Why I don't think Kara DioGuardi is adding much to 'American Idol'
I was doing a little Wednesday-afternoon quarterbacking, thinking about last night's American Idol, well, the past few weeks actually, specifically about new judge Kara DioGuardi and whether she is adding anything to the show.
And really, I think the answer is no.
Since the live shows started three weeks ago, Kara's been positioning herself as "the industry type." She's always giving feedback about whether someone sounds or looks "commercial" or whether she can figure out what kind of records people would make or whether she can imagine hearing them on the radio.
You can't blame her for trying to differentiate herself among a panel of judges who have developed extremely rigid roles for themselves in the preceeding seven seasons. But the constant talk about a contestant's ability to be marketed kind of takes away from the escapism of American Idol. It's not like we don't all know that it is, at its core, about dollars -- lots of them. But it's much easier to believe that maybe the show is really about making a singer's dream come true when you don't have someone referencing again and again a contestant's salability.
Say what you will about Paula Abdul, who is goofy and frou frou and often nonsensical, but at least she's all about the joy of performance and the joy of music, even if she can't always articulate it.
Plus, four judges really, really makes the show go on too long.

Comments
I don't dislike Kara, but I can usually predict what she is going to say! At least the other judges occasionally surprise me.
SKK: I don't dislike her, but I think she's been fairly superfluous all season, and it's only gotten worse on the live shows.

You're so right, Sarah. Listening to Kara makes me realize how much I like Paula. I thought at first that Kara would be like the female Simon, but apparently, no one has an ego that big!

I don't think Kara really adds anything. Simon and Randy seemed to always have the "commerical" opinion covered.
As to Paula, I think she's like a little puppy that pees on the carpet. Yeah, we complain about it, but we still love the puppy.

OMG! This is the most perfect statement. I like the escapism of AI, and I was not sure why I felt so unconfortable when Kara talks about 'commerical' and 'marketable'. I love the nonsense of Paula, balanced out by the realism of Simon.I want it to be about the performers dream not just another golden nutt in the wheel.
Please send your story to AI producers.

You're absolutely right. I think they made a mistake adding a 4th. She doesn't add anything relevant and the show is running over every time.

There have been rumours that this is Paula's last season on the show, and that they brought Kara in now to ease the transition. I like Kara, and although I agree she's stumbled a bit and had to find her way, I think she'll be fine.
Really, what makes the show too long is the long, drawn-out, fake attempts at building suspense in the eliminations and such. An hour-long elimination show is too much - it should be half an hour.
SKK: We've talked about those rumors in other posts, but there's of course no confirmation about any of it. I totally agree that the results shows are too drawn-out -- I've been saying they should be a half-hour for years. (Didn't they used to be?) But comments by four judges per contestant is drawing out the performance shows, too, and they're repeating one another and running out of things to say, but still talking for ages. And the singers who perform toward the end get short-changed because they get like two words of feedback. And even still, the show runs late. I hope they get it together pretty soon.

My god, look at that picture of her. Her left hand. Can you bend your fingers back that far? I can't. Freaky.

Three judges were enough, waiting for 4-judges to state their opinions about a singer takes up way more time than it should. I thought Kara was pretty much on target during the auditions but since then, it seems like she's afraid to say anything that will draw "boo's" from the audience. I have a hard time listening to Paula when she's really stretching to say something nice and starts commenting on clothes and hair but now Kara has turned into a "fluff" piece too. I almost lost it with her trying to figure out what kind of person a contestant is and she made a comment about how it would be to go shopping with her. What happened to commenting on the actual singing?

You really isolated exactly what the problem with Cara is. She constantly talks like she is a record exec in a back room talking about marketability- if they have the right "look", and "sound on radio". She is more arrogant than Simon. If Cara were there in past seasons, then Mandisa, Melinda, Elliot, Bo, and many others with great voices would never have had a shot. This is the first season that "looks" plays such a blatant role, with Cara constantly talking about "the right looks in this industry" and getting Simon to agree with her (Simon, please stop agreeing with Cara about looks and not talent!). Part of Idol's charm is that it used to make you feel as though anyone with a good voice could win, that it had heart. Cara took the heart right out of it.

I find Kara totally annoying and impressed with her own feedback. I TiVo past her comments always. Irritating

I totally agree with you. I don't like the whole concept of having 4 judges. It is too much (although I did like having the occasional guest judge). Cara seems too rigid and the interaction between her and the other judges seems forced. And if I hear the comment that the poor kid doesn't know what kind of artist he/she is again, I'll scream!!!! ♥

I don't agree with any of you. Do you guys know how many songs Kara has written or for who she has written songs for..Youtube her and you will realize that she is probably the most talented one musically then the other judges. She looks at what the industry would like as well as what is going to make the most money. How many good artist do you know of, (who are currently popular), tell me which one of them is ugly??

I agree with you Jennifer! I LOVE Kara knows a lot about music and has the most experience of those judges. I think she is amazing and I already loved her before the AI, when she was in a Platinum Weird. She is also an amazing song-writer! You can't blame her for being used to 3-judges, I love NEW STUFF and did bring something fresh to the show! JUST ENJOY IT!

I really like Kara. She's been a great addition to the other 3 who have become stale and "predictable" in my view. Kara adds intelligence and normalcy to the 3, unlike Randy who is so out there with his wacky jargon; and Paula, who can be nonsensical, inarticulate and mushy, not to mention her licentious clothing; and Simon who is often too brutally honest. Kara is intelligible in her delivery and shrewd in her opinions as well as easy to look at. She is similar to Simon but with finesse and a little more humility. And ... I love that thing she does with her head.

Kara DioGuardio in my humble opinion is the best judge... not to mention she's smokin' fine.

I can't stand her. She is so obnoxious and acts like she's the most successful of all the judges. Excuse me,Paula has had platinum albums,Randy and Simon have both worked with Mariah Carey and other top acts so I don't know where she gets off. If not for Paula I will not watch the show in the future and I think some fans of the show will see Kara replacing her as tacky and a betrayal to viewers.
