Touring Dogfish Head Brewery

Sam CalagioneI just got a tour of the Dogfish Head brewery in Milton, Del.

I will be writing in detail about it and other beery spots at the beach in an coming piece for The Sun's travel section.

I recommend the tour. It is free, and there are samples, but you must sign up for in on the brewery Web site.

Sam Calagione (at left), the exuberant president of Dogfish, gave me the tour. He remains a font of energy and ideas about brewing and about enjoying life.

He pilots a tour boat on Saturday nights out of Lewes. On Mondays, he takes guitar lessons with his 10-year-old son, Sammy. Sammy plays acoustic, his dad plays bass.

I'm 50/50 on scheduling this during my OC trip in 2 weeks. Only thing holding me back.... the wife and 1 year-old kid!

Having toured DFH 2 times, once with Sam leading and the second with a very nice lady, I can say Sam makes the tour much better. Something about a passion vs. a job I guess. And the pitcher of 60 minute was never empty during the whole 1.5 hour tour with Sam. Now you get 4 little cardboard sharks you trade for small pours.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if a Dogfish Head Ale House came to the Baltimore region? The empty Hops location in Owings Mills would be perfect. Why? Because I could walk there.

That's funny - I toured the brewery this weekend as well (we didn't have Sam though). They've added a number of beers since my last time there, and it was a good entertaining break from the beach (and as your previous post pointed out, there's not much for beer lovers in Ocean City). I really liked the Palo Santo ale.

And yes, an ale house would be great in Baltimore. I think it would do well.
