Corkboard: Where to find Chinese beer in Baltimore for Chinese new year

Today is Chinese New Year, the official start of the year of the Rabbit.

If you're celebrating here in Baltimore, you might not know right away where to go.

So I made some phone calls, and made an initial list of suggestions. Pitch in with others.

Tsingtao beer, which according to its owners is the number one Chinese beer in the United States, is sold at 12 different locations in Maryland.

In the city proper, it's available at P.F. Chang's, Ding How, and Wells Discount Liquors.

A list of the others locations is below.

If you don't like Chinese beer, or care about Chinese new year, but instead prefer Japanese beer, Sticky Rice in Fells Point tells me it carries three types of them: Kirin, Kirin Light, Sapporo on draft and cans, and Asahi.

A list of bars selling Tsingtao in Maryland, according its American importer:

Beltway Fine Wine and Spirits, 8727 Loch Raven Blvd., Towson
Ding How, 631 S. Broadway
East West Bistro, 8151 Ritchie Highway, Pasadena
Greenspring Inn, 10801 Falls Rd., Timonium
Hunan Manor, 7091 Deepage Drive, Columbia
Montgomery Plaza Liquors, 6225 Baltimore National Pike, Catonsville
P.F. Chang's, in Baltimore, Towson, Columbia, Annapolis locations
Triangle Liquors, 8801 Baltimore National Pike, Ellicott City
Wells Discount Liquors, 6310 York Road

Q: What are some other places where Chinese beer is available?

(If you want dinner options, at Dining@Large, Richard Gorelick has a list of restaurants doing rabbit-themed menus.)

pretty sure Zhongshan on Park Ave near the library serves it. Probably my favorite Chinese place in the city.

Another question for the corkboard: Which Baltimore bars/restaurants are offering Super Bowl specials this weekend?

It's not Chinese New Year, it's Lunar New Year, which other Asian countries celebrate.

I asked my Chinese friend about the "Lunar" new year and specifically this post and this was his reply:

"some ***** don't wanna to associated as chinese. but they used the chinese calendar, chinese new year is base on chinese calendar. in chinese...lunar = dragon calendar = chinese calendar"

So there you have it.

My wife is Vietnam, they call it Lunar New Year, it's only called Chinese New Year in China, go to other Asian countries and you won't hear it as Chinese New Year. Why ask a Chinese person about their new year, what do you think they are going to say?
