but I still think it was one of Evan's best dances. Jeanine and Brandon revisit their paso -- yep, the one from last night -- which is one of Mary's choices. It still rocks, even though we saw it only 24 hours ago.
Then, more results: Evan has still only performed once, so I think he's probably safe. But I am wrong because Evan is out. He is choked up talking about how thankful he is for the support of his fans and his family. He is so sweet.
Nigel says one of his favorite moments was when Mary admitted to using Botox. Ha! (She doesn't seem that amused.) In seriousness, he calls Mia Michaels' addiction routine with Kayla and Kupono one of the best moments of the season. This was also a good one, very powerful.
Back by popular demand is the Rage Boyz Crew, the cutie kids who performed earlier this season. They are so adorable.
Tyce DiOrio requests Janette and Brandon's disco routine, you know the crazy-insane fast one? Yeah, that one. Still missing Janette in this Top 4.
Mia's request is Tyce's routine about breast cancer. Before Melissa and Ade perform, Tyce announces that his friend Michelle, whom he choreographed the dance for, learned today that she is cancer-free. More tears from me, and that's even before the dance.
After that, the Top 8 perform the Broadway number to "One," with a guest appearance by the judges. They look SO happy on stage, it's very sweet.
And now, the last of the results. Will it be Brandon or Jeanine?
The winner is: Jeanine Mason! She really did peak at the right time.
"I never though I would be giving an acceptance speech at the Kodak," she says, "but I thank the Academy!" She also thanks her mom for pushing her through the part of her dancing career when she didn't like it for a bit. She actually gets to talk for a while, longer than I can remember a winner getting to talk in a while.

I had a feeling Jeanine was going to win! I love her she is an amazing dancer! I voted for her, bravo and congratulations! I have been watching the show from season 1 and will keep on watching!

I would like to know if those counting the votes for "So you think you can dance" knew the line for Brandon was shut down around 10:30 here on the East coast in my area. That gave us who wanted to vote for Brandon only 30 minutes to vote for him. I hope this does not happen next year.

Thank you for the recap. I wasn't able to watch it, and I've been looking everywhere for the results.

I was not unhappy to see Jeanine win, although I thought Brandon was the best dancer all season. The one major "faux pas" of the evening was no one got to hear from Brandon - he just got pushed off to the side. Evan (who I don't think belonged in the top 4) got to thank everyone. Brandon definitely got the short end of the stick tonight. Didn't they give Katie a special prize last year for second place? Something they should definitely do. But yeah Jeanine!!So many great dancers and I can't wait to see them live at the Coliseum with my 9 year old daughter.

I think Jeanine was wonderful, but what a shame that Kaylie did not win. She was and is the best dancer and was ignored because of it. How sad. No matter how much Jeanine peaked, Kaylie is a better dancer.

"It was pretty obvious that Evan wasn't going to be out, since he hadn't performed yet"
In previous seasons, they have kicked off finalists before their dances (though I don't know how a dancer could muster up the energy to perform after finding out that they lost!)
Sooo delighted that Jeanine won! :)
Not quite as delighted at the sight of Debbie Allen's boobs! :S

My favorites were the final two, and I'm so glad Jeanine won! She was strong in every dance, and so beautiful and humble. She is a great role model for young women - strong, healthy, sexy, and beautiful. Great show tonight!

I am ssssoooooo happyyyyyy! I knew that she would win......I missed it because I had to work but I looked it up......brandon just seem that he knew he had it but bam! I guess he didn't. I didn't care to much for him.....

I'm sad! No reprisal of Ashley and Kupono's Wade Robson xD
SKK: Oh, that was a good one, too. Most of the featured pairs dances, though, were with the Top 10.

WTF, what a disappointing season. With the loss of Janette and Kayla in fourth, and Brandon in second. The best 2 girls were Janette and Kayla with Melissa in third. After watching all the "best" dances of the season, I really was disappointing. Of course there were some good dances, but not enough. I wish the judges would stop saying that this season out shined the rest.

Great recap, SKK. I agree with everything you wrote, except that I thought having the judges dance a few steps was rather cheesy, personally. (Was Lil' C missing from that lineup, btw?)
The reprised numbers were great and I especially liked seeing Philip and Jeanine's fantastic hip hop number--we should have known then that Jeanine would be a keeper.
I think America got the order of the final 4 exactly right.
Jeanine said something at the end about dancing with injuries--did we miss something there?
SKK: I think they must have glossed over that. I would be willing to bet that everyone was at least a little injured. Brandon said something during his interview with Cat on Wednesday that every part of his body was in pain. They don't seem to ramp up the injuries for drama like Idol does when people get sick. In short: I dunno!
Posted by: Dahlink | August 7, 2009 6:49 AM
Doesn't it bother anyone that Brandon didn't win? I loved Jeanine but was she really BETTER than Brandon. I think not and therefore SYTYCD has become American Idol. Reduced to a popularity contest steamrolled by those who buy disposable cell phones for cramming the ballot box so to speak. Adam and Brandon will no doubtedly go bigger than the runners up who won but FOX is turning off a lot of people with trying to win the numbers game themselves. SHAME ON THEM. Network greed is the winner!
SKK: They do say it is the search for "America's favorite dancer," not "best," probably because they realize that most TV viewers wouldn't necessarily recognize the best technique.

