Best beers in the state

Congrats to Red Brick Station, winner of this year’s Maryland Governor's Cup Brewing Competition, the annual award for top beer brewed in the state. The awards, sponsored by the Brewer’s Association of Maryland, were announced this weekend. In addition to best of show, Red Brick’s Something Red also won the competition’s Amber/Red Ale category. Other gold medal winners are Brewer’s Alley Pilsner, Brewer’s Alley Hefeweizen, DuClaw Mayhem Wheat, Brewer’s Alley Nut Brown Ale, Clipper City Loose Cannon IPA, DuClaw Blackjack Stout, Clipper City Oxford Raspberry Wheat, Oliver’s Iron Man Pale Ale, DuClaw Venom Pale Ale and DuClaw Devil’s Milk (in the strong beer/barley wine category). I would put that lineup up against any state in the nation.

All of those are great beers in their respective style categories and we're pretty blessed to have such a great group of brewers. While judging for the Cup this year, we noticed that many of the brewers are really upping the ante in quality. With the addition of Stone and now Lagunitas into the Maryland area, our hometown brewers will probably raise the bar again.

Sorry to see Clipper City's BaltoMarzHon not on that list. I had a friend visiting from Germany a few weeks ago and gave him one from my fridge. He was pretty skeptical given the label but took a good swig and pronounced "es ist gut!" - high praise for any beer but especially from a Bavarian! Additionally, I wanted to express my sadness at the apparent demise of DeGroen's beers. He also made an outstanding Marzen beer that I enjoyed having on tap - easily one of the best local brews around. Though I do enjoy a McHenry on tap when it can be found.

Any body have the complete list of awards?
