A nice IPA from Virginia

While sipping brews and watching college basketball over the weekend, I experienced a couple of surprises. On the basketball front, Michigan State's victories over my Kansas Jayhawks and Louisville Cardinals were impressive.

At last there will be something that the folks in Detroit, site of next weekend's championship round, can be happy about.

I was also pleasantly surprised by a bottle of Northern Lights India Pale Ale brewed by Virginia's Starr Hill brewery that I sampled.  Nice bittering hops, a little pepper and citrus flavors as well.

These guys are new to me. Their Web site  says they started in Charlottesville and now brew in  Crozet, Va., a suburb.

Anyone else had this brew?

Anyone tried the rest of the brewery's line?

I am predicting a Michigan State - Nova final. What is your prediction?

Starr Hill has been around for while. They started as a small brewpub, and only recently have expanded production and distribution. Their Jomo Lager just showed up in my liquor store this past week, and it's fantastic. Previously, every time my wife and I visited family in Virginia we had to stock up. I am also a big fan of their Amber Ale.

Rob, have you had Legend IPA from the Richmond brewery? It's delicious.
(mary, have not had it , will seek it , where did you find it.? Rob )

Did a little side-by-side of Northern Lights with the new Sierra Nevada Torpedo for no reason at all. Turns out, they're somewhat similar, but I have to say the Northern Lights didn't impress me all that much.

However, Starr Hill's The Love hefeweizen, which is available in draft and package all year-round as of yesterday, is a treat. If you happen to see it anywhere, grab a pint or a sixer and enjoy. And keep drinking Virginia beer!

By the way - UNC over Michigan State in the final. Not partial to either team, just statin' the facts...
