'Survivor: China': and the winner is ...

Clearly, the producers of Survivor are done with those final-four immunity challenges that last 20 hours. On tonight's episode, the survivors had to pile dishes onto a platform and hold it steady with a handle.

It came down to Denise and Amanda, but Amanda took it. Denise desperately wrangled with her to get rid of someone else (and the editing sure made it seem like Amanda promised not to write down Denise's name), but in the end, Denise was out, leaving Amanda, Todd and Courtney as the final three.

At that tribal council, Denise said Amanda had said she had Denise's back, and Amanda tried to clarify that she had said it earlier, not that day (so not sure what gives with the whole "won't write your name down" thing). Todd pulled a face, Jeff asked him about it, and he said he was just reacting to the harshness. Back at camp, Amanda worked what became her favorite face of the evening -- pouty -- and yelled at Todd for selling her out. He said he didn't mean to, and while he and Courtney tried to celebrate, Amanda went to sleep.

The next day, there was the ritual "say something about the ousted players, even if you didn't know them" thing, this time with firecrackers instead of straight-up fire.

Then ... final tribal council.

There were some funny moments (James asking for a positive memory and reiterating that he is not "a bitter Betty"; Todd playing Jean-Robert's ego by saying that the reason he broke his word with him was because J-R was the better player; Peih-Gee saying she was tired of Amanda's doe-eyed apology face) and some strange ones (Jaime being the harshest in her questioning). No "rat and snake" speeches a la Sue Hawk in the original Survivor, though.

When the votes were cast, they showed one each for Todd, Amanda and Courtney. After a quick flip to live, host Jeff Probst read the votes, and Todd was named the winner.

In the reunion show, it was the usual focus on a few and then give two seconds of screen time to the people who hadn't been talked to yet. But of note:

  • Todd says he had a plan from the beginning to align with someone on day 1 and to make friends with the strongest player as soon as possible. Quickly, he said he realized he needed to pull in someone smaller than him so that if a group challenge was lost, he wasn't blamed as the weakest link. Good thinking, actually.
  • Denise returned to work to find that she was no longer allowed to return to her job because her boss thought her celebrity would be too much of a distraction, so now she is a janitor on night shift. (Shortly thereafter, producer Mark Burnett had Jeff announce that he was giving her $50,000 to get things together.)
  • James is popular with everyone -- even at funerals when he is doing his job as grave-digger. Also, he won the people's choice $100,000 prize.
  • Jeff asked Courtney about a comment she had made about Denise during the last episode ("It's not welfare," she said to Todd. "It's not our fault she sucks at life." She then immediately called herself "the world's biggest b---h.") Courtney first appeared to flip Jeff off and then said yes, she regrets it, that sometimes she talks without thinking, and that she had already apologized to Denise.
  • He also asked Courtney about her weight -- she went from 93 pounds to 86 over the course of the show. He asked her if she had an eating disorder, and she said no, and this doesn't even faze her anymore because she's been asked about it her whole life. She said her whole family is thin and lanky.
  • Oh, and Jaime and Erik are dating now, and Erik is still a virgin.
  • But my favorite part was Todd detailing exactly how he played to Jean-Robert's ego with his answer at tribal council, and J-R admitting that is why he voted for him. Hee!
  • And next season? Favorites from past seasons vs. Superfans ... in Micronesia. Well, now. That could be interesting.

What did you think about the finale and the reunion? High points? Low points?

I think Todd played the hardest from the first day, so his win is a satisfying end to the season. At least for me.

I think this was a pretty decent season. Todd definitely played a great game and I think so did Amanda. I had thought it was going to be her who won, up until tribal council in which she flustered and really didn't sound convincing and Todd did everything he needed to do to win. In the end, he proved that he could play the game a lot harder than Amanda could and was better able to put friendships aside in the context of the game. Its tough though because I do think Amanda was a key part of his success, for example correcting his decisions early on.

amanda so deserved to win and i was so surprised that she didn't win. she was such a cool, calculating player and really was the mastermind behind everything. todd sort of jumped around from position to position and is just such a liar with no honor. i hope amanda will get her chance on the next show, but to gain viewers i'm sure producers will pick james or denise. they got something -- amanda played great and got nada. give her another chance!!

I was so sick of Denise whining about being the underdog and "only" a lunch lady..... boo hoo. You don't get to be CEO of a company without education and working hard. With the attitude that Denise had, "poor me, oh poor me" it's no wonder that she was always the last one picked. Who'd want a whiner like her? Congrats to Todd. He played the game perfectly.

Isn't it amazing in America that you get rewarded for being a liar, cheat and a thief. Was that really the object of the show when it started or have standards dropped so low that the person that SURVIVES the best is systematically kicked out each week. Having watch survivor since the first show I guess its getting old seeing bad behaviour being rewarded.

If Amanda owned up to being deceitful instead of trying to justify her actions, that would have scored her major points with the jury. I think a couple of the jurors voted for Todd because Amanda failed to deliver in the final TC. Amanda would have been a deserving winner if only she owned up to playing the game to win.

