'The Biggest Loser' names a winner

HelenWell, that was an unsatisfying conclusion.

I finally caught up on The Biggest Loser three-hour finale after watching American Idol, and I have to say: Bleh.

First, we learned that the last member of the final three, voted on by the viewing public, was Mike, who won out over his dad, Ron.

Then, the contestants who had been sent home weighed in, vying for a $100,000 prize. I would have guessed that Nicole might have taken it, based on her short stint back at the ranch. But the winner was 64-year-old Jerry, who lost more than half his weight.

Finally, it was down to Mike, Helen and Tara. If I were a betting woman, I would have put money on Tara or Mike. Tara won 12 challenges and set a record for the amount of weight lost by a woman on the Biggest Loser campus, and Mike set the record for the amount of weight lost by anyone on campus.

But then here came Helen (left), who was one of the lightest contestants to start with. But she managed to whittle herself down to 117 pounds, which frankly looked like it might have been a little bit too little. Mike and Tara were close, but not close enough.

I'm still irritated with Helen for forcing her daughter, Shanon, to go home. And she never mentioned her daughter again after that, did she? Yuck. I'm a sucker for a good makeover story, especially a life makeover like on The Biggest Loser, but not this one.

What do you think about the finale?

You took the words right out of my mouth. Tara or Mike deserved the win, not Helen who disowned her own daughter only to go on to become practically anorexic! Then as soon as the winner was announced they just ended the show... no comments no nothing.

Honestly, I think that Mike and Tara got much bigger rewards then Helen. Helen might have won the money, but Mike and Tara won their lives back. I would have loved to have seen Mike win, but his win will be musch longer lsting. Tara was just a great competitor and kicked butt all the way.

I am glad that Mike and his dad were able to make it through to the final four. It made the show much more interesting and allowed for us to see how true winners act. I honestly believe that if Mike and his dad can get Max to start slimming down, they will ahve won the ultimate prize.

SKK: Mike in IN, that's a good point.

Much like The Celebrity Apprentice, this could have easily been whittled down to 2 hours, and probably less than that, but with the lack of good shows the networks have left because they cancel everything, I guess there was nothing else to show anyway.

I agree with you about Helen and her daughter. You could see that Ron really wanted his son in the final 3, and wasn't so concerned with himself (however that could have been because he knew that with his health he probably didn't lose as much as Mike did).

Was it just me, or where there a larger number of contestants that didn't lose as much as they normally do? Could it have been because a good number of them got sent home for a month after only having been there for a week?

What a waste of air-time, that was 3 hours of programming that could have easily been done in 1 hour.

As far as the results it was suprising, but hopefully this means Tara found some balance in her "real world" life, as I suspect to win this way in you have to end up being an obsessive compulsive work out person, and during the season it seemed like that might be a danger for her.

I also liked that Dane and Blaine showed up with their medals from the marathon, half marathon and half ironman. Think they are trying to compensate for the whole marathon-gate thing? It would have been nice if they actually mentioned that on the finale, but it seems like BL is practicing Soviet style history and just ignoring anything that is unflattering to the show.

Good job to all the contestants on incredible transformations.

SKK: Did you notice they didn't even mention Laura's injury? That was odd to me, too.

Mike and Tara looked great! Both would have been deserving winners and all inspiring to young people who struggle with obesity.

Helen's win was not inspiring. She lost too much weight. It seems Helen and the at home winner, Jerry, basically starved themselves to nothing. Both looked unhealthy and vacuum-packed. I wouldn't be surprised if they each regained 20-30 lbs not long after the buzz of being on a reality TV show ends. After seeing the success of Tara and Mike, I wonder if Helen will ever regret not giving her daughter the same opportunity to makeover her life.

Nicole looked trim and fit, but most importantly she looked healthy. She would have been a deserving at home winner. She will look and feel fabulous in her wedding dress.

I agree with Chris’ comment, the overall weight loss of the at home contestants was underwhelming. It makes me wonder what kind of support, if any, the show provides to contestants when they're no longer on campus.

Finally, what was going on with Kristin’s hair? It was a hot mess!

SKK: I can't believe I forgot to mention Kristin's hair! I was in a daze after THREE HOURS, I guess. She looked great, otherwise, but her hair looked like she was trying to be Pink for Halloween.

I was rooting against Ron, who played the game the entire way. While his team couldn't win any challenges due to his being able to perform, they just kept on voting off their best players, like Dane.

Helen looked too skinny and combine that with her daughter who still needs to lose 50 lbs or so, and it is sad to see.

Man, that was really a shocker. Like everyone else, I was thinking Mike or Tara would win. They both truly deserved to based on how they played the game and their accomplishments. Tara was a monster winning all those challenges, and Mike seems like a genuinely good guy. Helen did look unhealthy, and Jerry...? (shudder)

I was shocked when she came out. She was wayy too skinny and it didn't look good on her. I thought she looked amazing on the last weigh in on the ranch. I guess she did what she needed to to win though.
I still wish Tara had won! She was so driven and look so gorgeous at the finale!!

I also miss the way they did it a few seasons ago when it wasn't just percentage of weight loss, but it also counted body fat. That would be a much better way of deciding the winner.