Yay, Jeanine! I'm really surprised that Brandon didn't win -- and would have been just as happy if he did -- but I was rooting for Jeanine. She showed tremendous versatility over the season, and just has one of those warm and likable personalities to go with her dance talent. I'm glad she and Brandon were the final two, because they generally were the two I most enjoyed this season. Good finale (despite the usual 1:58 of filler and two minutes of drama these things always seem to include!). I'm also glad the show will be back in the fall instead of us having to wait until next summer.

Wow i really thought Brandon should have won and after 10:30 i also could not vote so how fear was that, so the east coast was shut down early im from Rhode Island
Posted by: David Cameron | August 7, 2009 10:22 AM
Nigel, please, for the sake of the show's future, do not consider Paula Abdul for anything but a Choreographer spot, if at all. You might also need to restrict her drug use and limit her stumbling for words and rambling.
Posted by: TBR | August 7, 2009 10:37 AM
Jeanine was good, however Brandon was great and clearly the winner. Dogged by Mia and L'il C at the beginning of the season, Brandon continued to come on strong every routine. Also having the phone lines close at 10:30 on the east coast was a disadvantage to all. I must say though that this was the best top 20 in the shows's history. Still a Brandon fan!!!

I really enjoyed this season, but extremely disappointed by the results. Jeanine is a good dancer with great personality, but she is not even near or in the same league as Brandon or Kayla. Brandon should have won last night. I was extremely disappointed. I think the show was rigged.
Posted by: Shell | August 7, 2009 10:45 AM
To find a male dancer mastering all the forms as Brandon does is commendable. Brandon was the most focused and creatively sound dancer on the show from day one.He brought to the end.
What else could he have done to be chosen as Americas' favourite dancer? And what about shutting down the East Coast line before time, so people couldn't vote. Watch this!

Dahlink,
From what I heard Jeanine injured herself practicing for the Send in the Clowns routine. In the dance, she walked along the edge of the box and at one point in rehearsal she was asked to try and run it. Apparently she slipped and ended up with a rather large gash on her right shin. If you look at the rehearsal footage from the finale show you can see that she has it wrapped up during her sessions.
Hope this answers your question...TVGuide told me this.
SKK: Thanks for the info, MDW.

while I agree that Brandon was the better dancer, who cares who is the "winner"? Just like on American Idol, the top ones get to tour, and will get jobs as choreographers and in the movies and Broadway. Brandon is saying SHOW ME THE MONEY!!!
Posted by: JCBaby | August 7, 2009 11:42 AM
They are all talented dancers, but Jeanine is "America's Favorite," and has been mine all season. I think she was consistent and awesome throughout. I mean, her first routine of the season was hip hop and she blew it ouf of the water. I would've loved to have seen Jeanine and Kayla do hip hop for their final routine because I don't think Kayla could've kept up with Jeanine. I was surprised at the praise Kayle (not Kaylie) received for the ONE hip hop number she did because she didn't hit any of the movement hard enough. I do think she should've finished third, though. I also wish people would get over Janette. Her final solo was beyond amatuerish as she tried to put too much contemporary in it instead of sticking with what she knew. It exploiter her weaknesses -- lack of extension/height in leaps and height in kicks. She'd probably tell you the same thing. Sometimes taking the risks works, but in her case, it did not.

Brandon was without question the best, and the only way he could have lost is that the powers that be CHEATED! big time. I knew there was a problem with the lines because my daughter could never get through and I was at a different location never got a busy signal when I dialed. Brandon was treated like chopped liver. He was pushed aside and was never allowed to say anything. He did come in second, and should have been treated better. Evan, came in third and he was allowed to speak I don't think I will be watching this show anymore. They are full of it!.
SKK: I definitely think it was a bad oversight to not let Brandon talk after the announcement. But as for being treated like chopped liver during the whole season? Mary and Nigel have been in his corner since day one and Mia and Lil C seem to have gotten over whatever that mess was at the beginning of the season when they were so horrible to him. Whether the phone lines didn't work is a separate issue, I think.