I was really pulling for Denise. So glad she received the $50,000. James was also a favorite of mine.

Much happier that Todd won -- Amanda deserved to loose.

Good luck to all.

I was personally thrilled that my boy won this year. I had figured on Amanda winning, as I had planned on the entire jury abhorrence toward Todd’s strategic strategy to give him very few votes if any. My subsequent hope was for Denise to struggle through the last challenge, but when she got voted out I thought for sure all chances of my favorites to win had been crushed. Mercifully, I was wrong, and I admit I nearly had a seizure I was so pleased at the end. Equally exciting, next season they’ll be bringing back favorites from past seasons. I swear I’ll cry if they bring back Ozzy. He was unsurpassed by any of the others in challenges and he played the overall game well too. I think he got ripped off during his own time in the game. But anyway, I just wanted to express some of the joy I’m feeling about the winner of Survivor: China, and wishing all the best to the other competitors, from Chicken, the crazy old git who stayed for less than a week, to Courtney, the slightly annoying but ever-entertaining shrimp who somehow managed to make it all the way to the final three.

What would happen if there was a tie between Todd & Courtney

Isn't it amazing in America that you get rewarded for being a liar, cheat and a thief. Sounds like politics

Well, I have to say that I wanted Denise to win. I had made up my mind the week before that if Denise wasn't on the final 3 then I had no desire to watch the finale. Therefore, I never watched the finale. Am glad to hear that she got 50,000 though. She deserved so much more.

This show should have never happened and the comment about Denise being a food service person-was uncalled for. There is only one person who is to judge us and I do believe most will understand who I am talking about. The man above. GOD
So it gives no right for the slander remarks.

My wife and I were very disappointed with the caliber and quality of this seasons contestants. The cheating and lying are becoming very disheartening! Lets get back to some decent, fair contestants. The show has really drifted away from the interesting first several seasons!

I think Courtney or Amanda should of won. Todd was getting old with all his lies and decitfulness. When finally it got down to one vote for all I felt like it should of been Todd that was going to lose and then Courtney and Amanda left. I got very dissapointed and a little angry when the comment about Denise was said about being a food sevice person but when I heard she won 50,000 I felt Better. All in all I don't belive Todd should of won Survivor China in the end.

I'm so glad that Denise lost when she did. She moaned and complained about being the outsider and the last one picked, then she screws over Peih-Gee three times: in the two rewards she won and in the voting to go to the final four. Did she really think she could win against the three youngsters when they are closer to each other than to her? If she saved Peih-Gee, she'd have an ally if she lost an immunity challenge and a guaranteed spot in the final three. Karma can really stick it to ya- I hope the night shift treats her well for her efforts.

Amanda really blew it when she chose to include Todd in the final three instead of Denise. If she was a student of the game "Survivor" like Todd was, she would know no way would the jury vote for either Denise or Courtney. Denise and Courtney had no clue, no strategy, no guts! Amanda didn't know what Todd knew: usually members of the jury rarely are hypocrital enough to hold a grudge against a finalist who blindsided them when that juror would have done the same thing to stay in the game if they were given another chance. Rarely does the jury give the money to a player just because they are a nice guy, unless the player showed that jury member that they were physically or mentally superior and are worthy of admiration. How could a jury member admit they got beat by an airhead or a whiner. I bet Todd conviced Amanda that the jury would vote for Denise because they felt sorry for her and liked her, and not vote for himself because they all hated him. Even Denise was convinced of this.(how deluded can you get) I'm sure they are all pissed at him, but they had the integrity to admit they got beat by him. I'm not certain about the 2 votes Courtney got, but it does show my point that pity is not going to win any points with a jury. Amanda dropped the ball on the 1-yard line. Peigh-gee was right about the "doe-eyed" look on Amanda: she wussed out! Amanda wanted to be liked by everyone while they handed her a million dollars. Todd slid into the million dollars because he knew what he was doing and Amanda gave it to him because she lost her focus when it really counted. To paraphrase Courtney: this ain't Charity!

Nobody ever wins a million dollars because they worked the hardest. James, Peih-gee, and Denise were the most reliable.I was very happy that James and Denise "got paid" but what about Peih-gee?You need to let Peih-gee come back in 2008 & try again!

Thank God I missed the finale. I would have thrown up to watch Todd win it.
Snake in the grass, lying, cheating people like him deserve nothing in life.
He'd screw over his own Grandmother.

James, oh man! You should have played the idel sweetie!!! I think James should have won the $$$. I'm glad to know he won $100,000. That's cool. Hope to see him back on the next survivor. He deserves another chance!!! As for Denise,,,boo hoo...You live life how you soe it! I wish I could give national TV or just some blow joe on the street my sob story and someone would give me $50,000.........Poor loser!!! Hope to see some of the great past survirors on the next episode, like RUPERT!!! Hope to see him on there!

I agree with most people, Todd should not have won Survivor China, Amanda blew it, she could not defend herself, and amazingly the jury voted for Todd!
