'American Idol': Second cut made to Top 36

Which three contestants from last night's semifinalists will make it to the Top 12 on American Idol? Only time will tell, but I would be surprised if Allison Iraheta and Adam Lambert don't make it. I didn't love Adam, but I know a lot of people did.

Host Ryan Seacrest tell us 25 million votes were cast last night -- then we get a recap of how the contestants got there in the first place. Tonight's group sing is of Ne-Yo's "Closer." Of note: Nick Mitchell looks wildly uncomfortable performing as himself and not Norman Gentle, Jeanine Vailes is wearing eensy jean shorts again, and Jesse mugs for the camera like crazy after the performance.

After the break, it's a recap of last night's show. Been there, blogged that.

Allison Iraheta is called forward first. Hmm. No, fakeout: Then he calls Jesse Langseth forward, then Matt Breitzke. Ryan asks the judges which of these three is going through. Randy says he hopes Allison. Indeed, it is her. She sings "Alone" again and is awesome again. Are we really sure she's only 16? ...

Next, Megan Corkrey and Kris Allen are up, followed by Matt Giraud and Jeanine Vailes. One of them, Ryan says, is in the Top 12. He asks Paula whom she thinks it is. She names everyone but Jeanine. Immediately, Ryan tells Jeanine it's not her, then Matt gets the news it's not him. Kara talks about how awesome Kris was in Hollywood, but it's yet another great performance we didn't get to see, so that stinks for Kris. Kara tells Megan she is "very unique" (bleh), and she and Simon spar about whether she's talking too much. Apparently she is because Ryan butts in to share that Kris Allen is going through to the Top 12.

Apparently they have so much extra time that they reair an Idol retrospective that we've already seen recently. So yes, this show could be a half-hour! Then, a finalist from last  year, Brooke White, comes out to perform her first single. She tells the other contestants to never Google their names. Oh, I disagree. Come read!

After that, Mishavonna Henson, Kai Kalama, Nick Mitchell, Jasmine Murray and Adam Lambert are called forward. Mishavonna, Kai and Jasmine are out. So that leaves Nick and Adam. After the break, Adam is told he is in the Top 12.

So that means: Adam Lambert, Kris Allen and Allison Iraheta in the Top 12. Allison and Adam were pretty much shoo-ins, but I'm pretty shocked about Kris. I guess other people got over the song choice better than I thought.

What think you?

Wow - I think I just won the bet I made with my husband. I totally called on all three! Adam was a great performer, his stage presence was very strong even if his voice was just so-so. Allison was in a league of her own. Kris was not fantastic, but he's so adorable I think people couldn't help but vote for him... ;)

I'm really struggling with the format this season. It seems like a very convoluted system when we don't get to see half of the contestants before they perform live, and then we get a minute and a half to judge whether or not they are good enough to be in the top 12. The previous version allowed us to listen to those people a few times before they were booted for not being good enough. Change can be good, but change just for the sake of changing isn't necessarily the best route.

Damn. Our electricity went off for an hour and I missed all 15 mninutes of the Idol results.

Adam and Allison: predictable and understandable.

Kris: a surprise (and I would have voted for Matt G if I knew how to do text messages) but I think it's ok. He seems pretty talented, doesn't he?

SKK: He does seem pretty talented. I just hope never to hear him take on MJ again.

I was pleasantly surprised about Kris. He was my favorite guy Wednesday night, and I like that he got through, despite his limited screen time thus far. I really like Allison, DESPISE Adam Lambert and his ridiculous Pete Wentzishness. I also really liked Jesse and would have liked to see her get through. There's always wildcard.

Speaking of wildcard, because the third person to get in has been a guy each week, most of the WC peeps are going to have to be girls, to balance out the genders. That leaves less chance for my beloved Anoop. Yikes.

Great job on the blog, Sarah! :)

SKK: Thanks, Erika! I was wondering whether they will act like they have to have an even number of men and women, or if maybe we'll just start out at 12 with whoever's best/been voted in, regardless of sex? Probably not, though.

As far as changing the format, they're actually changing it BACK. This is how they did it in the first two (maybe three?) seasons.

Sarah, glad you are back here. Kris reminds me of our Conway AR ties. Your great grand parents attended University there, and your grand parents (guess who) spent their wedding night there, so Kris has to win--regardless of ability to sing! Grandma Peggy

I LOVE Adam. I don't care if he loses, as long as he's on the tour. The winner gets tied to a riduculous stringent contract so I'd rather not have Adam being 19 Entertainment's puppet. Get out early, start recording your CD, go on the AI tour and promote your CD!

I have to agree with Erika about Adam. To me, he's a gimmicky poser with little substance, like Blake the beat boxer from a season or two ago.

Very pleased with the other 2 choices. I too, wish we got more opportunity to see them perform. Seems unfair to eliminate so many based on one performance each.

Check out this website! You can rate the judges in a bunch of different categories and say how much you like a contestant’s performance second by second through their performance! It’s awesome…
