'American Idol': Top 12 are revealed

Four more will go home this evening on American Idol, leaving us with the 12 finalists.

But first up, last year's runner-up Blake Lewis comes out to perform his new single live. Ryan Seacrest asks him for his advice, and he tells the contestants to be true to themselves and listen to the good comments from the judges. OK, then.

Before he starts revealing the Top 12, Ryan says more than 36 million votes were cast on Tuesday and Wednesday nights. Ryan also congratulates Paula Abdul for having the No. 1 downloaded video on iTunes. OK, then. Let's get to the results.

First, a montage of the guys' performances from Tuesday (with Randy's references to INXS when Michael Johns was singing a Simple Minds song carefully excised). David Cook is first up, and Ryan tells him 1) that Lionel Richie loved his version of the song, and 2) that he is in the Top 12. David Archuleta is also in. Shall we make it a David trifecta? Not yet. Jason Castro is also through to the finals.

Time to switch it up and make the women nervous. First, montage from Wednesday. Brooke White is in the Top 12. Syesha Mercado is next -- Ryan asks the judges if they think she is through, and they all say yes.  They are right. Kady Malloy finds out that she is out. That's not a big surprise. Her exit footage pretty much proves Simon right -- she is funny and engaging on film, but boring live. She reprises "Who Wants to Live Forever," and it's about as off as last night.

After the break Ryan says that during next week's results show, viewers can call in live to ask questions. Huh. That should go well.

David Hernandez is through, so there's our trifecta. Michael Johns stands up next, and he's through to the Top 12, too. Luke Menard, on the other hand, is out. Being and Orlando Bloom lookalike isn't carrying him any further. He unfortunately has to sing "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go" again. Danny Noriega and Chikezie look miserable while they continue to wait.

Ramiele Malubay discovers she is safe after Ryan strings her along a little. Carly Smithson? Also in the Top 12. And she also totally ignores Chikezie who is trying to give her a high five as she goes by. Amanda Overmyer is also in the Top 12 (wha?), leaving Asia'h Epperson and Kristy Lee Cook to keep on waiting.

After the break, Asia'h Epperson is out, and Kristy Lee Cook is safe. Aww, shucks, I like Asia'h. In her footage, they replay her singing "How Do I Live" at her audition two days after her father's sudden passing, and seriously, she has to sing after watching that again? That is mean and not very fair. She decides to go for it, and actually, I think she did a better job with it through the tears than she did last night. Paula shouts out: "That was the best vocal you ever did."

Back to the guys. Danny is already crying because his friends are getting sent home. Chikezie is in the Top 12, Danny Noriega is out, and Ramiele is losing it (again).

So, to recap (the recap), Kady Malloy, Asia'h Epperson, Luke Menard and Danny Noriega have been cut, and now it's time for the finals. I'm surprised to see Asia'h out, but otherwise not too shocked. How about you?

Thanks for posting the results so quickly. You save me, here in L.A., the trouble of watching the show when it airs here (tape-delayed) 90 minutes from now. Results shows are a waste of time, what with the performances by the WORST singers and Ryan's stretching out the spoken delivery of 4 names to a whole hour.

Glad to help!

I was MORTIFIED when they kicked Danny out. True, he sang terribly last night; he chose the wrong song for his voice. Although I liked his spunk.

Plus, my dislike of Chikezie has grown into severe hate for winning against my favorite. I hope Chikezie doesn't become this year's Reuben Studdard, winning against someone better and then going nowhere with the win.

BULL! I loved Asia'h. I'm so sad that she's gone, and I really can't believe it... wow.

I would say that I'm not going to watch anymore, but that's a lie.

Seriously though, Asia'h and Danny =

I can't believe they're gone. Boo.

What is going on those kids?
Why was Ramiele crying like someone just shot her in the big toe, when they kicked that little fruitcake known as Noriega off the show
And did I really see Chikezie holding Noriega's hand as they walked together towards Seacrest to recieve their fate?
what was that about?
The emotion needs to be toned down a touch, just like Paula's medication

I was surprised to see Asia'h cut, I just knew between her and Krisy Lee Cook, it would have been Kristy... other like you, I'm quite satisfied with the Top 12.

I thought the right people left, although I could've gone either way on Asia'h or Kristy Lee. It doesn't appear that there's a Sanjaya in the bunch this year. Danny Noriega had that potential, but he's gone.

Sarah, did you forget Blake Lewis's name? He was last year's runner up. I fast forwarded my DVR when he started the beat boxing. Made me remember why I didn't like him last year. Interesting talent, but not for me.

Whoops, could've sworn I typed that. It's been a looooong week, reality-TV-wise. Thanks for the heads up. I added to the entry.

Great recap! Sometimes I'm happy that I live three hours behind Eastern time so I know if a show is worth my time to watch. Your excellent summary will more than suffice for Seacrest dragging out a 10 second announcement into ½ hr. Cheers!

(Asides: 1) I like Amanda. 2) I am baffled Chikezie hasn't been eliminated yet. He's not even a teenie bopper like Sanjaya, Kevin Covais, and John Stevens.

I wasn't surprised about Kady and Luke. It was only a matter of time with those two. Danny... I didn't think he would win, but I thought he might get further. Asia'h Epperson??? What?!!! I can't believe that Kristy Lee "Crook" stole the last spot away from Asia'h. Shame on us America for not voting appropriately. Probably the most talented girl is out of the competition. If it weren't for David Archuleta I would probably stop watching the competition after that. Well, okay, maybe not.

i fricken h8 this! Danny was the best out there!! he took blakes advice every week! i mean he was sooooooooooooo true to himself it wasnt even funny! and he would totes take the good and the bad advice and just work with and learn from it!! his elimination is still TMTH and now tht my idol is out, im not watching it anymore ths season and i don't care who wins cuz they all suck!!!!!!!

Why Danny?
just because he is gay?

I was shocked to see Danny go!! I thought for sure stipper guy was going home!! Plus I thought Amanda was out I never in a million thought it would be Asia'h but Kady not sure how she ever made it that far!!!

I'm sad. Aisa'h was my favorite. :(
But the others werent that great. I want Amanda and Chikeezie to go home. Amanda scares me.

I CANT BELIEVE ASIA'H IS OUT.
she was amazing.
and she had tons of charisma.

I am an Idol fan and a nurse who works 12 hr shifts. Often I am leaving work at ~8PM. On the way home from work last thursday, I was thinking how nice it would be if I could turn on the radio and tune in the results show. Better yet, how about simulcasting the competitions on the radio. Let me know what you think!!!
thanks for your time,
Susan L. Smith

when does Ramiele not cry? Seriously.

i am completely shocked when i knew that asia'h is not in top 12!!! i still am shocked until now... she's like the best of all! amanda shudof gone... oh well...

No problem, Sarah! I seriously don't know how you keep up with all the reality programming that's on TV these days. It's impressive!

I'm surprised at the reaction to Danny's elimination on this blog. Danny was definitely true to himself, and he has a great voice, but is America seriously ready for that flamboyent a pop star? Apparently not. Remember, the competition is ostensibly about finding someone who's going to sell albums and concert tickets (not that it's always worked out that way). Who's going to see him in concert? I imagine he'd have a pretty niche following. He could turn this exposure into a career, but I don't see it.

I am sooo glad Chikezie is in the top 12! He has a great voice!

The only shocker is Asia'h.

This has gotta be a joke !!!!

Danny Noriega gone??? Are the voters crazy or what???

and Asia'h !!!!!!!

For God's sake.... stop this show... Just when you think, you've seen the worst of reality rigging on American Idol each season, they give you the sucker punch !!!

I wud have said am not watching anymore but for Syesha and David Archuleta.

But knowing AI and how it eventually uncovers each year, I wont be surprised to see Chekezie and Amanda in the finals !!!

Nice recap - I think you nailed it - not so surprising, really... but Asia'h's exit was a disappointment--I thought OM would have went instead...

Ramiele was crying because she and Danny became really close and she was upset that he was leaving. Danny deserved to win he should have stayed on atleast to top 10.

All you Noriega lovers who were drinking the Kool - Aid before last night finally met your Jonestown. Good riddance to that clown. More estrogen than the Victoria's Secret Fashion show.

Asia'h was a shocker. I think she was hurt by Simon's comment that she couldn't hit the big notes at the end, while in reality she was hitting those notes.

I'm glad Danny went home i didn't think he could sing but i think Chikeze should have went instead of Luke Menard he was better also i don't think A'siah should have went home i think Amanda should have the Amanda Danny and Chikeze shouldn't have even made it to the top 24 in my opinion however my top vote goes to David Archuleta

Danny is a great singer and made the show way more interesting than it deserved to be. It's funny how some people think he was somehow the next Sanjaya just because he was "pretty." I think the reason why Danny didn't get enough votes is so incredibly obvious, yet people don't want to acknowledge it. That's America for ya.

Let's not forget that Danny was also pretty obnoxious. I can't stand it when the contestants talk back to the judges, and Danny did that every week. Eventually, that gets you in trouble, and Danny's ouster is proof of that.

This year's lineup, including the ones voted off recently, are all good vocalists. The problem is they are not all good performers. Danny Noriega fans, sorry, but rewatch the way he sells a song - he has no conviction, he has no new or interesting or exciting moves, he does not engage himself, so how can he expect to engage his whole audience? Archuleta had all along but seems to have fallen off, hopefully he'll get his fire back. Sad to see Asia'h go because she had presence & charisma. Amanda and the Australian do the same thing every week. The stripper guy and the Barbie girl move like every amateur through history before them, and they clearly don't believe what they are singing.
