CANFEST: Canned Beer Competition
Word comes from Reno, Nev., of a canned beer competition, supposedly the world's first, on Oct. 23 at Reno's Grand Sierra Theater. It is called CANFEST.
So far, Buckbean Brewing Co., Big Sky Brewing Co., Oskar Blues, Ukiah Brewing Co., Maui Brewing Co., Surly Brewing Co., New Belgium Brewing Co., Uncommon Brewers and Rochester Mills Brewing Co. have confirmed they will be there, according to a press release sent by Buckbean Brewing, the sponsor of the event.
Seminars dispelling the "myths" surrounding canned beers, such as canning spoils the taste, are planned. For more information on CANFEST, contact Constance Aguilar from Abbi Public Relations at constance@abbipr.com.
I am familiar with the Oskar Blues canned beers; they are very good, especially if you pour them in a glass.
Anyone tasted any of these other canned brews?
A new brewery in Georgetown, Del., 16 Mile, is putting their Amber Sun Ale in 22-ounce aluminum vessels.
I guess this means that just like the old days of steel cans, you are going to have be a real man, or woman, to crush these containers.
Are you pro- or anti-can? Why?

Im Pro Can but Ive also worked on packaging lines in a breweries and had glass flying at me when a piece of equipment messes up ;)
But seriously cans are a better package than a bottle because they don't let light in and theres less dissolved oxygen in cans than bottles because the way cans are filled .
Cans are also cheaper to ship for brewers and have a better recycling rate then glass .
Canning equipment is also cheaper for microbrewers because you don't need a ,labeler (CANS COME PRE PRINTED ) or six pack packer .
Cask Systems is offering a very affordable Semi Automatic canning systems for about $10,000 a small bottling line will cost you way more than that .

I'll second the Oskar Blues -- Old Chubb is the best thing in a can!

Surly's stuff is phenomenal. Their Furious is a big, bitter, balanced IPA, Darkness a monstrous imperial stout, CynicAle a delicate Belgian-style brew, Bitter Brewer an easy-sipping bitter.
I love to have at least a sixer or so of canned craft brews in the beer fridge. They keep practically forever and they're portable--just gotta remember to bring cups!

I realize you didn't say it did(EG from BD), but Darkness only comes in glass bombers. I'm assuming any beers in the competition have to be poured out of a can. That said, Furious is stellar. Cynic is a nice saison and if they put Hell in cans it could be a big winner. Their best is 16 Grit, but I've only seen that on tap.
