Making a list of chocolate beers for V-Day
Nothin' says lovin' like something from the beer fridge.
And so, as Valentine's Day approaches, I am making a list of chocolate beers that any beer lover would be happy to receive from a significant other.
Right off I think of Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout. I recently had a wonderfully rich bottle of Southern Tier Imperial Chokolate Stout. It uses bittersweet Belgian chocolate, costs about $8 and packs 11 percent alcohol by volume. But man is it smooth.
Armin D. Pfleiderer of the Wine Underground shop is a fan of this beer, going so far as to say he has "yet to find a woman who hasn't swooned over this."
Any other favorite chocolate beers?

Young's Double Chocolate, and Rogue's chocolate. The Brooklyn is delicious as well, but I believe that Young's takes the (chocolate) cake

Youngs Double Chocolate Stout, low in alchohol and delicious. Rogue Chocolate Stout and Sam Adams Chocolate Bock to name a few.

Duclaw has a pretty good seasonal called Naked Fish. It's a chocolate raspberry stout.

I like Ole Leghumper Porter. Chocolate's not in the name but it sure does have a wonderfully rich chocolate like taste that I've not been able to duplicate with my homebrew setup. I found it at Racers Pub on Harford and Taylor, bottled in 6's.

I am always a fan of Young's Double Chocolate Stout. It has that wonderful chocolaty flavor without being bitter.

I've been really into Baltic porters lately. They pack a bit of a whallop at 7-10%, but they're wonderfully complex with roasted chocolate dominating over several other, subtler candy flavors (anise among them). Synebrichoff Porter and Nogne-O are some good examples.

Rogue Chocolate Stout by Rogue Ale in Newport, Oregon. Also home of the Newport Wine and Seafood Festival which is right next to the brewery. Yummmm.

Even the Rogue Mocha Porter is great. There is no better chocolate beer than Southern Tier Choklat. And, if you can get it, Sam Adam's Chocolate Bock is a close second in my book. Love the blog, Rob!

Recently visited Brewery Ommegang outside of Cooperstown, N.Y. They produce "Chocolate Indulgence" among their lineup. While we were sampling the brews after the tour, the guide recommended taking a bite of chocolate (they provided some very tasty Belgian chocolate), starting to chew and then swallowing it together with a sip of the "Chocolate Indulgence". Not bad at all.

I vote for Young's (a popular choice judging by these postings). I had a slow pour Young's Chocolate last Summer while traveling and I can still taste it.

Rogue makes one of the original chocolate stouts. The base is an oatmeal stout infused with bittersweet chocolate. Try pairing it with Blue Cheese (Rogue Creamery makes), burgers, steak or wings, and its a natural with desserts like cheesecake, creme brulee, or poured over ice cream!
Rogue Chocolate Stout also blends beautifully with Hazelnut Brown Ale, or a Belgian Kriek, and for a kick mix iChoclate Stout with Rogue Chipotle Ale (chilis and dark chocolate...)
