How to smell as fresh as a beer.

Tom's of Maine, that eco-friendly outfit that makes tasty toothpaste, has deodorants that use hops to fight odor-causing bacteria.

According to the Tom's public relations people , the type of hops they use is hallertauer magnun. They are in their Long Lasting and Senstive Care brands of deodorants.

They offered this explanation of how hops could keep us smelling good.

"Unpleasant odor is caused by skin bacteria when we sweat. The “bitter principles” that help hops to preserve beer also, it turns out, fight odor. Hops inhibits the growth of bacteria by causing leakage in the bacterial cell membrane, which impairs bacterial function and therefore prevents odor."

Anybody try these?

Do you end up smelling like a bar or a beer?

Neither. It doesn't work.

I've never tried this, and I would discourage anyone to do so. Using hops for non-beer purposes will just drive up the price of hops, and therefore, of beer. And who wants that?

I am a long-time user of Tom's of Maine deodorant. I tried this new version with hops. It may or may not have made me smell better. I don't know, I was too busy furiously scratching the bright red rashes in my armpits. Allergic reaction or new "feature" of the product? I don't know. I got rid of the stuff post haste. Great Googly Moogly that was a miserable couple of days.

I used to be a fan of their "woodspice" scent; in fact, it's still my favorite deodorant scent in-and-of-itself, masculine but mild. The problem with Tom's natural deodorant (and many others) is that it doesn't last. In the summer, Tom's would provide maybe one or two hours of effect under light activity. This was enough to move me to a mainstream brand.

In short, I never smelled like beer, but hops don't seem to do much else either. Come to think of it, I would like to try an "alehouse" scent.

I use Tom's of Maine roll-on because I've found it works much better than their solids. It also doesn't contain hops, which I'd prefer to drink. Did you also know that hops are closely related to cannabis, my favorite vice?
