'So You Think You Can Dance': Two more are cut
What's the best part of Thursdays? So You Think You Can Dance group performance! Tonight's results show kicks off with a powerful Mia Michaels routine to Stevie Wonder's "Higher Ground." So. Good.
We're wasting little time, at least for now, and getting straight to the results. The first three couples hit the stage to find out where they stand. Ade and Melissa are first -- and they're safe. Caitlin and Jason have to wait until Cat Deeley talks to Phillip and Jeanine first. They learn that one is definitely in the bottom three, and it's Caitlin and Jason.
After the break, Janette and Brandon learn they're safe. Karla and Jonathan and Ashley and Kupono have to wait a few minutes. Ashley and Kupono are in the bottom three.
In a promo for Seaon 6, which is happening this fall, we see that Ryan Kasprzak (Evan's brother) made it through to Vegas in the L.A. round. Woot! He's great, so that's exciting.
Randi and Evan are safe, which leaves either Vitolio and Asuka or Kayla and Max as the last couple in the bottom three. Shockingly, Kayla and Max are in the bottom three.
Then it's solo time. I never really know how to describe these because they go so fast, but Kayla and Max really seem to be in another league. And usually, I feel bad for partner dancers when they have to do solos, but Max kills it.
The time-waster, uh, I mean performer while the judges deliberate is Kristinia DeBarge. She is so obviously lip-syncing that it's ridiculous. I don't know why they even bothered to put the little mike on the side of her face.
After that, Nigel says they weren't unanimous on either cut. He says Caitlin had good quality of movement and control and that she is safe. They liked Ashley's Hollywood glamour but not the lack of substance. He says that Kayla's solo was "crowded," too packed with things. So the woman being cut is Ashley.
Nigel says Jason's solo was the best on the series to date and he is safe. He says that Kupono's solo was lacking substance, too, but they like that he is unique and can take on characters. He says no one could impress as far as hard work as Max does. They cut Max. Really? I thought he was fantastic, both last night and in his solo. And I still think that Kupono really messed up last night, since why on earth would they have put a lackluster routine in the final spot?
I don't agree with this at all. I feel bad for Ashley, but her solo was simply not as good as the other two. I don't get why Kupono isn't going home. I don't have anything against him, I just feel like he didn't pull it off this week.
What do you think?

We were also amazed that Max was cut and Kupono was safe. It certainly wasn't a decision made purely on the quality of the dancing.
We liked Cat's red dress the other night, btw--you have to be six feet tall to carry off something like that.

I was surprised by Max's elimination also. He did a great solo and performed very well Wednesday. Kupono blew both performances. Kupono actually let his partner down on Wed. She did the better job with their routine (judges even said so), yet she was sent home. That makes no sense at all.
Judges did get it right with Jason. His solo was mesmerizing.

I just watched last night's show and I have to agree. I was wowed by Max's solo and thought there was no way he was going. Kupono has been a disappointment and now Kayla is stuck dancing w him. I agreed on Ashley being sent home. I love Caitlin so I was glad to see her stay. Also, I have no idea why they bothered to have Kristinia DeBarge show up. The lipsyncing was worse than some of the stuff they had on Solid Gold in the 80's.
SKK: I agree. They should have sent Kristinia home instead.

Max was a great dancer, but the fact that he truly IS a ballroom dancer always hovers over him. Kupono is not as consistent, but has the capability for moments of sheer brilliance. He may be the more versatile dancer, and his ability to enter into the character of the dance is imo a bit more developed than Max. Given that this show is not about the BEST dancer, but the favorite, Kupono has more potential, I think, which could explain the cut.
Overall, though, this is a killer cast, with just astonishing technical skills. Losing even one of them is difficult (and I agree, the group number was amazing. That and the crash test dummies are my faves so far.)

Oh, and while Cat could pull of the red big bird outfit, I do agree -- she looked like a dust ruffle on a stick in that. Just not flattering to anyone!

Mia's choreography is as crappy as her personality. I didn't feel she captured the spirit of the Stevie Wonder song at all. And, Mia's anti-woman bias was on full display. She couldn't choreograph for an all-male troupe, so she dressed up the women as men and put them in the background. Hated it. I wish Nigel would stop drinking the kool-aid and rid the show of the Mia-blight.
So sad to say goodbye to Ashley. The sweetest, most lovable crash test dummy ever, and she's gone in week 2. Boo.
Glad that Phillip and Jeanine were safe, though. Jeanine is one of my favorites; she's drop-dead gorgeous, a hard worker, and she had terrific leg action in that tango. A keeper!
Louis is 4 for 4! Four routines choreographed, four couples declared safe. Go ballroom!

Sharon, I like some of Mia's choreography, but she seemed incredibly bitchy during the auditions this year. What's going on there--anyone?
