Off to Oregon to raft and sip

I am off to Portland, Ore. this week for a few days vacation. I'll be rafting down the Deschutes River, then I might drink a few Deschutes brews as well.

Anybody got any favorite Oregon beers or watering holes?

My favorite brewery from Oregon would be Rogue, but I have heard much about the Hair of the Dog brewery in Portland.

If you are going to be near Bend, OR I would suggest you stop in at Bend Brewing Co. I haven't sampled their beers but considering Tonya just won Small Brewer of the Year at the World Beer Cup 2008 I am sure it will be well worth your time.

I'm originally from Seattle, my favorite is Mack and Jack--it's actually brewed in Redmond, WA. You should be able to find it on tap in Portland. You should also try Alaskan Amber--good stuff. Please give us reviews.

All of them! Portland is probably the best beer town in the US (though Denver is close). Definitely hit Bridgeport Brewing for a BridgePort IPA, the Rogue Ale House for a Kobe beef burger and just about anything to drink (St. Rogue Red, Juniper Pale Ale, Half-e-Weizen and/or Dead Guy Ale - also, if you're up for A LOT of hops, try the Tracktown IPA from Rogue's Eugene City Brewery line), Widmer Brothers for their famous Hefeweizen (though the Drop Top Amber and Broken Halo IPA are also delicious), the Lucky Lab for pizza and an OGA (Organic Golden Ale), and the Deschutes Brewery for a Mirror Pond. If you're in Government Camp (on Mt. Hood), make sure to stop at Mt. Hood Brewing for an Ice Axe IPA.

Perhaps my absolute favorite spots in Portland are the McMenamin's taverns and pubs. A local developer has taken over historic buildings in the area--an elementary school, a theater, and numerous others--and converted them to incredibly unique brew pubs and taverns. Hit the Kennedy School for a Hammerhead or Ruby (with Oregon raspberries). Here's the link: http://www.mcmenamins.com/

Enjoy! I'll be there myself next month for the International Beer Festival. If only I were going a week later for the Oregon Brewers' Fest!

It's not exactly local beer out there, but I would really keep an eye open for any of the Alaskan Brewing Company's brews. Their Amber and Summer Ale are great and probably available out there about now. And jump all over their smoked porter if you see it (and like such beers), it's excellent. Have fun out there!

All time favorite Oregon-only beers and breweries (ie no out of state distribution)

1. Terminal Gravity Brewing in Enterprise, OR - http://www.terminalgravitybrewing.com/

2. Calapooia Brewing in Albany, OR - http://calapooiabrewing.com

3. Bend Brewing (duh, Bend)

Heres a hint, rouge makes a good beer, but theyll gouge you at their tourist driven Newport, OR locations.

Rob,
If you go any where near Hood River OR, you have to stop into the Full Sail Brewery Tasting Room and Pub there. The Pale Ale and the Amber are some of the best I've ever had. The Pale Ale is quite tasty but not all hopped up like a Sierra Nevada. You can have a couple and not feel bloated.

Have a great trip!

You really can't go wrong.

Deschutes is a must for Bend.
Full Sail is a must for Hood River.
Bridgeport, Lucky Lab, Laurelhurst, Rogue Public House, or any of the McMenamins are fun places for beer in Portland. Also, don't forget the Horse Brass Pub.

Actually, you would be hard pressed to find any drinking establishment that wasn't a brewpub or have a selection of fantastic beers from which to choose. There are many bars where it's difficult or impossible to find a macrobrew because all the taps are reserved for craft brew.

Have a blast.

Rob,

As you know Chef Barry Rumsey who owned and operated that awesome restaurant in
Federal Hill--The Bicycle--has relocated to Mosier, OR just east of Hood River.
They have a new restaurant there and it is more of the same awesome, creative,
excellence that we were spoiled with here in Baltimore. Lots of local, fresh
things influencing the menu and lots of local brews right on the Hood River. In
fact they are listed on several local beer tasting/food events and they pride
themselves on their rotating local taps.

While you're there you should check it out. Here is their website:
