Kraut beers

I went to the annual Kraut Fest at Gertrude's restaurant last week. Lots of homemade sauerkraut, lots of sausage, lots of fun and lots of good German beer.

My two favorites were Aventinus, a wheat doppelbock, full of malt and fruit, and Schneider Weiss, a smooth amber wheat beer. These two brews were picked by bartender Paul Joyce, who admits he loves big beers. These two had the muscle to stand up to the kraut.

Any other good kraut companions? What beer do you drink with your kraut?

Spaten Opitmater or their Oktoberfest beer (if you can find it in season) stand up well to good German food. Alas, outside of events like the one you went to at Gertrudes, there are precious few places to experience that now with Max Blob's gone from the scene seemingly permanently. Life seems so uncivilized without a BierGarten anywhere nearby.

Did you mean Aventinus instead of Adventinus? If so, it's also made by Schneider. It also happens to be my favorite beer and one I'd drink to kraut, especially a rotkraut accompanied by a Schweinshax'n.

Clipper City Loose Cannon is a fine beer that stands up well to kraut. The hops really hold their own against the spices

Yes, we need a good German Beer Garden in this town!!

Although it's in the Annapolis area, The Old Stein Inn in Edgewater has an excellent biergarden/bierstubbe and serves up both traditional and exotic German foods. They have 9 taps and a rotating 10th tap. Their selections are awesome and are served in the correct glass at the right temperature.