Brandon is the "Picasso of Dance" and should have duly been rewarded. Jeanine is a dedicated and skilled dancer and an absolute pleasure to watch but is not in the same league as Brandon. Brandon brings a vitality to the stage the holds you captive. he is truly amazing and hope he has an amazing career. I would defintiely pay to see Brandon dance.
It is a real shame how he was summarily dismissed at the announcement of Jeanine's name. He wasn't even given the opportunity to speak. Am sure he must have been overwhelmed at that moment. All I can say is BRAVO FOR BRANDON. YOUR EXCELLENCE IS RECOGNIZED.
Posted by: Ed | August 7, 2009 1:22 PM
Everybody's complaining about how Brandon was the best dancer on the show since day 1. But if you guys think about it...when has the best dancer really won? Travis was better than Benji, Danny was way better than Sabra. Will was a bit better than Joshua. It is probably the only show where the judges have at least "some" control over who gets in the top 4.

I had problems getting through as well but would not give up. It was obvious Brandon was the better dancer, even the winner was shocked. I am deeply saddened by the fact that people who wanted to vote for Brandon could not get through. I feel the management of this reality show needs to address this immediately. Brandon will probably have a better career due to this mis-treatment.

MDW--thanks for the information on the injury--I missed the bandages.
One other thought--Nigel kept going on and on all season about how short Evan was, but when Evan and Brandon were side by side, Brandon wasn't that much taller. I was sorry he wasn't given a few moments to say something when he was named first runner-up.
Posted by: Dahlink | August 7, 2009 4:54 PM
The person who should have won, did win. Jeanine was great. Why is everyone so inlove with Brandon!? He's got the personality of a carrot. He has that weird smile on his face all the time. Yah he's good but whatever. They're all good. Which one of you hating on any of these dancers can outdance them? None of you can even make it through the audition process of the show, so shut your mouth you can't judge.
Posted by: sytycd | August 7, 2009 5:29 PM
Did anyone else notice that Brandon was NOT in the group of dancers that surrounded Jeanine at the end of the show??
I was really surprised that he didn't take it. And I agree that they gave him short shrift after the winner was announced.
Posted by: Anna | August 7, 2009 5:59 PM
I was very disappointed with the outcome of the finale of SYTYCD! Jeanine was the last person I thought would wind up as the winner considering how many times she was voted into the bottom two. Brandon was a much better dancer and the judges praised him for his dancing abilities throughout the entire episode. What happened? Was this a popularity contest or a dance off? I'm confused! If the public gets to determine who wins the dance off without having much to little experience with dance styles and how they are executed then what are the judges there for? This show turned out to be a popularity test and the best dancer lost out not to someone who could out dance him but to someone who had a bigger fan base. Is it that SYTYCD doesn't want to have two black dancers win back to back so they decided to cheat and mix it up by making a mediocre dancer a winner?
What a sham. I know that Brandon and Janette will go on to be great dancers; Jeanine will probably continue to win popularity tests. This was my first time watching SYTYCD. Now that I know that the game is about popularity and not dancing I have no future interests in watching the show.
I'm disappointed that the panel had a part in this injustice.

I had problems voting for Brandon and what a shame. He should have won. Jeanine who? I think that the judges caused Brandon and Kayla's failure to win by giving them too much praise and adolation at the start of the show. Honestly, I think that the show is fixed and regardless of who America picks, the producers are going to give the title to who ever they want. Look at the winners--A black girl, white boy two I believe, black boy, and white or mexican girl. I will not watch the show anymore too desperate for me.
Posted by: Brenda | August 7, 2009 6:20 PM
Just an FYI, the second place finisher wins $50,000. Katee actually finished third, but being the highest finishing girl, recieved $50,000, just like Twitch. Also, when Josh won, Twitch didn't get to speak or anything either. At least Brandon got a goodbye package--Twitch didn't get one of those.

How delightful to find out that my former student and editor of the school newspaper is writing a blog about my favorite guilty pleasure: SYTYCD! I read it after every episode, Sarah--so thank you for your comments. None of my friends are into it, so now I have someone to "talk" to about the show.
I'm happy that a girl won, although I would have supported any of the top four. And yes, I realized how much I missed Jeanette after watching the finale.
This was a good season and now I am looking forward to season six.
Ellen
SKK: Hi, Ellen! So good to see you here!
Posted by: Ellen | August 8, 2009 11:13 AM
News flash for Evonne--the contest isn't for best dancer, but for the "favorite" dancer, so yes, it is all about popularity. The judges have influence in the first part of the season, but as it progresses, the cuts are made purely on the votes.
Now if there were problems with the voting, that is a shame, but I'd like to point out that the official results matched the voting here on the blog pretty well (the last time I checked anyway).

Hi all! To Anna and how she thought Brandon was not on the stage. He was. So many people were hugging him and he got lost in the crowd. I thought the same thing, but thank God I have Tevo or DVR and was able to rewind and I finally saw him. I would love to have seen him say f* it and leave, but he was a gentleman and was definitely on the stage. Keep blogging and peace!!!
SKK: Thanks for the info, Brenda. Glad to hear he was there.
